3 takeaways as Victor Wembanyama’s 10 blocks power Spurs win
SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 21: Donovan Clinton #23 of the Portland Trail Blazers fouls Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs after Wembanyama’s dunk in the first half at Frost Bank Center on December 21, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.
With 8:31 remaining Saturday, Victor Wembanyama headed to the bench already having collected 30 points, seven rebounds and a career-high tying 10 blocked shots.
All he needed was three more rebounds to log his fourth career triple-double.
With the Spurs beating Portland by 20 at that point, Wembanyama knew the only way he was getting back into the game to chase it was if the Trail Blazers made some sort of run in the fourth quarter.
Nobody in the Frost Bank Center was happier than Wembanyama that the rest of the Spurs kept him sidelined, taking care of an easy-does-it 114-94 victory.
“It’s always nice to have one like this,” Wembanyama said. “We allowed ourselves to have that.”
Behind another monster Wembanyama night, a 16-point, 12-rebound night off the bench from Charles Bassey and a muscular defensive effort, the Spurs cruised to a rare non-nailbiter of a win.
It was their sixth double-digit victory out of 15 this season, and their first in December.
Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson credited the Spurs’ team defense with making things tough on Portland.

I think it was one of our better defensive efforts for sure,” Johnson said. “I thought we had a couple offensive plays early, could have been a little bit more fundamental and solid, missed a couple shots, but it was a very consistent effort for the most part.”
The Spurs limited the Trail Blazers to 39.4% shooting, and kept them to no more than 25 points in any quarter.
Unlike eight days earlier in Portland, when Anfernee Simons and Jerami Grant alternately got loose in a narrow 118-116 Spurs victory, this time they were non-factors.
Simons and Grant combined for 25 points on 9-of-34 shooting Saturday.
Shaeden Sharpe led Portland with 25 points himself, though it wasn’t enough for Portland to avoid falling to 0-3 against the Spurs this season.
Having won five out of seven games this month, the Spurs have reason to be optimistic as they head out on a Christmas week road trip that will take them to Philadelphia, New York and Brooklyn.
“The chemistry is coming together,” Bassey said.
Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s victory, which moved the Spurs to 15-13:
1. Wemby is changing the game with his 3-ball
Throughout his matriculation to the NBA, Wembanyama has heard whispers — some of them emanating from press rooms across the league — wondering some version of the following: How come a player so tall is shooting so many 3-pointers?
More and more, Wembanyama has offered answers like he did Saturday.
Wembanyama made 4 of 8 from beyond the arc, a game after sinking 7 of 12 against Atlanta.
Saturday’s performance put him at 200 for his career. In his 93rd game, Wembanyama got there faster than the likes of Stephen Curry, James Harden and Ray Allen.
Those names are notable. They went on the become the top three 3-point shooters in league history.
“Every player knows there’s some days you can’t make shots, whether it’s practice or a game,” Wembanyama said. “Some days it just doesn’t feel right. Those days happen less and less over the years.”
Growing up as a 7-footer, Wembanyama heard some version of the “why does he shoot so many 3-pointers question” often.
With each prolific 3-point game he produces, he seems to be putting that query to rest.
“I’m experiencing levels of freedom I’ve never really had the chance before to have,” Wembanyama said. “For me, it’s also the clearest path to how to get better and how to get to the top level.”
2. Is Scoot Henderson just a dude?
Two summers ago, Wembanyama was clearly the cream of a top-heavy draft class. Portland’s Scoot Henderson, meanwhile, was often mentioned in the same breath.
If one caught the right NBA scout on the right day in the spring of 2023 — possibly after one too many cocktails — he might argue Henderson had an outside shot of going No. 1 overall.
In the end, the Spurs did the smart thing and took Wembanyama. Henderson fell to the Blazers at No. 3 as Charlotte opted to select Brandon Miller second.
This much has become clear: Had the Spurs wound up with Henderson out of that draft, they would still be wandering in the rebuilding wilderness.
Henderson has morphed into a bench player for Portland. He was just OK on Saturday, recording 12 points and one assist.
It is fair to say, however, the 20-year-old former G League Ignite standout has yet to live up to the hype.
Portland Trail Blazers Scoot Henderson (00) gets fouled by San Antonio Spurs guard Blake Wesley (14) during the second half of an NBA basketball game in San Antonio, Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024. (AP Photo/Kin Man Hui)
The Trail Blazers still believe in Henderson, because they have to.
“He’s just young,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups said. “When you’re a young player like Scoot, you’re playing against players that are better than you for the first time in your life. So you’ve got to kind of figure that part out.”
Henderson came into the night averaging 13 points and 5.2 assists in his career, but also 3.3 turnovers while shooting 38 percent.
Though he is unlikely to hit Wembanyama’s stratosphere, there is still time for Henderson to grow into a productive player.
The Trail Blazers have their fingers crossed that it happens.
“There’s certain nights that he looks amazing,” Billups said. “And there’s certain nights that he really struggles and he looks his actual age. He has to show a level of patience with it, as we all do.”
3. Collins remains odd big man out
Saturday marked the second game Zach Collins has been off the injured list with his injured back. It was also the second straight game in which Collins was a healthy scratch.
By now, it is clear this is coaching decision.
“Zach’s been doing a really good job (in practice) and he’s available,” Johnson said. “He’s just working.”
Johnson once again went with Bassey as the backup to Wembanyama, and was mostly rewarded. Bassey posted another energetic double-double, despite some raw moments in the first half.
That position is going to be in flux for a while. For now, it appears Bassey has the upper hand.
“I think he’s had a chance and he’s taken it,” Wembanyama said.
