With Duncan in the fold, Spurs head for the Rockies Spurs put top pick on Revue

SALT LAKE CITY - Just 24 hours after officially becoming a member of the Spurs, Tim Duncan will swing into action with the team at the Rocky Mountain Revue.

Duncan, the team’s No. 1 draft choice and top pick overall, signed his three-year contract Wednesday. The Spurs received it Thursday.

Duncan, who will receive about $10.2 million over the three years, will practice with the Spurs here this morning.

This is the land of the Utah Jazz, a Midwest Division team that has delivered numerous blows to the Spurs, including two playoff punchouts in the last four seasons.

But this is where some of the Spurs and the team’s coaching staff will begin honing skills and strategies for a hoped-for run at the 1997-98 title.

The Spurs and the Philadelphia 76ers have combined forces to field a team in the Revue, an NBA summer league. Those forces arrived here Thursday.

Joining Duncan, a 7-foot center/forward from Wake Forest, are Spurs veterans Cory Alexander and Monty Williams and free agents Ruben Garces, a 6-8 forward from Providence, and Allan Ogg, a 7-1 center from Alabama- Birmingham.

The Sixers are bringing four of their June draft picks - Tim Thomas, Anthony Parker, Marko Milic and Kebu Stewart - as well as free agents Danya Adams from Boston College and Jeff McInnis from North Carolina.

The Spurs/Sixers team will practice today and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Murray High School. Duncan’s first introduction to NBA game play will be at 7 Sunday night against the Dallas Mavericks’ entry.

The Spurs/Sixers will play five games during the Revue, all at the Delta Center.

“Any competitive experience is good for our players,” Coach Gregg Popovich said. “It will Tim’s introduction to the NBA-style play and rules. The experience also helps Monty and Cory in that it continues to hone their abilities and boost their confidence in what they can do in this league.”

There is, of course, the risk of injury.

The Golden State Warriors’ first- round pick, 6-10 Adonal Foyle, broke his foot while playing in the Jersey Shore League. But Popovich said that had no effect on Duncan’s decision.

“The guys will play basketball all summer long,” Popovich said. "We can’t tell any of the players not to participate in games.

"Plus, there’s a big difference between the Utah league and the New Jersey one. The Utah league is sanctioned by the NBA, like the one in Los Angeles, and the Shore League is not. The sanctioned leagues are the best venues; they are safer and more organized. We will have the regular league refs during the games.

“(Duncan) decided to come because he wants to learn to play basketball at our level. He’s smart enough to learn so he’s just going to go do it,” Popovich said.

Duncan will face a variety of opposing big men during the Revue: 7-1 Jim McIlvaine and 6-10 Alaa Abdelnaby with the Seattle team, 7-2 Greg Ostertag with Utah, 6-11 Eric Leckner with Chicago, 7-0 Kevin Salvadori with Sacramento, 6-11 Jermaine O’Neal with Portland, 7-0 Paul Grant with Minnesota, 6-11 Todd Fuller with Golden State and 7-2 Dwayne Schintzius with Phoenix.

Popovich will coach the first three games, and Spurs assistant coach Paul Pressey will handle the last two.

“We’ll be working on the players’ specific skills and general knowledge of the game,” Popovich said. “This also is where you can begin to build the character and mind- set that it takes to earn a championship.”

SALT LAKE CITY - There was more than a little huffing and puffing at the Murray High School gym Friday morning.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich ran the first practice of his players in the Rocky Mountain Revue and, afterward, smiled and said it’s going to take a few workouts to get his group in playing shape.

“I think we should give them a couple of days, don’t you?” Popovich said after the two-hour set.

The Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers have combined to field a team that will begin actual game action at 7 p.m. Sunday against Dallas in the Delta Center. The squad practiced twice Friday and will go again in the morning and evening today.

The most notable participant in the summer league, of course, is Tim Duncan, the Spurs’ No. 1 draft choice and the top pick overall.

The Sixers’ top pick, forward Tim Thomas, missed the first practice because of blisters suffered at a previous Sixers camp. Thomas did play in the evening practice.

“I got winded and didn’t do very well,” said Duncan, who continued a tradition from his Wake Forest years by wearing his practice shorts backwards. “The altitude got to everybody.”

Popovich put in basic offensive and defensive schemes, but lame passes, missed shots and some half-hearted running characterized a good part of the action until the gathering separated into two teams for five-on-five full-court scrimmaging.

“The effort has to come from within, not from the urging of the coaches, otherwise you’ll be playing in Turkey or someplace,” Popovich told his team.

Duncan, a 6-11 forward/center, had his ups and downs. He knifed in for a nice slam of a teammate’s miss. He pushed himself to get most of the rebounds. He had his problems handling the ball and getting shots off against 7-foot Allan Ogg. His spin moves failed to rotate him around Ogg’s body and to the bucket.

He was wise enough to sit on the floor for a breather during a short timeout when his team gathered around Popovich for some instructions on the final two or three plays.

“You just don’t know what kind of basketball condition you’re in until you get out there,” Duncan said. "I need a lot of work. That’s why I wanted to attend this summer league. It’s just a good way to get started.

“It’s a question of just getting into it, getting your rhythm. It will take all of us a few days, we’re a little off key. I’m already looking forward to getting into the NBA games, to getting a feel for that play.”

Duncan signed his $10.2 million, three-year contract with the Spurs on Wednesday and arrived here Thursday night.

