Paul enjoys emotional celebration with Spurs after milestone assist
SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 8: Chris Paul #3 of the San Antonio Spurs acknowledges the crowd after his assist surpassed Jason Kidd during the game against the New Orleans Pelicans in the first half at Frost Bank Center on December 8, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.
Chris Paul enjoyed a memorable postgame celebration with the Spurs after he passed Jason Kidd into second place in NBA career assists, and they defeated New Orleans 121-116 Sunday.
Paul gained his milestone assist when he fed Victor Wembanyama with an inbounds pass the 7-foot-3 center sank for a 25-foot 3-point shot with 7:06 left in the first half.
The play gave Paul 12,092 assists, one more than Kidd. John Stockton is No. 1 on the list with 15,806.
Paul, 39, finished the game with six points and 10 assists, giving him 12,099 during his 20-year NBA career that began with the New Orleans franchise after it drafted him fourth overall in 2005.
Several loud rounds of cheers could be heard coming from the Spurs locker room at the Frost Bank Center after the game.
“Man, it was cool,” Paul said of the celebration. “It’s a lot better since we won, you know what I mean? Given the fashion that we won. But yeah, man, it was really cool. The guys, they gave me a memorable gift, not only a win, but a ball and a big picture with all the teams that I done played with, but more so all the (173) guys that I’ve assisted in my career, and I definitely wasn’t expecting that.”
The Paul-to-Wembanyama combination also resulted in the Spurs taking a 117-116 lead with 36.9 seconds left. On that play, Paul got the ball to a trailing Wembanyama for another 3-pointer.
The Spurs never trailed after Wembanyama’s basket as they snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 12-12. Wembanyama finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in his first game back after missing two in a row with a back injury.
“I think it has been really cool to be a part of his journey,” Paul said of the 20-year-old French star. “I’ve had an opportunity to be a part of a lot of great players’ journey in my career, and to be here with Vic and to be connected to him in that way has been pretty cool.”
Wembanyama was thrilled to be the player who scored the basket to give Paul the assist that vaulted him over Kidd into second place.
“It was the best,” Wembanyama said of being involved in the history-making play. "I didn’t realize it in the moment, but coming into the game, I was thinking, ‘OK, I got to get that. I got to be in on this one.’
“Yeah, but it was great. I’m very proud of him.”
Even though Paul is in his first year with the Spurs, his historic accomplishment was a feel-good moment for a franchise he once tormented both in the regular season and the playoffs.
“We are witnessing greatness,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “A lot of us have competed against him. We have all watched him. And to be able to experience it first-hand, it’s a privilege. And he is still doing it at a high, high level. We are grateful for that and he deserves all the praise and the attention that comes with that because it is a hell of an honor.”
Paul’s family, including his father, was on hand in the crowd of 16,840 to witness his historic moment.
“A big shout out to my dad,” Paul said. “I didn’t think my dad liked me when I was younger. But he saw something in me and he knew that if I wanted it, I had to work at it. And so my dad texted me this morning. He texted me yesterday. My dad is still my dad. I’m kicking 40 in the ass and my daddy is still my daddy. I still look to him for comfort. I look to him for any and everything. I still look up to him. He’s still my hero and I’m glad that he’s here and I get to share that with him and all of them.”
