Everything Spurs fans need to know before the start of free agency

BASKET-NBA-WEMBANYAMA

After a busy draft, the Spurs will look to add more talent in free agency.

Free agency is almost upon us. On June 30th teams will be officially allowed to negotiate with free agents and if the past is any indication, the majority of deals will be inked on Sunday. Things are about to get hectic.

It can be hard to make sense of all the moving pieces and how San Antonio fits in the free agency landscape, but we are here to help. Here’s everything Spurs fans need to know about the 2024 NBA free agency.

How’s the Spurs’ roster looking going in?

We don’t know yet if the players selected in the second round of the draft will get regular contracts. Assuming Juan Nunes stays abroad, Harrison Ingram signs a two-way deal and the likely candidates to be waived leave, this is how the Spurs’ depth chart is looking:

PG: Stephon Castle - Tre Jones - Blake Wesley

SG: Devin Vassell - Malaki Branham

SF: Julian Champagnie - Sidy Cissoko - Harrison Ingram

PF: Jeremy Sochan - Keldon Johnson

C: Victor Wembanyama - Zach Collins

Again, we don’t know if the Spurs will waive Devonte’ Graham and Charles Bassey and renounce their rights to free agents Cedi Osman, Dominick Barlow and Sandro Mamukelashvili, who they recently made a restricted free agent, but we’ll consider the scenario likely for now. Without counting Ingram and assuming Julian Champagnie is not waived, they’d have 11 players on their roster already and no huge holes. What’s lacking is a talent upgrade over last year’s team, even assuming some internal development.

The good news is the Spurs have the tools to get an upgrade in free agency or the trade market.

Do the Spurs have cap space?

After trading the eighth pick, the Spurs could carve out around $26 million in cap space if they decide to act as an under-the-cap team by waiving the players on non-guaranteed contracts and renouncing free agents. They would also have the room exception worth around $8 million in that situation. They can’t combine cap space with an exception, but in total they could have around $34 million to spend on free agents.

If they decide to act as an over-the-cap team by guaranteeing some contracts and/or not renouncing their rights to free agents, they would only have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception worth around $13 million, but that scenario seems unlikely at this point.

Are there any interesting rumors involving the Spurs? What are some potential trade or free agency targets?

There are not many rumors involving the Spurs yet. They have been linked to Trae Young in the past, and the Hawks are reportedly willing to move him, but the front office has shown little interest in the star point guard. There was some buzz about the Spurs being interested in Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland, but there have been no concrete reports about talks from the more reliable news-breakers. More recently, San Antonio was rumored to be a potential landing spot for Tobias Harris, but nothing concrete links the two. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who declined his player option, could draw interest from the Silver and Black, according to the Denver Post.

What about needs? There are positions the Spurs could try to reinforce. The backup center spot was a weakness for San Antonio last year, and while a bounceback season for Zach Collins is possible, the injury he suffered late last season will prevent him from working on his game this summer. Point guard play was an issue that Castle could help solve, but it’s possible the coaching staff wants a veteran around. Adding shooting and athleticism at the wing and forward spots is a must.

Going by those needs, it makes sense for Harris and Caldwell-Pope to be linked to the Spurs. At forward, Tobias Harris is an intriguing option, as he would bring size, athleticism and shooting, which the Spurs currently lack. Caldwell-Pope seems like a good fit at the wing, where his defense and shooting could space the floor for Victor Wembanyama and free Devin Vassell to focus on offense.

There have not been point guards or centers linked to the Spurs, but Isaiah Hartenstein is the top big man in the market and Jonas Valanciunas appears as a cheaper but viable option. Tyus Jones could be a good addition at point guard if the coaching staff is unsure about Castle.

Could the Spurs make a big trade?

They sure could, despite not having many players others would likely covet outside of Wembanyama and Vassell. San Antonio has amassed a war chest of draft picks that is only rivaled by the Thunder’s and the future Hawks picks they have look extremely valuable right now, as there’s plenty of uncertainty in Atlanta following the trade of Dejounte Murray to New Orleans. The Spurs could put together a competitive package for any player whose current team wants to trade for draft capital.

The Silver and Black can also use their cap space to absorb salary without having to send any back in a trade for any player making less than $26 million. They could take on even more salary on a sign-and-trade by including Devonte’ Graham’s partially guaranteed deal. They recently agreed with Graham to push back the date on which his deal would become guaranteed, so they could be looking into sign-and-trade scenarios for expensive players.

Is it likely that a big trade will take place soon? Probably not. The market price for non-superstars has been going through inflation for a while now. The Nets got five first-round picks for Mikal Bridges in one of the latest trades. It’s reasonable to expect, say, the Jazz to ask for a similar return for Lauri Markkanen. The Spurs could in theory get a star or high-tier role player, but it would be an all-in move that a patient front office seems unlikely to do. But again, it is possible.

When does free agency start?

Teams will be allowed to negotiate with free agents on June 30th at 5 p.m. CST. We will keep you informed on everything Spurs-related.
