Not long after dropping a career-best 50 points on the heads of the Washington Wizards like an anvil Wednesday, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama exited the court at the Frost Bank Center and beelined to a weight room nestled in the bowels of the building.
Having enjoyed his most extraordinary night in the NBA so far, Wembanyama opted to celebrate in the most ordinary way possible.
A postgame lifting session has long been part of Wembanyama’s nightly cool-down regimen. This night would be no different, 50-point game notwithstanding.
“My first thought was, I want the rest of our performances to overshadow this one,” Wembanyama said after propelling the Spurs to a 139-130 victory. “I want to make it so that in the future, it’s just another one.”
His first 50-piece in the books, Wembanyama’s thoughts immediately turned to what comes next.
In a literal sense, that is a nationally televised game Friday at the Frost Bank Center against LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers.
For those into such things, the contest marks the Spurs’ opener to the NBA’s annual In-Season Tournament – since renamed the Emirates Cup. The Lakers won the inaugural tournament last season.
In Davis, the Lakers boast one of the few players in the league with a shot at neutralizing Wembanyama. The 31-year-old All-Star center comes in averaging 34.5 points per game, tops in the Western Conference.
That, perhaps, is one reason Wembanyama chose not to linger too long with his career accomplishment Wednesday.
“I love to celebrate the small wins and the big wins for a short amount of time,” Wembanyama said. “But we’re already locked in on the Lakers.”
Leave it to others to marvel at the dazzling display the 20-year-old Wembanyama put on against the Wizards.
It was the 14th game of at least 50 points in Spurs’ history, a feat achieved by only seven other players in club annals.
The most recent Spur to crack 50 was LaMarcus Aldridge, who rang up 56 points in an overtime win over Oklahoma City in January 2019.
Before Wembanyama, the Spurs’ last 50-point game in regulation was David Robinson’s club-record 71-point opus against the Los Angeles Clippers in April 1994.
Wembanyama tallied his 50 points Wednesday in his first 26 minutes of court time.
“The big fella,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie beamed. “That’s not what it’s going to be every night, but when he comes out with that mind set, man, it’s hard to deal with that. That’s what we want from him.”
Wembanyama is the youngest Spur to reach 50 points, and the fourth-youngest in league history behind Brandon Jennings, James and Devin Booker.
Wembanyama notched nearly half his points against Washington from beyond the 3-point arc, sinking a career-high eight of them on 16 attempts. He came one shy of equaling Chuck Person’s franchise record for 3-pointers in a game, set in 1997.
Wembanyama is the first player in Spurs history to make at least six 3-pointers in three consecutive contests, and the first in NBA history to do that while also blocking multiple shots in each game.
“If you looked at them, they were good, rhythm shots,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. "The gravity that he occupies or pulls is unique.”
A former member of the Golden State Warriors, Spurs forward Harrison Barnes knows a thing or two about once-in-a-lifetime performances.
He was on hand for Stephen Curry’s 54-point masterpiece at Madison Square Garden in February 2013. He bore witness to Klay Thompson’s epic 52-point outing against Sacramento in January 2015 that included an NBA-record 37 in the third quarter.
In Barnes’ estimation, Wembanyama’s Wednesday night was right up there.
“I’ve seen a few things,” Barnes said. “This was pretty impressive.”
What made it so?
“The efficiency and the timing and the age,” Barnes said. “That’s what makes this one of the more unique games I’ve ever been a part of. When you’re watching it live – not that it was effortless, because he was working hard – but he made it seem very fluid.”
Wembanyama’s third quarter Wednesday wasn’t fully Thompson-esque, but it was close.
He had 19 points in the frame, going 7 of 7 from the field and 4 of 4 from the 3-point stripe.
Wembanyama ended the third with 43 points, having already eclipsed his previous career high of 40 set last season against New York.
“He had an amazing night,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. “He shows us every day he’s capable of anything.”
That more than anything explains Wembanyama’s rather muted reaction to the game of his life. He wants nights like Wednesday to become as routine as his postgame lifting session.
The rest of the Spurs will vote for that.
“If he wants to have 50 every game,” Champagnie said, “well then go ahead and have 50 every game.”
In the meantime, Wembanyama is alien but not a robot.
Before leaving the arena Wednesday, he finally did take a beat to bask in what he had done.
“It is definitely a big milestone,” Wembanyama said. “It’s kind of a private club. It’s certainly something I can be proud of.”
