ESPN’s Bobby Marks has broken down the Spurs’ future draft capital relative to the league’s other asset-hoarders.
It’s no secret the San Antonio Spurs have been stockpiling future assets. Spurs general manager, Brian Wright, has followed the Oklahoma City Thunder’s model of acquiring as many draft picks as possible while building up its young core. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, San Antonio’s treasure trove of assets is the best in the league.
In a recent piece for ESPN, Marks ranked the five teams that hold 62 first-round draft picks over the next seven years, and 13 of the 30 selections in the 2025 draft: Oklahoma City, San Antonio, the Utah Jazz, Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets.
Here is a brief reminder of the first-rounders the Spurs own over the next seven years:

- Two unprotected from Atlanta (2025 and 2027)

If another tumultuous season occurs in Atlanta, the Spurs could find themselves with an extra lottery election in a stacked draft. The loss of DeMar DeRozan will hit the Chicago Bulls hard. A bounce-back season from Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic could ensure they stay out of the top 10 in the draft. Charlotte is a wild card, but smart money is on the young team missing the playoffs. There is a world where the Spurs could have 4 first-round picks, but it’s more likely they wind up with two – their own and Atlanta’s.
Of course, what’s great about all these picks is that the Spurs don’t actually need to use all of them. San Antonio could dangle these picks in deals to acquire ready-to-win players to surround Victor Wembanyama. Either way, these quality draft assets have put themselves in a position to build a contending roster around Wembanyama.
