Chris Paul skipped chance to rest to be with young Spurs teammates
San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul competes during the skills challenge at the NBA basketball All-Star Saturday night festivities Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, in San Francisco.
SAN FRANCISCO – Chris Paul didn’t want to put his feet up.
Rather than get some much-needed rest during the All-Star break, the 39-year-old Spurs point guard chose to spend it in the Bay Area, hanging out with teammates Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
“Vic, yep. Vic and Steph,” Paul said when asked why he chose to skip a mini-vacation to spend it in the Bay Area.
Wembanyama, 21, was an All-Star for the first time. He also participated in the Skills Challenge on NBA Saturday Night with Paul before they were disqualified for a rules violation in the first round.
Castle, 20, won Rising Stars MVP after leading his team to a victory in the final of that event. The win gave the squad a berth in the All-Star mini-tournament Sunday night.
Paul, of course, is no stranger to All-Star Weekend. The 20-year veteran is a 12-time All-Star.
“For me, All-Stars is definitely an unbelievable weekend and I am definitely blessed to be here,” he said Saturday. “My son’s coming too. I don’t take these moments for granted. Getting to do this with Vic and then getting a chance to support Steph. They got long careers ahead of them, so just to be a part of their process is cool.”

Paul supports NBA HBCU Classic
As an enthusiastic supporter of historically black colleges and universities, Paul said it’s “very important” the league continue to spotlight those schools at All-Star Weekend.
Morehouse College defeated Tuskegee University 68-55 Saturday in the fourth annual NBA HBCU Classic in Oakland.
“I don’t think it’s just me,” Paul said. “I think it was a lot of the (NBA) players as a collective. It was something we talked about definitely in the bubble (in 2020 during the pandemic) and things like that, trying to make sure we amplify and give these guys a platform. And, obviously, I graduated from an HBCU, so it is dope to see it continue.”
Paul played college basketball at Wake Forest but graduated from Winston-Salem State University in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in communications.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Saturday at his annual session with the media at All-Star Weekend the league is “incredibly proud” of the HBCU Classic.
“We’ve been doing that for a number of years now," Silver said. "It’s different schools every year coming in just highlighting what’s happening at HBCUs. We love our relationship with the HBCUs and are pleased about how that’s going.”
Wembanyama nervous for Castle
Rooting on Castle in the Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday night was serious business for Wembanyama.
“I was nervous before he went up for the dunk contest,” Wembanyama said. “I found that I’m more nervous when it’s others on the court. I’m a bit nervous before me playing in a game, but when it is my family or my friends, it’s different.”
Castle finished as the runner-up in the event to Orlando Magic G Leaguer Mac McClung, who became the first player to win the event three years in a row.
