The participants for the 2025 Castrol Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star weekend have been announced, and they of course include Spurs rookie Stephon Castle and sophomore Victor Wembanyama. Castle has had a solid rookie season and is in the running for Rookie of the Year, averaging 11.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Wemby, who figures to also be an All Star reserve, is considered the landslide favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year while averaging 24.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.9 blocks.

The 10 rookies and 11 sophomores will be drafted into three teams of seven, while the seven G-League players (which interestingly includes 3rd overall pick Reed Sheppard, who hasn’t seen much playing time with the Rockets) will make up the fourth team. The teams will play in a mini-tournament format. Team A will face Team B in the first semifinal, and Team C will play Team D in the second semifinal. The first teams to 40 points wins, and the two winners will then face each other in the finale, where the first to 25 points is the champion.
The winner of the Rising Stars will then go on to play in the All-Star game, which beginning this year will follow the same mini-tournament format, with the other three teams comprising of the NBA All Stars. This of course presents an interesting proposition for Wemby: assuming he makes the All Star game as a reserve, what happens if his team advances from the Rising Stars Challenge? (My assumption is he would join his All Star team, and someone from another Rising Stars team would be selected to take his place, but we’ll have to wait and find out if that situation even presents itself.)
The Rising Stars Challenge will take place on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Chase Center in San Francisco at 8 PM CT, and the All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 7 PM CT. Castle will also participate in the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15, 7 PM CT. All events will be aired on TNT. The Spurs — specifically, Area 51 — will be well represented at All Star Weekend (which is not something Spurs fans are used to), so be sure to tune in and cheer them on!
