SALT LAKE CITY — The news Harrison Barnes never expected to receive came at 30,000 feet somewhere roughly over the state of New Mexico.

That’s when teammate Keldon Johnson commandeered the microphone on the Spurs’ charter flight to Utah on Monday to announce Barnes had been named the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Week.

As the newly minted man of the hour, Barnes’ first reaction was to wonder why the naturally boisterous Johnson needed a microphone at all.

“He’s loud enough as it is,” Barnes said.

Barnes’ second reaction to his first Western Conference Player of the Week award says a lot about why the rest of the Spurs were so happy for his accomplishment.

“I think it’s just a testament to how we’re playing as a team,” Barnes said. “We’re continuing to stack wins and stack positive days. It’s an individual award, but it really belongs to the organization.”

Barnes became the Spurs’ first Player of the Week winner since DeMar DeRozan in 2020, stitching together a three-game stretch in which he averaged 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds. He hit 61.8% from the field in that span, including 9 of 15 from 3-point range, and did not commit a turnover.

More importantly, the Spurs went 3-0 with big-time victories over Oklahoma City and Golden State, sandwiched around a win over Utah that included a comeback from 20 points down.

The 32-year-old Barnes is not your typical Player of the Week.

No player in league history has won his first such award as late as his 13th season. Mike Conley and Jrue Holiday both achieved that feat in their 12th seasons.

“Yeah, I’m old,” Barnes said with a laugh. “That’s what that says.”

The Spurs would prefer to think of Barnes as seasoned and experienced, which is one of the reasons they brought him over from Sacramento in July.

In that, give part of Barnes’ Player of the Week award to Spurs general manager Brian Wright.

When the Kings were looking to shed salary to make a deal with Chicago for DeRozan, Wright and the Spurs stepped in to take Barnes’ contract off Sacramento’s books, garnering a 2031 pick swap for their troubles.

Heading to Tuesday’s rematch with Utah at the Delta Center, Barnes is averaging 11.5 points and 4.7 rebounds as the Spurs’ starting power forward. His field-goal percentage of 52% ranks tops among the Spurs’ starting group.

“He’s just a kind of silent killer,” point guard Tre Jones said. "He does a little bit of everything. It doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet, (although) obviously lately it has been.”

Having been around the NBA block a few times, Barnes also knows when to speak up.

His arrival, along with that of 39-year-old point guard Chris Paul, has afforded the Spurs a pair of veteran voices in the locker room the likes of which they haven’t had in a while.

Johnson has been one of Barnes’ most eager disciples, sitting beside his elder teammate on team flights and in the locker room.

“If he sees something I can improve or something I can do better on the court, he’s there to pick me up and tell me and be honest about it,” Johnson said.

One of those teachable moments came at the end of the Spurs’ 126-118 win over the Jazz last week in San Antonio.

Johnson punctuated the triumph with a stanchion-rattling dunk in the waning moments, hanging on the rim for added effect.

The move resulted in a technical foul for Johnson, which — at least this time — did not hurt the Spurs with the game already in hand.

“Keldon does that dunk every day in practice, and I tell him, ‘You’re going to get called for a tech in a game,’" Barnes said. “You talk about certain things and how it could come back to bite you. And we don’t ever want to be in a situation where let’s say that’s in the third quarter or earlier in the fourth and that happens.”

Johnson took Barnes’ constructive criticism to heart.

“I’m 25 years old and still learning in this league,” Johnson said. “Having someone like HB around helps me grow.”

That is why when the news broke that Barnes had earned an unexpected career achievement Monday, Johnson was the natural person to announce it — with or without a microphone.

“This is his 13th year, and it’s his first Western Conference Player of the Week,” Johnson said. “He’s still improving in year 13. To me, that shows as long as you stick at it, anything is possible.”
