The whistle did not blow when one coach thought it should have in the third quarter Thursday, and suddenly the coach was on the floor.

The whistle blew then. Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson was called for his first career technical foul.

Watching all this unfold during a clunker of a 139-124 loss to Chicago, Keldon Johnson couldn’t help but smile and think of Gregg Popovich.

“I was having flashbacks,” Keldon Johnson said.

The flashbacks could have been to last season, when the Spurs produced some of the same kind of stinkers they rolled out at the Frost Bank Center.

“I felt like we laid an egg,” Keldon Johnson said.

The Spurs got off to another slow start, never led and trailed by as many as 21 points before falling to the 10-13 Bulls.

Taking advantage of the Victor Wembanyama’s absence, Chicago center Nikola Vucevic brutalized the Spurs inside and out on his way to 39 points. Not to be outdone, Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu registered his first career triple-double with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Spurs got 28 points off the bench from Keldon Johnson, a season high. Jeremy Sochan started at center in Wembanyama’s stead and turned in his second consecutive double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

The Bulls started hot from 3-point range, making 9 of 16 in the first half. They finished 17-of-37 overall, good for a sizzling 45.9%.

What went wrong with the Spurs’ perimeter defense?

“A little bit of everything,” Mitch Johnson said. “Transition was bad. Had some situations even off makes where we didn’t get back. They got buckets right after makes weren’t connected, didn’t show shifts where we were supposed to. The amount of right-handed layups, kind of straight-line drives was pretty alarming. Lack of communication. On some screens it was, pick your poison.”

Otherwise, not a bad night for the Spurs’ defense.

In the end, the Spurs spent too much time digging out of holes. They closed to seven points early in the fourth quarter, only to see Chicago’s lead bloom to 21 in the next 3 ½ minutes.

The Spurs got that lead down to eight with 3:13 to go, but could crawl no closer.

Here are three takeaways from the defeat, which dropped the Spurs to 11-11 with another game against Sacramento looming Friday at home:

1. Johnson’s technical a sign of frustration

The Spurs’ acting coach was about as emotional as he has been since taking over for Popovich on Nov. 2.

He was not happy with the Spurs’ play to start the game, as they gave up 73 points and 60% shooting in the first half. That boiled over in the second half when he felt like the Spurs weren’t getting some of the whistles they deserved.

At least one Spur wished the rest of the team had been as angry as their coach.

“He shouldn’t be the only one getting upset,” said Devin Vassell, who supplied 17 points off the bench. “We shouldn’t be comfortable with letting teams come in here and just do whatever they want to do.”

The slow starts are beginning to become a concern.

In the past nine games, the Spurs have faced a deficit of 17 points or more seven times – including the past four games in a row. The Spurs have won some of those (against Oklahoma City, Golden State, Sacramento and Utah) and lost the others (against Phoenix, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas).

“We always feel like we have a chance to come back and compete and win a game, but we don’t need to keep putting ourselves in that position,” Vassell said. “It’s tough. It’s tiring. We just can’t keep doing that.”

2. The Spurs missed the Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month

Duh.

Wembanyama missed Thursday’s game after coming out of Tuesday’s loss in Phoenix with back soreness. The Spurs believe he could be back before the end of the weekend — either Friday against Sacramento or (more likely) against New Orleans on Sunday.

They definitely missed him against Chicago.

Vucevic feasted against a smaller Spurs front line on his way to a season high in points. Chicago, meanwhile, rang up more points than any other team has against the Spurs this season.

With Wembanyama in the lineup, the Spurs have been a top-10 defense. They weren’t anywhere close to that Thursday.

Without Wembanyama around to create havoc, the Bulls basically went anywhere and did anything they wanted.

3. More experimenting with Sochan

With Wembanyama out, the Spurs went with last season’s opening-night point guard at center.

The 6-foot-8 Sochan was game enough.

“I’m going to be ready for anything,” Sochan said.

Jeremy with the moves :fire: pic.twitter.com/T0PSVUA9Qc

— San Antonio Spurs (@ spurs) December 6, 2024

When Wembanyama missed three games in mid-November, the Spurs went with a more conventional big man, Zach Collins, in his place.

Collins played some of his best basketball of the season during that stretch.

Why go with Sochan on Thursday?

The answer to that question, per Mitch Johnson: Why not?

“We wanted to see what it looked like to be honest,” the coach said.

It went kind of, sort of OK.

It was Sochan’s second game back after missing 13 with a fractured thumb, and he produced his second consecutive double-double.

With the Spurs downsized the front court, the honor of defending the 6-10 Vucevic went mostly to the 6-8 Harrison Barnes.

It left Sochan free to roam around and do Jeremy Sochan things, which mostly seemed to work out for him.
