Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Orlando Magic

San Antonio Spurs v Orlando Magic

Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul will make preseason debuts against the Magic.

The San Antonio Spurs are close to having their full roster as the preseason progresses. We will see Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama play together for the first time after the duo missed the Spurs preseason opener. San Antonio dropped its first game to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

On Wednesday, the Spurs will host the Orlando Magic in what should be a better look at a potential opening night rotation. San Antonio will be without their backup bigs, Zach Collins and Charles Bassey, and Devin Vassell, who’s expected to miss the start of the season. Other than those three, the Spurs should be at full health. Even in limited minutes, we will get to see how the main rotation players fit together.

What to watch for

Who starts (for real this time)?

The Spurs preseason opener was a bizarre game. Jeremy Sochan played a lot of center, and Gregg Popovich played three point guards off the bench. Wednesday’s contest should give us a better idea of the opening night starters. There have been questions about who could replace Devin Vassell in the first five – Julian Champagnie had answers on Monday. The wing finished with 22 points while shooting 6-13 from three. He would add valuable shooting alongside Paul, Harrison Barnes, Sochan, and Wembanyama in a long, defensive starting unit.

CP3’s impact

It will take some time to get used to seeing Paul don the Silver and Black. On Wednesday, we will see exactly what kind of impact the 39-year-old point guard has on this young team. Already, the Spurs looked better in the drive and kick game, moving the ball at breakneck speeds. Yet, they still turned it over 21 times in the preseason opener. Paul should provide a calming presence that can get the Spurs under control, even when they are playing fast.

We already saw the veteran tutoring young Spurs on the sidelines during the preseason opener. We’ll get to see what his coaching looks like on the court against Orlando.

Stephon Castle’s ball security

Castle looked physically ready for the NBA game in his debut, finishing strong at the rim on an athletic dunk and a tough Eurostep layup. He made some awesome reads, finding shooters on skip passes. It’s the six turnovers that you don’t like to see. The rookie is quickly learning he needs to have a tighter handle and can’t force things against NBA defenses. It’ll be a learning curve for Castle, but he’s shown signs of being ready for the challenge. Wednesday night is a chance for him to bounce back and cut down on turnovers.
