Keldon Johnson sized up Donovan Clingan midway though the third quarter Thursday, looking up at Portland’s 7-foot-2, 280-pound monster of a center like a child peering up from the base of a mountain.

This was the man the 6-5 Johnson was expected to win a jump ball against?

Watching from elsewhere on the floor, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie figured the chances of Johnson winning the tip were about the same as finding snow on his San Antonio doorstep when he got home.

“For real?” Champagnie asked, pondering the question. “Zero.”

Johnson being the indefatigable Johnson, he had other ideas.

“Oh, I knew I was going to win it,” Johnson said.

The Spurs rode Johnson’s confidence, as well as contributions from up and down their banged-up roster, to a 118-105 victory at the Frost Bank Center that was harder earned the final score showed.

Johnson won his impossible jump ball against the Trail Blazers’ rookie Goliath, symbolic of a night in which the Spurs made a lot of their own luck.

“Second night of a back-to-back, and we got punched in the mouth last night,” Spurs acting head coach Mitch Johnson said, referring to a lopsided loss in Houston. “So the reaction and response was awesome.”

A season-high eight players scored in double figures for the Spurs, with none getting more than 17. Johnson and Malaki Branham co-led the Spurs with that number, both of them doing their damage off the bench.

Johnson added a season-best 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the campaign.

Victor Wembanyama slogged through another inefficient offensive night, ending with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Jerami Grant and Deandre Ayton each scored 21 to pace Portland.

The Spurs played to a 56-55 lead at half, and didn’t completely feel out of the woods until midway through the fourth quarter.

A Stephon Castle dunk off a slick pass from Blake Wesley gave the Spurs a 108-95 edge with 5:25 to play. From there, it was about not mucking things up.

The Spurs accomplished that, and it led to a palate-cleansing victory.

Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s win, which improved the Spurs to 4-5:

1. It’s rebounds and assists and other little things

Spurs coaches talked with the team before the game about the Blazers’ rebounding prowess. With an oversized frontcourt, Portland ranks in the top five of the league in cleaning the offensive glass.

The Spurs held their own there, and that made the difference.

Portland grabbed 14 offensive boards, but converted them into only eight second-chance points. With Johnson leading the charge, the Spurs outrebounded the Blazers overall 45-41.

Image

“We knew we had to come in here, muck it up, crash the glass and things like that,” Keldon Johnson said.

Ball movement was also on point for the Spurs. They finished with a season-high 35 assists, which led directly to a season high in points.

Wesley led the Spurs in that category with eight off the bench, while Castle and Chris Paul each had six. Nine of the 10 players who logged more than a minute of playing time registered multiple assists.

“We really don’t care who scores the ball,” Castle said. “It’s not one individual vs. the other team. Just trying to find the best shot on every possession.”

2. Blazers can’t approach the Spurs’ bench

Banged up and playing on the second night of a back-to-back after losing Wednesday in Houston, the Spurs knew their bench was going to be ultra important against the Blazers.

The second unit probably won the Spurs the game.

The Spurs had four reserves score in double figures (Johnson, Branham, Wesley and Zach Collins). Portland had four players score off the bench, period.

THE DISH. THE DUNK. :flexed_biceps: pic.twitter.com/N2bplxKec3

— San Antonio Spurs (@ spurs) November 8, 2024

The trio of Branham, Wesley and Collins — each maligned at times this season — finished a combined 16 of 19 from the field.

In all, the Spurs outscored Portland 61-31 off the bench, a deficit the Trail Blazers had no shot to overcome.

“It just shows we tried to involve everybody,” center Victor Wembanyama said of the big bench night. “And guys are here and ready to answer that.”

3. Wemby still hasn’t found a complete groove

In something that is becoming a running theme, it was another rough shooting night for Wembanyama.

He finished 4 of 13 from the field and 2 of 6 from the 3-point range. Wembanyama mitigated that by being the usual force of nature on defense, blocking three shots – and making the Blazers think twice about taking a dozen more – while snagging a four steals.

Wembanyama has not looked comfortable on offense to open the season, something he hopes to rectify when the Spurs return to action against Utah on Saturday.
