— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) 2024

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) 2024

Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama scores 50 points vs. Washington Wizards
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) reacts as his teammate San Antonio Spurs guard Blake Wesley (14) goes up for a dunk on the Washington Wizards during the second half at Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. Wembanyama made a career-high 50 points as the Spurs defeated the Wizards, 139-130.
With 7:30 remaining in the fourth quarter Wednesday, Victor Wembanyama came out of the game to a standing ovation from the Frost Bank Center faithful.
He was headed to the bench with a career-best 50 points and the Spurs seemed to be cruising to victory over Washington. All Wembanyama wanted to do was finish the night in peace from the comfort of the sidelines.
“It’s always better not to scare ourselves at the end of games,” Wembanyama said.
Instead, the Spurs had to sweat out the best night of Wembanyama’s basketball life before holding on for a 139-130 victory over the spiraling Wizards.
Chris Paul added nine points and 11 assists and Devin Vassell pumped in 17 points off the bench as the Spurs (6-6) survived 42 points from Jordan Poole and a late Wizards flurry to send them to its sixth loss in a row.
Wembanyama’s previous career high was 40 set last season against New York, a number he had surpassed before the end of the third quarter Wednesday.
The Spurs were ahead 120-101 when Wembanyama left the game midway through the fourth quarter. Almost immediately, the Wizards (2-8) rattled off a 13-2 run to get themselves back into the game, with Poole scoring seven points in that span.

Not long after Washington crawled within 10 points, Wembanyama was at the scorer’s table to check in, and the home crowd cheered him again.
Wembanyama remained stuck on 50 points and Washington closed within six headed to the final minute, but the Spurs were able to hang on thanks to clutch shot-making from Paul and Vassell, as well as a 6-of-8 performance from the free-throw line in the final 36.5 seconds.
When the final horn sounded, Wembanyama was at last able to celebrate his latest, greatest achievement.
Including Wednesday, there have been only 14 50-point games in the Spurs history, accomplished by only eight players. The most recent came from LaMarcus Aldridge, who poured in 56 in an overtime victory over Oklahoma City in January 2019.
Before Wembanyama, the last Spurs 50-piece in regulation came from David Robinson 1994.
“It’s kind of a private club,” said Wembanyama, who scored his 50 points in the first 26 minutes he was on the floor. “It’s something I’m proud of.”
Here are three takeaways from Wembanyama’s detonation on Wednesday:
1. Not ‘just another one’ for Wemby
It was another one of those history-making nights from Wembanyama, who became the youngest player in Spurs history to log a 50-point game.
He was the fourth-youngest in league history, behind Brandon Jennings – yes, Brandon Jennings – LeBron James, and Devin Booker.

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) November 14, 2024
He fell one 3-pointer shy of matching Chuck Person for the Spurs’ single-game record of nine. He became the first Spurs player to make at least six long balls in three consecutive games.
Wembanyama is also the first player in league history to register 20 3-pointers and 25 blocks over a six-game span.
It was a special night all around for the Spurs’ superstar, who says he is only aiming for more.
“My first thought is eventually I want the rest of our performances to overshadow this one,” Wembanyama said. “I want to make it so that in the future, it’s just another one.”
2. The apple doesn’t fall far from the coaching tree
The Spurs won for the third time in four games to improve to .500, Wembanyama had a historic game and … acting coach Mitch Johnson spent a good bit of his postgame news conference bemoaning the team’s porous defense.
Gregg Popovich would be proud.
“When you score 139 points it should not be that close of a game,” Johnson said.
No lies detected there.

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) November 14, 2024
The Spurs nearly squandered a feel-good night at the Frost Bank Center with a defensive performance that bordered on bad for three-fourths of the game.
They allowed at least 30 points in three of the four quarters, including 39 in the fourth as they struggled to put the game away.
READ MORE: Spurs dealing with ‘difficult time’ after Gregg Popovich’s stroke
It helped the Wizards were not exactly the paragon of defensive dominance either, sunk by a 41-point third quarter from the Spurs (more on that later).
The Spurs couldn’t get a handle on Poole or Washington’s bevy of 3-point shooters, the same way the Wizards could not get a handle on Wembanyama or the Spurs’ snipers. Both teams finished 18 of 44 from 3-point range.
In the end, the Spurs won in a shootout, needing to scorch their previous season high of 118 points to eke out a fourth-quarter victory. This is not the way they would prefer to win.
3. Surprise! The Spurs own third quarters now
The Spurs’ struggles in third quarters were no secret last season. No matter what the score at halftime, the third quarter was bound to be a blowout going against them.
Don’t look now, but the Spurs so far this season have been a bona fide third-quarter monster.
Coming into Wednesday, the Spurs had the second-best plus-minus in the third quarter behind only the sizzling Golden State Warriors. The trend did not end with the Wizards.
Tied with Washington at the half 67-all, the Spurs exploded to win the third quarter 41-24. That provided enough cushion for the Spurs to survive a few dicey moments in the fourth.
The third quarters have been a topic of conversation for the Spurs since before the season began.
“We talked about it even before the start of training camp,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “We want to start third quarters off on the right foot. We want to have the right energy. We’ve done a better job of being intentional about that.”
It seems like the lesson has stuck so far.
