Gregg Popovich wants accountability, fewer mistakes from Spurs

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, left, talks with guard Chris Paul (3) during the first half of a preseason NBA basketball game against the Orlando Magic in San Antonio, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024.

MIAMI – Sandro Mamukelashvili knows Spurs coach Gregg Popovich faced a challenging situation in recent years when it came to disciplining his players.

“He has a lot of young guys who are so motivated to learn,” the 25-year-old forward said. “Of course, at some point you’ve got to tell them when they keep messing up. Like I tell my dogs, ‘If you keep messing up, you’re going in the crate. Five seconds, and then you come out.’ It’s something you’ve got to learn.”

And the punishment won’t be just a five-second stay in the crate.

The topic of putting the players on notice that he will be less tolerant of repeat mistakes this season arose when Popovich was asked in his pre-game media session if he would coach differently this year.

“Maybe winning,” Popovich said. “That wouldn’t be a bad idea, huh?”

The Spurs have won just 22 games in each of the past two seasons and haven’t enjoyed a winning season since going 48-34 in 2018-19, which also marked the last season they made the playoffs. The five-year postseason drought is the longest in club history and came after the Spurs forged a record-tying run of 22 consecutive postseason appearances highlighted by five NBA titles.

Popovich has been careful not to set expectations for this season in terms of the record, but he did suggest before the Spurs beat the Jazz 126-120 that he expects more out of his players when it comes to execution and ceasing to make the same mistakes on a consistent basis.

“I think if anything it’s a little less tolerance,” the NBA’s all-time winningest coach said. “We have been since the beginning (of training camp) … a little bit more disciplined in the sense of accountability, knowing that mistakes happen too often – (telling players) ‘You need to understand that by now.’”

In between 20-year-old star center Victor Wembanyama, last season’s NBA rookie of the year, and 39-year-old future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul, who signed a one-year contract in the summer, is a roster consisting mainly of players with three or more seasons of service with the franchise. That core includes Keldon Johnson (six seasons), Devin Vassell (four), Tre Jones (four), Zach Collins (three), Jeremy Sochan (three), Blake Wesley (three) and Malaki Branham (three).

Popovich didn’t mention any of them by name, but he hinted he would like to see a “little more professional accountability” from that group.

“The leeway that is given as far as mistakes are concerned shrinks a bit, and that comes with all of them getting older,” he said.

Popovich said minutes could hinge on players showing they aren’t susceptible to making the same errors that plagued them in the past.

“(There are) so many positions and so many minutes, and we are going to have to make some decisions,” he said. “Minutes will be hard-earned, valued to a great degree, and people who are performing well, obviously, they are going to be out there. People who don’t make as many mistakes as other people, it’s going to mean more than it did in the past.”

Players said they welcomed Popovich holding them to higher standard. The Spurs (2-1) face the Heat (1-1) Tuesday night before ending the preseason at Houston on Thursday.

“Different mentality this year, and I think everybody’s responding well,” said Johnson, the longest-tenured current Spur. “That’s just building the right mindset so we can go out there and win, knowing you can’t have repeated mistakes and expect a great result. You got to be locked in, focused, know the (scouting report).”

The Spurs were the NBA’s youngest team last season, so Popovich was more forgiving when they made mistakes. But his approach will be different this season because the team’s dynamics have changed, one player said.

“A lot of us didn’t have a lot of those experiences we went through the last couple of years,” Jones said, “but now that we’ve had them and now that we’ve brought in guys that are helping us learn those things as well, you can’t make those same mistakes over and over again. There’s no room for that, if we want to win.”

The players received a clear signal from Popovich that this season will be different with his reaction to the preseason-opening loss to Oklahoma City.

“I didn’t expect Pop to be so meticulous,” Wembanyama said. “He really dotted the i’s. We had a very detailed review of our first preseason game.”

Popovich’s call for increased accountability has been highlighted by his demand that the Spurs improve defensively after struggling on that end of the court the last two seasons.

“We’ve definitely put more of an emphasis on teaching and actually drilling things a lot, especially defensively,” Collins said. “We know that’s been a tough thing for us the last couple of years, so we’ve all tried to make an effort to get better. But (the coaches) have set the tone.”

Bottom line, the players know it’s up to them to execute. And if they fail, time in the crate could be forthcoming.

“When you don’t execute, I understand they’ve got to punish you,” Mamukelashvili said. "Teaching-wise, they teach us so good. There will always be mistakes – but there should be less mistakes.”

Aiding Popovich in his mission to bring more accountability to the team will be Paul and 13-year veteran Harrison Barnes, acquired via trade from Sacramento in the offseason.

“It just feels like he is so wise, and he has so much experience,” Popovich said of Paul. “Sometimes I get mesmerized just listening to him say things to players, and I say, ‘I should have thought of that.’ He mentors them well and he does it the right way. He makes them feel good about themselves.”

Popovich is prepared to take more of a tough-love approach.

“(Paul and Harrison are) two more bodies that will demand (accountability), that’s for sure, so in that sense it helps,” Popovich said. “But I didn’t have any problem making Timmy (Duncan) accountable or Manu (Ginobili) or Tony (Parker), or Victor (last) year. That’s not a problem for me.”

As for Mamukelashvili, he plans to keep his head down and practice obedience.

“I try to stay out of sight," he said. "Sometimes he tells me what I need to do to be better defensively maybe. I try to be a good boy and stay out of the crate. Because I hate putting my dog in the crate.”
