SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 5: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs celebrates after a three against the Chicago Bulls in the second half at Frost Bank Center on December 5, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.

Victor Wembanyama’s latest absence due to injury could be a short one.

“It’s the hope,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said when asked if the team’s franchise player would return before the weekend is out.

Hobbled by a sore lower back, Wembanyama sat out Thursday’s 139-124 loss to Chicago, which kicked off a three-game homestand.

The Spurs listed Wembanyama as doubtful for Friday night’s game against Sacramento. His next chance to return would be on Sunday when the Spurs host New Orleans.

“I’d say it’s the definition of day to day,” Johnson said.

Devin Vassell sat out Friday’s game for injury management because the medical staff hasn’t cleared him to play in the second game of back to backs after his offseason foot surgery.

Wembanyama was injured during Tuesday night’s 103-94 loss at Phoenix. He was in visible pain after a collision with Bradley Beal with 2:23 left that resulted in a charging foul but remained in the game.

“I don’t think he was hurt on a certain play,” Johnson said. “But I’m sure that play didn’t help.”

Wembanyama missed three games last month with a knee injury. The Spurs are 2-2 without their leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker.

In returning to the starting lineup for the first time since he injured his thumb on Nov. 4, Jeremy Sochan showed off his versatility by lining up at center.

“It’s unfortunate not having a big guy there, but I’m going to be ready for anything,” said Sochan, who usually plays forward but also had a stint last season as the starting point guard last season.

Sochan’s assignment surprised observers because Zach Collins started and played well the last time Wembanyama was out.

“We wanted to see what it looked like to be honest,” Johnson said of Sochan’s new assignment.

It was Sochan’s second game since returning from thumb surgery. He responded with 16 points and and a career-high 14 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

The Spurs were also without backup point guard Tre Jones, who missed his second game after he suffered a left shoulder sprain in the win at Sacramento Dec. 1.

“I think it’s going to be a few weeks,” Johnson said of the timetable for Jones’ return.

The Spurs have been plagued by injuries throughout the season, but Johnson said the team has handled the adversity well.

“It’s frustrating but part of the deal,” Johnson said. “We’re not the only team dealing with it. No one definitely cares but from a continuity standpoint, it’s frustrating.”

‘Pretty poor’ night defensively

Without Wembanyama, the Spurs suffered through their worst defensive performance of the season.

The Bulls’ scoring output was the most prolific by a Spurs’ opponent this season. They also hit 57.8% of their shots from the field, another season high for a Spurs’ foe, and 45.9% of their shots from 3-point range while scoring more than 30 points in each quarter.

“Transition was bad,” Johnson said. “Had some situations even off makes where we didn’t get back. They got buckets right after makes, we weren’t connected, we didn’t show shifts where we were supposed to. The amount of right-handed layups, kind of straight-line drives, was pretty alarming.”

Johnson also cited the Spurs’ lack of communication as a problem. It was a disappointing outing for a team that entered the game ranked ninth in the league in points yielded per game (110.4).

“Pick your poison, it was pretty poor tonight,” Johnson said of the Spurs’ defensive effort.

Nikola Vucevic had a season-high 39 points for Chicago (10-13). Ayo Dosunmu added 27 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the first triple-double of his four-year career.

Keldon Johnson had a season-high 28 points and Devin Vassell added 17 for the Spurs, who lost for the third time in their last four games to fall to 11-11.

Chicago never trailed in recording its season high for points. The Bulls matched their season-high with 73 points in the first half in taking a 16-point lead. A 21-point cushion midway through the fourth quarter marked their biggest lead.

“They were just driving against us,” Vassell said. “Vucevic was doing whatever he wanted to. We didn’t play how we normally play, and that’s the disappointing part of it.”

Champagnie recalls coach great’s impact

As an alumnus of St. John’s, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie is mourning the death of Red Storm coaching great Lou Carnesecca.

"He lived up the block from St. John’s and me and my trainer used to go up there and just say, ‘What’s up?’ " Champagnie said. “He also used to come by the school once in a while. It’s definitely a big loss for the whole basketball community, and especially St. John’s.”

Carnesecca, who guided St. John’s to the Final Four in 1995, died Nov. 30. He was 99.

Carnesecca coached at the school in the New York City borough of Queens for 24 season over two stints, making a postseason tournament each year.

“Just the times that I got to speak to him and just kind of get information from him and just share the same room as him, that was big for me,” said Champagnie, who had a 16.0 scoring average during his three years at St. John’s from 2019-22.

Wearing his trademark colorful sweaters, Carnesecca led St. John’s to 18 seasons of at least 20 wins and 18 NCAA Tournament appearances. He finished with a 526-200 record and had 30-win seasons in 1985 and 1986.
