San Antonio Spurs name Jacob Tobey new play-by-play voice
Spurs Victor Wembanyama is photographed during Spurs Media Day activities Monday morning at the Victory Capital Performance Center.
A year ago, the Spurs gained a new face of the franchise with the arrival of No. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama. This year, the Spurs are adding a new voice of the franchise.
Denver-based sports anchor Jacob Tobey has been hired as the Spurs’ new TV play-by-play announcer, the club announced Thursday.
Tobey will fill the seat beside veteran color analysts Sean Elliott that for the past 21 years had been occupied by Bill Land, who announced his retirement last month.
Mike Kickirillo, the Spurs’ Senior Director of Broadcasting, called Tobey “a perfosect fit for our team.”
“We’re confident that Spurs fans with quickly embrace Jacob’s energy and insightful commentary,” Kickirillo said.
Since 2020, Tobey had served as a weekend sports anchor at 9NEWS in Denver, where he also worked as a play-by-play announcer for other networks including Fox Sports and Pac-12 Network.
The Massachusetts native graduated from Suffolk University in 2018. Before coming to Denver, Tobey worked at KJRH-TV in Tulsa, where he covered the University of Oklahoma, University of Tulsa and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In addition to Elliott, Tobey will work alongside Dan Weiss, who returns in his role as studio host.
Tobey will make his Spurs TV debut when the Spurs open the preseason Monday against Oklahoma City.
Wemby touts importance of preseason
Don’t tell Wembanyama preseason games don’t matter.
Though the results will not count in the NBA standings, Wembanyama said he hopes the team will use the five-game exhibition slate that begins next week as a springboard into a more focused regular season.
“We want to start the year strong,” Wembanyama said. “We don’t want it to be 50 or 60 games in to lock in. It starts in the preseason.”
Wembanyama appeared in four of the Spurs’ five preseason games a year ago. He said he is not sure if he will play in more games or less this preseason.
No matter what workload coach Gregg Popovich allows, Wembanyama said he plans to approach the preseason with even more focus than he did as a rookie.
“The difference with last year is it was my very first experience,” said Wembanyama, the NBA’s reigning Rookie of the Year. “I was running around doing a bunch of stuff. Now we’re trying to set a winning culture early this year. I want to be a part of it and help my team the best I can.”
Multiple Spurs plan for post-FIBA bounce
Wembanyama spent his offseason helping the French national team win a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. He wasn’t the only Spurs player to pull national team duty over the summer.
Forwards Jeremy Sochan and Sandro Mamukelashvili played with Poland and the Republic of Georgia, respectively, during FIBA Olympic qualifying tournaments.
Though neither player’s country made the full Olympic field, both Sochan and Mamukelashvili said the experience would help them during their day jobs with the Spurs.
Popovich agreed.
“For all the players for all these years who have played with FIBA in the summertime, it’s always a plus,” Popovich said. “It has been for our players and players on all the other teams, without exception.”
Sochan said he enjoyed the do-or-die competition of an Olympic qualifier, even if Poland fell short.
“It was cool and refreshing to go somewhere where every game mattered,” Sochan said. “The level of detail, just being locked in, and also the environment, it was pretty good to see. It was like the playoffs in a way.”
The stakes were even higher for Mamukelashvili, as Georgia had never played in an Olympic qualifier before.
“We all wanted it so bad, and that’s not always good,” Mamukelashvili said. "My goal is to get back to that.”
