The Spurs selected UConn guard Stephon Castle with the fourth overall pick of the 2024 NBA draft on Wednesday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Castle played a pivotal role in helping the Huskies win their second straight national championship as a freshman. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 11.1 points on 47.2% shooting, 4.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.8 steals in 27 minutes per game.
Shooting remains a question mark after Castle shot just 26.7% from 3-point range and 75.5% from the free-throw line last season, but he’s a sturdy defender and could emerge as the lead guard the Spurs have coveted since drafting Victor Wembanyama last year.
Castle also proved up to the challenge on college basketball’s grandest stage. He averaged 18 points on 50% shooting, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and one steal in two Final Four games.
Castle, 19, joins a young Spurs core centered around 20-year-old Wembanyama that also includes Devin Vassell (23), Jeremy Sochan (22), Keldon Johnson (24) and Tre Jones (24).
