The four-time Defensive Player of the Year passed away yesterday
There’s larger than life, and then there is Dikembe Mutombo.
Considered one of the best defensive players in history, the blocking expert was known for his finger-wagging dismissal of would-be shooters.
The 7-foot-2-inch, 260-pound center moved to the United States from the Democratic Republic of the Congo at age 21 to play college basketball for the Georgetown Hoyas.
Mutombo was chosen fourth in the 1991 NBA Draft, going to the Denver Nuggets. Dikembe played twice in the NBA Finals. First, with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001 and again alongside the New Jersey Nets in 2003 against the San Antonio Spurs.
He received the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times, led the NBA in blocked shots three times, led the league in rebounds twice, and was named to eight All-Star teams.
Not just a basketball icon, Mutombo was a humanitarian of the highest caliber. He started the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation to improve living conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was awarded the NBA’s J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, named Sporting News “Good Guys in Sports,” and elected as one of 20 winners of the President’s Service Awards, the nation’s highest honor for volunteer service.
Motumbo participated in the Basketball Without Borders NBA program, paid for uniforms and expenses for the Zaire women’s basketball team during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, and served as a spokesman for the international relief agency, CARE.
In 2022, Mutombo underwent treatment for a brain tumor.
The outpouring of love from the public was swift.

I was very sad to hear about Dikembe Mutombo’s passing. Dikembe was not only great on the court, but a force for good off it, admired and loved by those who got to know him.
