We got our first look at the San Antonio Spurs full team (minus a few bigs and Devin Vassell) on Wednesday night. The team was heavy on ball movement, dunks, and physical play, leading to a 107-97 win over the Orlando Magic. There were plenty of highlights from the Spur’s second preseason contest.

The Spurs ball movement was on point against Orlando. San Antonio finished the game with 27 assists, which is actually a low mark for the team compared to last year. When the offense was working, there was constant movement, screening and drives to the basket that created lanes for cutters. Jeremy Sochan and Julian Champagnie both benefitted from this style of play. Here we see Sochan, who finished with 12 points on 5-6 shooting, get the dunk after Champagnie blows by Franz Wagner.

Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul made their preseason debuts, and boy was it glorious. There were multiple chances for the veteran point guard to hit Wemby on a lob. It was electric when they connected on a lob at the end of the first quarter. The pick and roll between those two is going to unlock so much for the Spurs offense.

Wembanyama looked explosive in his first action of the 2024-25 season. He finished the game with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks in 23 minutes. He oozed confidence, maybe too much as he threw the ball away 4 times and shot just 4-15 from the field. As he shakes the rust off in the preseason, there is a lot to be excited about in year two. Wemby is going to get a lot of open looks if the Spurs move the ball like this all year. Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich played a lot of lineups with three guards out there. With guys like Blake Wesley and Stephon Castle who can flex to play off the ball and on the wing, they can afford to do it defensively. That led to more downhill attacking that bends the defense and creates shots for bigs in the paint, as we see on the dump off to Wembanyama.

Champagnie has seized his opportunity to start in the place of the injured Vassell. After leading the Spurs in scoring in their preseason opener, he had another good shooting game against Orlando. Champagnie finished with 12 points on 3-6 shooting from three. He was a favorite target of Paul, who found him for open shots from deep countless times.

It’s unclear what Sandro Mamukelashvili’s role will be this upcoming season, but he’s been steady in the preseason. Mamu provides a spark and some floor spacing off the bench and opens up the offense for the second unit. He finished Wednesday’s game with 9 points and 4 rebounds, knocking down three deep shots.

After an up-and-down preseason debut, Castle was excellent in game two. The rookie led the Spurs in scoring with 17 points and added 4 assists and 2 steals. He was relentless driving to the basket, getting to the free throw line 10 times where he converted for 7 points. Castle has shown the motor, craft and aggressiveness that made him a top-5 pick.

The swing skill for Castle is his jumper. If he can knock down open threes, he becomes an even more dangerous offensive weapon. The rookie went 2-5 from downtown against the Magic.

Wesley has been great through two preseason games. His speed and defensive aggression bring a disruptive quality to the second unit. More than anything, he’s making smarter decisions and taking care of the basketball. Through two games, Wesley has 12 assists and just one turnover. Against Orlando he had 3 points, 7 assists and 2 steals.
