The 32-year-old forward is the first Spur to earn the honor since DeMar DeRozan in 2020.
Barnes helped the Spurs go 3-0 last week with wins against Oklahoma City, Utah and Golden State. In that span, he averaged 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting 61.8% from 3-point range.
In the win over the Jazz last Thursday, Barnes recorded his first double-double since April 3, 2022 with 25 points and 10 rebounds in a season-high 36 minutes.
In 100 minutes across the three games, Barnes had zero turnovers.
A 13-year- pro, Barnes set an NBA record for the latest into a career for a player to win the award for the first time. Mike Conley and Jrue Holiday both accomplished the feat in their 12th season.
Spurs point guard Tre Jones praised Barnes for his quiet, professional approach to the game.
“He’s just a kind of silent killer,” Jones said after practice Monday. “He does a little bit of everything. It doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet, (although) obviously lately it has been. But the attention isn’t going to be on himself. He doesn’t really want the attention, but he’s going to hit big shots, he’s going to make big defensive plays, get a big rebound. He just does a little bit of everything and it’s always big time for us.”
The Spurs (9-8) flew to Salt Lake City on Monday afternoon for Tuesday’s game against Utah (4-12).
