Spurs announce Jacob Tobey as new TV play-by-play announcer
Sean Elliott has his new broadcasting partner.
Several notable changes were made to the Spurs’ over the summer, and not just to the roster. Long-time Spurs play-by-play announcer Bill Land recently announced his retirement as he continues his ongoing battle with blood cancer, and while many probably expected side-line reporter and his backup, Dan Weiss, to fill the role, there will actually be a new face next to Sean Elliott: Jacob Tobey, previously of 9NEWS in Denver.
Per the Spurs’ official press release:
The San Antonio Spurs today announced their hiring of Jacob Tobey as the new TV play-by-play announcer. Tobey will join veteran commentator Sean Elliott in the broadcast booth for Spurs games, filling the role previously held by longtime announcer Bill Land who recently announced his retirement. Tobey will make his debut when the preseason tips off.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Jacob to the Spurs family,” said Mike Kickirillo, Spurs Senior Director of Broadcast. “His passion for the game, combined with his broadcast experience and holistic sports knowledge, make him a perfect fit for our team. We’re confident that Spurs fans will quickly embrace Jacob’s energy and insightful commentary.”
Most recently, Tobey served as a weekend sports anchor at 9NEWS in Denver since 2020. In addition to his work for 9NEWS, Tobey has also been a play-by-play announcer for various networks, including Fox Sports and PAC-12 Network.
A native of Sandwich, Massachusetts, Tobey graduated from Suffolk University in 2018 after completing internships with the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots. Prior to his role in Denver, he served as the weekend sports anchor at KJRH-TV in Tulsa where he covered the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, University of Tulsa and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Beyond the broadcast booth, Tobey is a passionate advocate for his Native American heritage, representing the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. He enjoys sharing his family’s culture with others and performing as a singer and guitarist at local venues.
Tobey will bring a young, fresh face to the broadcasting world but is not new to the NBA scene as he previously covered the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder as a sports anchor. He’ll have big shoes to fill considering how beloved Land is, but he will certainly find his own way and endear himself to Spurs fans with his own style. We will get our first chance to get to know him very soon, with the Spurs’ first preseason game just around the corner on Monday, Oct. 7.
You can learn more about Tobey from the video below, courtesy of 9NEWS, and if you haven’t already, be sure to follow him on Twitter X and give him a warm Spurs welcome. Welcome to San Antonio, Jacob!
