Shaq says there’s one big reason Spurs’ Wembanyama can’t be dominant

SAN ANTONIO, TX - MARCH 17 Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs dunks on the Brooklyn Nets in the second half at Moody Center on March 17, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.

The way Victor Wembanyama plays does not lend itself to dominance – at least according to Shaquille O’Neal.

The Hall of Famer was a hulking 300-plus pound force of nature who amassed four NBA titles, Finals MVP trophies, 15 All-Star nods and 14 All-NBA honors. Nowadays, the “Inside the NBA” studio analyst tends to devote a good chunk of his on-screen time to slamming modern bigs he views as too soft to truly dominate and far too delicate to have been able to survive back in his heyday.

In a recent appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” O’Neal lauded Wembanyama as a talented player before disqualifying the reigning Rookie of the Year from becoming a dominant force.

“Wemby is a great player, but I don’t really think you can be dominant when you shoot jumpers a lot,” O’Neal said. “I think if he was an inside player at 7-5, the answer would be yes, but when you shoot jumpers you’re always going to go up and down. But he’s a fine player. I wish him well.”

It was an odd, if unsurprising, response.

Wembanyama, who didn’t turn 20 until Jan. 4, just authored a historic rookie season unlike any the NBA had ever witnessed. The Spurs’ No. 1 overall pick averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-best 3.6 blocks per game, joining David Robinson (1989-90), Alonzo Mourning (1992-93) and – gasp – O’Neal (1992-93) as the only rookies to average at least 20, 10 and three. Wembanyama was the only one to do it while averaging fewer than 30 minutes an outing.

The 7-foot-3.5 Frenchman also became the first player in league history to average at least three assists (3.9), one 3-pointer (1.8) and one steal (1.2) on top of that 20-10-3 line. Another first: Wembanyama posted the only season with at least 250 blocks, 100 3s and 80 steals in NBA annals.

On top of all that, the heir to Tim Duncan’s silver and black throne was both the first rookie to make an All-Defensive team and finish as runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year.

"If you just watch the game, you see how he affects the game defensively,” Spurs point guard Tre Jones said. “It’s tough because of our record, but I think most people know he’s already the best defender in the league.”

As far as the shooting goes, Wembanyama shot a below-average 32.5% from 3-point range on 5.5 attempts per game. Its’s a developing part of the young beanstalk’s game, though he also displayed a remarkable penchant for high-difficulty step-back triples, shooting a league-best 46.3% among all player who attempted at least 50 last season. In time, that could become unguardable.

And despite initial concerns about his slight frame, Wembanyama wound up shooting 70.6% from inside of 3 feet – a 24-year-old O’Neal shot 67.4% from that range in 1996-97, his first season with the Lakers and fifth overall, and the earliest year for which shot tracking data is available. That was still not proof enough for Shaq, it seems.

“You have to tell me what your definition of dominant is,” O’Neal said. “Mine was – ‘We’re terrified of him’; ‘We have to change the rules for him’; ‘Nothing we can do can stop him’; ‘We’re gonna bring extra players to stop him.’ And you have to be consistent with all those things for at least five, six, seven years.”

In time, the Spurs’ new franchise cornerstone might soon change O’Neal’s stubborn mindset. Or maybe he could just have a quick chat with Team USA, which last month required some transcendent late-game wizardry from Steph Curry to overcome Wembanyama’s game-high 26 points and beat France 98-87 in the gold-medal game at the Paris Olympics.

“That kid,” Team USA center and 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid said, “is special.”
