It took three quarters, but Victor Wembanyama is officially back
For the bulk of three quarters Saturday, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama watched 3-pointer after 3-pointer leave his tennis racket-sized hands and clang harmlessly off the Frost Bank Center rims.
The definition of insanity, someone once said, is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
The way Wembanyama saw it, it would have been insane not to keep shooting.
“Stop shooting?” Wembanyama asked rhetorically later. “Never.”
For some players, such an approach would be considered irrational confidence. To Wembanyama, it makes perfect sense.
Wembanyama began his first game back after an eight-day layoff launching ill-fated – and, some might say, ill-advised – 3-pointers.
He ended the night with 25 points and a mammoth fourth quarter as the Spurs completed another comeback win, this one a 104-94 decision over the Western Conference-leading Golden State Warriors.
The victory was the Spurs’ third in a row, matching their longest streak from last season. It improved their record to 9-8, the latest into a season the team has been above .500 since 2020-21.
“It was a little hard to come back in terms of conditioning in the first half,” said Wembanyama, who missed three games after banging knees with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis on Nov. 15. “But the second half I was feeling really good.”
There were heroes aplenty for the Spurs, who rallied from 17 points down with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter.
Harrison Barnes threw in 22 points, his third consecutive game of at least 20. Rookie guard Stephon Castle won the battle of Stephs outdueling the Warriors’ Stephen Curry 19 points to 14.
“It’s a fun team to be on,” point guard Chris Paul said, “because every game we go into, we don’t know whose game it’s going to be.”
On most nights, the 20-year-old, 7-foot-3 guy would be the best guess.
It was Wembanyama who pulled the Spurs over the finish line Saturday, coming alive for 12 points, a pair of blocks and five of his season-high nine assists in the final frame.
“He was a grown man in the fourth quarter,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said.
It took Wembanyama a while to get to that point.
At the end of the third quarter, Wembanyama’s triumphant return was not quite going to plan.
He had 13 points. He was 5 of 12 from the field. He was 2 of 7 from 3-point range.
He also had four turnovers.
As the fourth quarter dawned fourth, Wembanyama knew he had to locate a different gear if the Spurs stood any chance of mounting a comeback.
“It’s a switch I’m trying to flip on demand,” Wembanyama said.
Here is what that flipped switch looked like Saturday, down the stretch of the Spurs’ latest stirring victory:
- With 6:55 remaining, Wembanyama – who was 2 of 10 from beyond the arc at that point – knocked down a heavily contested 3-pointer to pull the Spurs within 87-86.
- A little more than three minutes later, he hit another deep 3-pointer to push the suddenly surging Spurs’ lead to six.
- On Golden State’s next possession, Wembanyama swooped in behind Trayce Davis-Jackson to reject a layup attempt and ignite a Spurs fast break that sent Castle to the foul line.
- Twice in the final 90 seconds, with the Spurs needing buckets to keep the Warriors at bay, Wembanyama found a cutting Barnes for layups.
The barrage left the Warriors for dead and left even Wembanyama’s more grizzled teammates in awe.
“In every game, you can always just find a moment,” Barnes said. “I think Vic does that better than anybody, just finding that moment.”
For Johnson, the most impressive part of Wembanyama’s fourth quarter Saturday was not found in the highlight-reel baskets he made.
It was found in the little things.
“Some of his rebounds, some of his catches, some of his passes, the simple stuff,” Johnson said. “That is a really big emphasis for him, because he does these amazing things. When he can also command the fundamentals, he’s a load.”
Barnes spent the first four seasons of his 12-year career at Golden State, where he had a front row seat to Curry’s Superman show every night.
When he says Wembanyama’s penchant for grabbing a game by the jugular reminds him of Curry, that comparison carries weight.
“I played with Steph for a long time, and he had that ability too,” Barnes said. “I think Vic has an ability to just flip that switch and impact the game rather than just simply say, ‘OK, I’m just going to score the basketball.’ “
A different player might not have shown up for crunch time after the horrific start Wembanyama endured.
“Vic’s confidence never wavers, and it’s so dope to see,” Paul said. “You see guys that might miss two and then pass up the next one. But a guy who’s put in the work, he’s confident. He knows the next one’s going in.”
That’s why Wembanyama kept firing away Saturday, even as he spent the first three quarters chipping the iron off the Frost Bank Center rims.
It would have been insane not to.
