For San Antonio Spurs’ road woes, the devil is in details

Jeremy Sochan’s cockeyed 3-point shot hit nothing but backboard, the final horn sounded and the Target Center erupted Sunday with a roar that seemed left over from the Minnesota Vikings game down the street.

A 112-110 loss to the Timberwolves sent the Spurs to 1-3 on a four-game road swing that was a handful of plays in the other direction from being an unmitigated success.

The lessons are coming fast and furious for the Spurs as they close the calendar year. Ever the dutiful teacher, veteran point guard Chris Paul was not sure about pointing out the latest one.

“We’re learning how hard it is to win, especially on the road,” Paul said. “Everything matters on the road.”

The Spurs were not close enough to perfect to finish with more than one victory on what was to date their longest road trip of the season.

That came Friday in Brooklyn, by a 96-87 decision that was not without its own share of warts.

The Spurs’ three losses on the trip were by a combined 10 points, narrow enough for them to feel some sense of optimism heading into Tuesday’s New Year’s Eve contest against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Frost Bank Center.

Spurs vs. Clippers: How to watch the game, notable stats, player news

The Spurs had not been road tested much heading into the trip, having played a league-low 10 away games before leaving for Philadelphia last week.

“I think we felt what road NBA basketball looks like against good teams,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “There are some takeaways we feel really good about, and some takeaways that will give us much to do when we get home.”

The main takeaway for the Spurs as they comeback from the road: In a hostile environment, every detail is important.

In a 111-106 defeat against the 76ers that began the trip, a handful of turnovers in the final minute ruined the Spurs’ bid at a comeback.

In a 117-114 loss at New York on Christmas Day, an inability to secure a final defensive rebound squandered the Spurs’ chance at a potential game-tying possession.

Down two points in the waning seconds at Minnesota, the Spurs at least got a shot off. The best look they could muster was a 3-point try from a 26.5% 3-point shooter in Sochan.

The result was mathematically predictable: Sochan’s shot was wide, and the Timberwolves held on to win.

“Anyone can look at the last play, but it’s all the other plays we didn’t do well that really matter,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “Our second quarter could have been better. That put us in (the situation we were in) that last possession.”

Indeed, a game after scoring a season-low 11 points in the first quarter at Brooklyn, the Spurs managed 12 in the second quarter against the Timberwolves.

Give Minnesota a bit of credit for that. The Wolves, a season removed from a Western Conference finals appearance, can be one of the NBA’s more ferocious defensive teams when properly engaged.

They were for swaths of Sunday’s game.

“They’re elite,” Johnson said. “I felt them in the second quarter the most with the 12 points. They’re big, they’re athletic, they’re good individual defenders and they are connected as a team.”

Give the Spurs credit here, too. They bounced back to get the game to crunch time, where since the arrival of long-in-tooth veterans Paul and Barnes, they have been one of the best in the league at closing games.

The Spurs entered Sunday 8-5 in crunch time games. The caveat there, of course, is that most of their fourth-quarter success stories had been authored at home.

“On the road, it’s different,” Paul said. “The crowd is against you, the momentum, the shots you take. It’s all important.”

The Spurs led by eight early in the fourth quarter Sunday, but could not hold on.

Minnesota took its final lead as the Spurs’ rebounding woes cropped up again with 3:39 to play. Rudy Gobert followed a Julius Randle miss with a dunk to put the Wolves ahead 105-103, and they played suffocating enough defense to keep the Spurs at bay.

Minnesota’s Donte DiVincenzo – who led his team with 26 points – offered the Spurs a chance to win or tie when he missed the first of two foul shots with 12.8 to play.

The Timberwolves snuffed out the Spurs’ ensuing inbounds play, leaving the ball in the hands of Sochan from 23 feet as time expired.

It was not exactly the look Johnson drew up in the huddle.

“I think our late-game execution is an area of improvement for us,” Barnes said. “We put ourselves in position, battled for 44, 46 minutes to give ourselves a chance to win. Finishing out games is something we can get better at.”

In the end, the Spurs wasted 34 points from Victor Wembanyama, a season-high 14 assists from Paul, 24 points from Barnes and 22 points from Devin Vassell to tumble back to .500 at 16-16 overall. They are 5-9 on the road.

The Spurs won’t have to wait long to test the lessons they learned on the final road trip of December.

Following Tuesday’s contest against the Clippers, the Spurs open January by playing five of their first six games of 2025.

This much is certain: The difference between winning and losing will be discovered in the details.

“Some of the little things we talk about – turnovers, offensive rebounds, getting to our spots quickly and giving ourselves time in a possession,” Barnes said. “Little things we can key on can make a big difference.”
