Red-hot - Spurs blaze a trail to yardstick game at Portland
On the first day of the month, which just so happened to also be the first day after the Spurs’ numbing loss to Utah, Avery Johnson and Mario Elie mapped a route out of their troubles.
Game by game they went through the schedule, sizing up each opponent before finally settling on an appropriate target date.
“Portland,” Johnson said. “We said we wanted to have won nine straight when we reached Portland.”
It’s amazing what a little planning will do. The Spurs arrived here on time and intact, tagging along a nine-game winning streak.
They haven’t discriminated during the stretch, winning with offense and defense. With blown leads and blowouts. With a last-second shot and a last-second miss. With and without Elie. With Tim Duncan scoring 17 points. With Malik Rose scoring 17 points.
And tonight’s game against the Trail Blazers, Johnson said, should help tell the Spurs how far they have come since their Jazz-inflicted beating. Or, how far they have yet to go.
“This is a good barometer for us,” Johnson said. “Especially with us losing to Utah and the Lakers earlier in the season. We beat Orlando. They’re a good team. But Portland is one of the top teams in the West.”
On the night the season opened, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said the Trail Blazers were the team to watch in the Western Conference. So far, they’ve proved him right. Heading into Thursday night’s game at Sacramento, Portland led the Pacific Division and trailed only Utah and Miami for the best record in the league.
“I’ve said all along, I think they are by far the best team in the league on paper,” Sacramento forward Chris Webber said. "They have two starting lineups. And I’m surprised how mature they are. You would think they would break down, but they keep hammering at you.
“I don’t know if anybody brings it at you continuously like Portland.”
There’s a reason for that. Trail Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy and owner Paul Allen have stockpiled the NBA’s deepest roster. Nine of the 12 players have been regular starters throughout their careers.
When Isaiah Rider struggled Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers, Jimmy Jackson came off the bench for 21 points.
“When things don’t go right, the depth helps because you’ve got guys with fresh legs coming in,” Jackson said. “This team is so deep, anybody can do anything.”
Jackson and Rasheed Wallace head the Blazers’ second unit. Seven different players have led the team in scoring.
“The best thing we have going is the chemistry and the different combinations we can use,” Portland forward Brian Grant said. “Maybe one or two combinations aren’t working, but we can go with so many.”
The Spurs used a similar approach against Golden State Wednesday night. When the Warriors jumped out to a 12-point lead less than six minutes into the game, Popovich replaced Johnson, Duncan and David Robinson with Antonio Daniels, Rose and Will Perdue. Steve Kerr entered the game soon after and the bench finished with 39 points in the 82-78 win.
“The guys off the bench were the most important thing in (Wednesday) night’s success,” Popovich said. “The entire group really went and took the win. I thought it was our best win of the year in that regard.”
The bench could be a factor again tonight. Both teams will be playing their third game in four nights. Robinson, who totaled only three points and five rebounds in 23 minutes Wednesday, has been bothered periodically during the season by his right knee, his back or general fatigue.
“From time to time it just depends,” Robinson said. "There’s always one or two nagging injuries that play a bigger role than everything else.
“I thought we were going to be OK. But I came out and I wasn’t jumping as well. I can’t speak for everybody else, but we were a little more tired than I thought we would be.”
