DALLAS, TEXAS - NOVEMBER 16: Luka Doncic #77 of the Dallas Mavericks shoots against Harrison Barnes #40 and Charles Bassey #28 of the San Antonio Spurs in the second half of an NBA game at American Airlines Center on November 16, 2024 in Dallas, Texas.

With Wembanyama on the bench nursing a bruised right knee, the little-used Bassey finished with three blocks in a season-high 22 minutes in the 110-93 setback.

“I take pride in protecting the paint and the rim,” he said. “I love doing it.”

The 6-foot-10, 240-pound center from Nigeria logged his most minutes since he had 19 against New Orleans on Dec. 1, 2023. Nine days later, he suffered a season-ending torn left anterior cruciate ligament while playing with the Austin Spurs, the Spurs’ G League affiliate.

Bassey finally returned in the preseason, but with Wembanyama and Zach Collins ahead of him on the depth chart, he has averaged just 5.6 minutes over seven games this season.

But with Wembanyama ruled out for Tuesday night’s game against Oklahoma City, Bassey was expected to have another chance to show off his defensive skills.

“I feel like I showed last game what I can bring to the table,” Bassey said after shootaround Tuesday morning.

Rookie Stephon Castle, who is on track to become an elite perimeter defender, praised Bassey’s play on the defensive end.

“I didn’t know much about him really until I got here but just playing against him in practice, seeing what he’s doing against starting NBA bigs, I feel like he’s a pretty underrated defender,” Castle said. “And I would agree with him saying that he takes pride on the end of the floor.”

Bassey also had six rebounds, two assists and a steal against the Mavericks, which helped make up for a scoreless night on 0-for-4 shooting.

“I feel like if I play good defense, the offense is going to come,” he said.

A fourth-year pro from Western Kentucky who entered the NBA as a second-round pick for Philadelphia after playing high school ball in San Antonio for the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets, Bassey said his knee is feeling “stronger” every day after a grueling 10-month rehab.

"I was just telling myself, ‘You overcame past injuries, so you can overcome this one,’ " he said. “Obviously, the ACL rehab was way different than the other rehabs I have had in the past. This one took a lot, but I knew what was at stake and it got me stronger and definitely better during my time out.”

Bassey’s teammates said he appears to be fully recovered.

“He’s catching lobs, blocking shots, rolling out fast,” Castle said. “Other than him telling me, I would never have been able to tell he had an injury.”

Castle benefits from work with assistant

Castle’s work with shooting coach Jimmy Baron has been a factor in his increased accuracy from 3-point range.

The 20-year-old former Connecticut star has connected on 47.8% of his 3-point attempts on 4.6 attempts per game over the last five contests after he shot just 12.5% on 2.7 attempts over the first nine games.

“Getting a lot more energy into it, using my legs a lot more,” Castle said after a lengthy shooting session with Baron. “That was kind of what we were working on. Kind of spacing more off the line so I can get some energy coming into it.”

Castle praised Baron’s approach.

“I feel like he’s helped everybody with shooting, just giving everybody the fundamentals, the basics, really simple things to work on,” Castle said. “Not really trying to change anybody’s jump shot but just trying to make it easier for guys to shoot from three.”
