PHOENIX — The Spurs did not get what they wanted most at the Footprint Center on Tuesday, a victory that would have sent them into the quarterfinals of the Emirates NBA Cup.

They did, however, gain an experience that might — eventually — help them with bigger goals down the road.

Devin Booker scored 29 points to lift Phoenix to a 104-93 victory that bounced the Spurs from the NBA’s In-Season Tournament one win shy of the knockout rounds.

“The defensive effort was really good,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “We turned the ball over. We missed a lot of shots. Those two things put pressure on your defense, and I thought it held up well.”

The Spurs came into the night controlling their own destiny: Win and they were in.

It was a playoff-like situation many members of the Spurs’ young roster had never before experienced.

Even in defeat, the Spurs are hopeful the experience will pay off down the road as they compete for actual playoff berths.

Thanks to the Spurs’ loss, Oklahoma City won West Group B and will advance to the quarterfinals.

The Spurs finished 2-2 in group play, an improvement from last season when they went 0-4.

Spurs guard Chris Paul — who was part of the National Basketball Players Association group that helped shape the inaugural In-Season tournament last season — said he was proud of the experience.

“I think everybody does (get excited for tournament games),” Paul said. “I’d like to pat myself on the back, and all the guys who came up with this thing. Players have really bought into it, and it’s exciting to see.”

Devin Vassell scored 25 points off the bench to lead the Spurs, while Victor Wembanyama fought through a rough night to finish with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Suns won despite losing star forward Kevin Durant to an ankle sprain in the first half.

The Spurs were within 75-71 heading into the fourth, very much in contention for a berth in the final eight.

Instead, the Spurs managed zero field goals over the first 5:23 of the final frame, falling into an 18-point hole at one point.

Though they would battle back over the final six minutes, it was too big of a hole to overcome.

Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s loss, which dropped the Spurs to 11-10:

1. Sometimes, it really is just the missed shots

Almost every category of the box score shows the Spurs and Suns played a fairly even game.

The Spurs outscored the Suns in the paint 46-40. The Suns outscored the Spurs in transition 21-19. Both teams gave up 14 turnovers, with the Suns turning theirs into 21 points and the Spurs netting 19.

The biggest disparity: One team made shots, and the other did not.

“Defense was pretty good tonight,” Paul said. “Our offense was not.”

The Spurs shot 35% from the floor, making 35 of their 100 attempts. Phoenix was 38 of 78.

The 3-point line, meanwhile, was a disaster.

A game after setting a club record by making 23 3-pointers in Sacramento — and shooting 50% on them — the Spurs could find sand in the desert Tuesday.

The Spurs made 8 of their 44 attempts against Phoenix. The Suns didn’t exactly shoot the lights out of the place, but seemed sizzling by comparison (11 of 32).

The Spurs headed back to San Antonio knowing they played well enough defensively to win. They just couldn’t score.

“Phoenix only had 104 points,” forward Jeremy Sochan said. “That’s a really good thing. We just couldn’t make shots.”

2. What changed for Wemby in the third quarter?

Two nights after posting a 34-point triple-double in Sacramento, Wembanyama was scoreless through the first two quarters Tuesday.

He spent the first half launching 3-pointers, going 0 of 6 from beyond the arc and 0 of 8 overall before halftime.

Then came the third quarter.

Wembanyama scored 12 points in the opening 4:06 of the second half to help the Spurs climb back in the game. Ten of those points were in the paint, including a reverse alley-oop dunk off a pass from Paul that included a foul on Booker.

— San Antonio Spurs (@ spurs) December 4, 2024

What changed?

“I think he was very intentional about establishing himself in the paint,” Johnson said. “That got him going.”

At least on this night, it wasn’t something Wembanyama could sustain. He finished with one more basket, a late-game 3-pointer that put him at 1 of 9 from the arc.

3. Sochan moved well in his return

The Spurs believed Sochan’s conditioning likely wouldn’t be an issue in his first game in a month, and they were largely correct.

Nursing a fractured left thumb suffered Nov. 4 against the L.A. Clippers, Sochan was able to keep up a running and conditioning program during his time on the shelf.

The 21-year-old forward came off the bench Tuesday, and provided the Spurs a spark. He had 14 points, going 5 of 10 from the field, and added 12 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season.

“Looking forward to kind of hoping he picks up where he left off,” Johnson said before the game. “It’s high expectations. Obviously he was playing very good basketball.”

Most importantly, Sochan came out of Tuesday’s game feeling good about things.

“Like always, that first game back things feel a little faster,” Sochan said. “I kept in shape, so I thought it was OK.”
