PtR Survey: The best and worst Spurs of all time

Duncan and Robinson

This is the first of several topics we will be voting on tin a trend that has been going around, beginning with the best and worst Spurs of all time!

Welcome to the PtR Survey! It’s officially the doldrums of the offseason, and there’s a trend that has been going around where fans have been voting for players to fill out grids like the one below, mostly using social media and “most liked comments” to get the answers.

I figured we could do something similar here for the Spurs, but we will vote with polls. That way, it is more interactive, and more people can vote if they simply follow us here at the site but aren’t commenters or aren’t big on social media. Another pro to going with polls is it will prevent troll results, as in Tyler Swish’s case when doing the Milwaukee Bucks on X, and his voters chose Thanasis Antetokounmpo as the Best Buck of all time. (It’s all in gest, but we’re trying to be a bit more serious here.)

To come up with options for the polls, I vetted some of our writers here, did some research, and went with my own gut. We’ll do few categories per article based on topic and fill out the grid as we go. There will also be an option of “other” in each poll, and if it wins, I’ll vet the comments here and on social media and go with the most liked option. With all that out of the way, let’s get started!

Today, we are beginning with the basics: who are the best and worst Spurs of all time? Best is pretty self explanatory, and there are really only three potential right answers — and even then I think we all know the answer, but we must play fair and give everyone a sporting chance. (And for the record, it’s too early to include Victor Wembanyama, and maybe Kawhi Leonard would be considered had he stayed and remained healthy, but alas, his career here ended up being a little too brief to put him in the top-most tier of Spurs players.)

“Worst” can be a little more iffy as it’s more based on interpretation and opinion. I don’t see it as career end-of-bench players, borderline NBA players (such as two-ways) or over-the-hill players who arrived late in their careers, but rather ones who were drafted or signed with the expectation they would contribute at some point but never did. (And keep in mind that this is different from a future category of “most overrated”.)

With that in mind, I went with two recent first round draftees who flamed out for different reasons and couldn’t even make it under relatively low pressure, as well as two veteran acquisitions who figured to be useful but ended up being so bad they couldn’t even get off the bench.

Be sure to vote and comment (especially if it’s not someone in the poll), and we’ll be back with the results and a new round in a few days!
