Spurs’ Buford: Popovich return not out of the question
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich talks with game officials as the Spurs play Miami during their pre-season game at the Frost Center on Oct. 13, 2023. Spurs defeated Miami, 120-104.
PARIS — Three days into their adventure in France, the Spurs have been missing one key piece of their traveling party.
Coach Gregg Popovich would have loved this internationally flavored trip, except he is back in San Antonio still recovering from a stroke suffered in November.
Spurs Chief Executive Officer R.C. Buford indicated the team still harbors hope Popovich will return at some point.
“He’s doing his rehab and improving,” Buford said. "We don’t know when that will be, but we expect him to be back.”
Spurs point guard Chris Paul said he still talks to Popovich on a regular basis.
“He calls after game,” Paul said. “I talk to him. He tells me what he sees. I appreciate that more than anything. Because he doesn’t have to do that, and he does.”
Acting coach Mitch Johnson, who has led the Spurs to a 17-19 record in Popovich’s absence, said he, too, remains hopeful his boss will return at some point but could offer no hint of a timetable.
“Pop’s health has been the priority since the start of this and will be until … dot, dot, dot,” Johnson said. "That’s kind of how we take the approach. We want the best for Pop and the best for this team. However I can help is where I’ll put my energy.”
