San Antonio vs. Miami, Final Score: Spurs stage valiant comeback but fall to Heat 103-105

NBA: Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs

With Victor Wembanyama being a late scratch, San Antonio unfortunately was unable to find sufficient production from the rest of the squad tonight in defeat

With each team’s lead stars not available tonight, Miami (Jimmy Butler - suspension) and San Antonio’s (Victor Wembanyama - illness) secondary stars and supporting casts figured prominently in an exciting and tension-filled battle that resulted in Bam Adebayo finishing off a furious fourth with a game-winning jumper. Unsung reserve Sandro Mamukelashvili (10 points) flashed his smarts and shooting touch in that final quarter that, along with Chris Paul’s heroics, nearly sprung San Antonio to triumph.

Keldon Johnson reprised his catalyst role from last night’s resounding win with 17 first-half points, but it was Rozier and Jovic that staked the Heat to a first-half lead. One night after putting up 144 points against Milwaukee, San Antonio’s shooting touch betrayed them at the start of the second and third periods. The Spurs head into an uncertain annual Rodeo Road trip with this gutting loss.

With Johnson leading the way (19 points and 5 rebounds), Devin Vassell (18 points), Harrison Barnes (12 points), and Paul (12 points) were bolstered by a yeoman effort from Charles Bassey (9 points and 15 rebounds). The only thing that really stopped Stephon Castle in the second half (10 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists) tonight was his sixth foul with scant time left.

Miami got its usual production from Bam Adebayo (30 points, 13 rebounds, 9 assists, and 3 blocks), but it was Rozier (19 points) and Jovic (14 points) that provided the boost for them to initially grab the lead in the second period. First-time All-Star Tyler Herro had an off-night from distance (0-for-8).

Observations

  • Bassey and Zach Collins split the time at center in the first quarter before Jeremy Sochan checked in. Bassey was able to match or surpass the energy that the indomitable Adebayo normally brings in his minutes.
  • Herro had a halfcourt buzzer beater overturned after the teams went to their locker rooms. Duncan Robinson also had a three pointer taken away in the fourth quarter as it came after the shotclock expired. Those six points would ultimately be…
  • Heat guard Haywood Highsmith really did seem to rattle the Spurs’ ballhandlers. It’ll be interesting to see if San Antonio can find a Highsmith-type equivalent (in addition to Castle) to shore up the perimeter defense next year.
  • Area 554: Castled wrestled down a rebound away from a lurking Adebayo midway through the second, took it into the teeth of the Heat defense, and dropped it off to a cutting Mamukelashvili for a lay-up. Mamukelashvili later bailed out a tentative Spurs’ possession by cutting baseline and got himself a crucial and-1.
  • Keldon’s Kitchen: The persistently glum look on his face the last two games has been concerning.
  • Sequence of the Game #1: Early in a pensive fourth quarter, Julian Champagnie doggedly dove to the floor to claim his well-earned deflection on Duncan Robinson, fed Johnson in transition for free throw opportunities.
  • Sequence of the Game #2: After Mamukelashvili again rescued a bad offensive possession with a floater, Castle took an errant inbounds pass and threw down a dunk contest-worthy slam. Mamukelashvili then hit a crowd-pleasing three to put San Antonio up three.
  • Jeremy Sochan passed on a handful of shot opportunities (not saying they were going to go in!), so it was nice to see him get a 12-footer down late in the third quarter.

Game Rundown

Herro had two quick baskets and a steal from the opening tip. Bassey occupied the Miami bigs on the offensive boards and teamed with Castle for a lob. Vassell seemed to be everywhere with his playmaking and pesky defense. Adebayo had a pair of tough and-1’s to keep the Heat close. A 5-point burst by Nikola Jovic briefly put Miami ahead. After Collins’ second foul, Terry Rozier ran his mouth at him over the next several moments while missing both free throws, and then on his next drive, Rozier was turned away by Collins. Johnson continued his recent great play off-the-bench, while Jaime Jacquez excelled in his reserve time, as well. The well-played stanza that saw 11 lead changes and 8 ties ended with… the teams knotted at 33.

San Antonio couldn’t find their way on offense over the first 2+ minutes of the second period. Rozier’s pair of threes and Jovic’s layup punctuated their 11-0 run spanning quarters. A Champagnie three in transition shaved the deficit to two, but Rozier’s third three of the frame added to the Heat cushion. Johnson and Bassey did well to follow-up a deflating amount of San Antonio’s perimeter misses. Chris Paul’s three put the Spurs in front for a moment, but Miami ended the half on a 8-3 push to go up four.

The Spurs could not find any scoring over the first 2+ minutes of the third until a Castle wing three ended their drought. Thankfully, Highsmith kept San Antonio in range with his own handful of misses (0-for-5). A trio of Adebayo jumpers helped Miami matched their biggest lead (8) of the night. Vassell attacked the basket to conjure up offense, but threes from Rozier and Jovic put the Spurs down 11. Threes from Champagnie and Vassell drew San Antonio closer. Johnson wrangled an offensive rebound admist several Heat and his putback drew the Spurs within one. Rozier’s lay-in made it 85-82 after three.
