Business as usual as Spurs’ Mitch Johnson runs his first practice

With Mitch Johnson running his first full-scale Spurs practice since taking over for Gregg Popovich, a few players had flashbacks Monday morning to their days playing for him in Las Vegas.

“It’s kind of full circle moment for me playing for him in Summer League, so it’s really cool,” Tre Jones said.

Tuesday night’s home outing against Oklahoma City will mark the 10th game in a row Johnson has been at the helm after a mild stroke suffered Nov. 2 sidelined Popovich, but the scheduled hasn’t allowed him to oversee a workout until Monday.

“You don’t always get practice days and we know how important this is for a team like us, so we were locked in today,” Jones said.

As has been the case in games, it was business as usual for the Spurs at the Victory Capital Performance Center.

“He’s doing exactly what Pop had us doing,” Jones said of Johnson. “I think he’s still in constant communication with (Popovich) and we all kind of know the direction we want to be headed in. We know the little things we need to be doing on a day-to-day basis.”

The playbook has not changed since Johnson took over, but his approach to coaching is not a carbon copy of Popovich.

“They definitely have their differences,” Jones said. "Mitch is trying to just allow us to play real confident and with a lot of freedom. He’s been pushing that since he took over. He’s been trying to help us continue to just move on to the next play when things don’t go our way. Without Pop on the sideline, you kind of feel like you’re missing your head coach, someone that means so much to us on a day-to-day basis.

“But Mitch has been there for us and he’s been very vocal about having our backs and about making sure we stay locked in and we’re doing the right things.”

Said Zach Collins, “There really is not too much of a difference. I don’t think Mitch has yelled at us quite as much yet, but give it some time and he’ll get more comfortable.”

With time, Johnson might even get his first technical.

“I hope so,” Collins said. “I would love that. That’d be awesome. Hopefully, we’re up like 15, though, when he does it.”

Wembanyama doubtful for Tuesday night

The Spurs listed Victor Wembanyama as doubtful for Tuesday night.

Wembanyama sat out Saturday’s loss at Dallas due to a bruised right knee. The star center suffered the injury in a collision with Anthony Davis in Friday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at the Frost Bank Center.

Wembanyama did not fully participate in practice, Jones said.

“He wasn’t going up and down today,” Jones said. “We haven’t had a lot of time to rest this year, and we’ve got two days between games. That’s kind of rare right now for us, so I think it was good to give him a little extra rest. I think we’re going to see how he feels tomorrow.”

Wembanyama leads the Spurs (6-8) in scoring (22.7 points), rebounding (10.5) and blocks (3.7) after appearing in the first 13 games.

Guard Devin Vassell will return Tuesday after missing Saturday’s game due to injury management following his return from foot surgery.
