The Spurs went on to beat the Timberwolves 113-103 last Saturday, and Paul had his fingerprints all over the victory that got them back to .500.

He finished with 15 points, a game-high 13 assists – four to Wembanyama, including an explosive alley-oop – and just one turnover in 32 minutes. Two days earlier, the future Hall of Famer had posted 19 points and 10 assists (with one turnover) in a 106-88 drubbing of Utah. The Spurs outscored those teams by 49 points in Paul’s 65 minutes on the court.
The almost-fortysomething point guard continued his double-double streak in Monday’s unfortunate collapse against the Los Angeles Clippers, finishing with 14 points and 10 assists as the Spurs (3-4) squandered a 26-point lead – possibly losing the invaluable Jeremy Sochan (thumb injury) in the process – in a 113-104 road loss. Paul still finished that outing with a plus-10 on/off differential and assisted on four of Wembanyama’s nine field goals.
Through seven games, Paul has assisted on 15 of the reigning Rookie of the Year’s 47 made field goals (31.9%) – no other Spur has recorded more than three assists to Wembanyama. And these two stars, separated in age by nearly two decades, are only in the feeling out stage of a relationship that’s teeming with potential.
“We’re still sort of figuring it out as we go,” Paul told reporters following Monday’s loss to the Clippers. “He’s never played with probably a guard like me who’s constantly doing different things. I’ve never played with a center that I set screens for, you know what I mean. So it’s different.”
Paul has been a clear difference-maker through these early outings with the Spurs. He owns the most drastic splits on the team, with San Antonio posting a plus-1.7 net rating when Paul plays and a minus-8.4 rating when he sits. The vet also ranks fifth in the league in assists (8.8), third in potential assists (17.0) and fifth in assist points created per game (23.0).
Even in Year 20, Paul has managed to remain one of the league’s smoothest maestros. He’s been everything the Spurs envisioned when they inked him to a one-year, $11 million contract over the summer. And with each passing game, as his rapport with Wembanyama grows, this team looks more than capable of challenging for a spot in the NBA play-in tournament – a significant development after two straight 60-loss seasons.
“He’s not just the consummate competitor, but he is a clever, clever, clever player,” coach Gregg Popovich said of Paul during the preseason. "His IQ is off the charts. And it was always difficult because he’s thinking ahead of all of us coaches, and does that in a winning way.
“So he’s one of those guys you just you learn to hate to play against him. But at the same time, with respect to hell on him, you’re always honored to be on the same court season watching these days.”
