Castle set for busy All-Star Weekend
San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) shoots over Indiana Pacers guard Ben Sheppard (26) and forward Pascal Siakam (43) during the second half of a Paris Games 2025 NBA basketball game in Paris, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025.
The Spurs love rookie Stephon Castle’s defensive skills.
“He has the physical traits and skill set defensively to be a very effective defender," acting head coach Mitch Johnson said. "He’s already shown flashes of that at a young age. With him, it’s just continued attention to detail and reps and learning on the job. He has the mindset to do that.”
But next month during All-Star Weekend, another aspect of Castle’s game will be showcased: His hops.
Citing sources, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Castle will compete against Orlando’s Mac McClung, Chicago rookie Matas Buzelis and Milwaukee’s Andre Jackson Jr. in the Slam Dunk Contest.
McClung is the two-time defending champion of the event.
The contest will be part of a busy All-Star Weekend for Castle, who helped Connecticut win the national championship as a freshman last season. He’s considered a lock for the Rising Stars Game.
The rosters for that contest are set to be announced Tuesday night via TNT.
Meanwhile, Castle will join his teammates on Tuesday morning for their first practice since returning to San Antonio after their trip to Paris last week in which they split a pair of games with Indiana.
The Spurs (20-23) begin a three-game homestand against the Los Angeles Clippers (26-20) Wednesday night.