“No, I really don’t think that much about the money,” Duncan said when asked if he had any special thoughts while signing the contract. “Actually, I was just glad to get it over with. I haven’t been thinking about what kind of impact it would have on me. I am pretty anxious to start playing.”

Popovich said he liked what he saw of Duncan, who will open the season playing alongside David Robinson.

“Tim looks like everything we expect him to be,” Popovich said. "He’s obviously not ready to play right now, but neither is anybody else in the NBA.

“It’s just going to be matter of playing competitive ball. He’s going to get a feel for the new offenses and defenses.”

Spurs reserve point guard Cory Alexander, playing in his first Revue, and forward Monty Williams, attending his second, received their share of praise from Popovich.

“Cory has been playing a lot this summer and it showed,” Popovich said. "He has a lot of leadership, a real nice take-charge attitude.

“Monty was working his pants off, he’s in good shape. He was playing some good defense.”

Alexander said he felt “great” after the workouts. Rookie heads home: Kebu Stewart, the 6-8 rookie Sixers forward, returned home to California Friday afternoon because of an illness in the family. He is not expected to return to the Revue.

Perdue considers Admiral fit for assault on league

SALT LAKE CITY - David Robinson is healthy and “ready to go,” Spurs backup center Will Perdue said.

Perdue recently spent a week with Robinson at the latter’s summer home in Colorado shooting, running and working on their post moves.

“He proved to me that he is ready to go,” Perdue said during a telephone conversation from his Chicago home. "He’s fine, mentally and physically. I was surprised at how good of shape he’s in.

“We did some banging, not too much. There’s no point in pushing it at this stage of the summer. But we’re both where we want to be at this point. Working at that altitude also was a big plus in the conditioning process.”

Robinson, of course, is recovering from season-wrecking lower-back strain and a broken foot.

He played only six games last season, a kind of yin-yang happening, with the good resulting in the appearance of Tim Duncan, the NBA’s No. 1 draft pick, in a Spurs uniform.

Perdue also suffered through a bout of injuries - eight games lost to a fractured thumb, five to a fracture under his right eye, two to a sprained ankle and two to a pulled hamstring.

“If we can just stay healthy, we’ll win a lot of games; and that (NBA) title is still the objective,” Perdue said. China syndrome: Spurs coach Gregg Popovich likes to warn players here for the Rocky Mountain Revue that half-hearted performances will result in closed doors to NBA teams and open doors only to teams in distant lands.

He might suggest that his reserve center in the Revue, Allan Ogg, speak to his NBA hopefuls.

Ogg, out of Alabama- Birmingham, has traveled the overseas circuits, landing in Chendu, China, last season.

“Yeah, I had some very bad experiences there,” said the good- natured 7-foot-1 fellow, at the Revue mainly to apply some muscle to Duncan.

A couple of the worst?

“I was staying in a room like a room in an Olympic Village and the lights blew out,” Ogg said. “They moved me to another room but there were rat droppings all over the bed. They said, ‘That’s OK,’ and just brushed them off. I said, ‘No, what about the rats?’ They banged the bed around a little and, sure enough, a couple of rats ran out of the room.”

But Ogg said he wasn’t completely sold on vacating that room until a “huge black spider” ran up the wall.

Ogg, hoping to attract the attention of scouts for the European teams, also recalled a near-miss during mealtime.

“Myself and the other American on the team, Casey Crawford out of Pepperdine, were told after one victory to ‘eat upstairs. We’re going to eat dog.’ We said, ‘What?’ Our interpreter said, ‘It’s OK, it’s a very big dog.’”

Ogg, who noted he was paid $5 per dunk and bonus money for wins, said he lost 25 pounds during his five-month stay in Chendu. Familiarity: Attending the Rocky Mountain Revue tends to remind me of a line from the song on the TV show “Cheers” that says “Everybody knows your name.”

Here, it’s “coach.”

Mentors from the various teams invariably call out, “Hi, coach,” to their corresponding figures from other teams. “How you doing, coach?” “Great, coach. You?” The tag applies to all assistant coaches as well as the head men.

Great idea for those of us troubled with remembering names, let alone faces.

“Hey, reporter. How are ya?”

“Hi photog. Long time, no see.”

Nah, it just doesn’t have that ring to it. Bulls again? Chicago’s re- signing of Coach Phil Jackson - surprise, surprise - has some already tossing in the 1997-98 towel. The Bulls, they say, will win another title with Phil and Mike. Skip next year, wait until Phil, at least, leaves.

SALT LAKE CITY - This is not quite out of the frying pan and into the fire, but it’s a start.

The Spurs’ and Philadelphia 76ers’ collection of veter- ans, rookies and NBA hopefuls will get a break from their Rocky Mountain Revue practice routine and play exhibition games for the next three days.

The Spurs-Sixers team takes on Dallas at 7 p.m. CST today, then faces Seattle at 7 Monday night and Phoenix at 10 Tuesday night.

“Coaches want to practice; the players want to get into games,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich after a Saturday morning practice. The players scrimmaged against Golden State during their Saturday evening workout.

“But the aim is still the same: work on some basics and generally just get better mentally and physically. I had to pull some teeth today, but we got them to work pretty hard. Now we’ll see what carries over into the games.”

The Spurs’ ballyhooed draft pick, Tim Duncan, echoed his coach’s sentiments.

“It will be nice to start going against some different talents,” Duncan said of the upcoming contests.

Duncan steadfastly defended his decision to attend the camp, a purely optional activity.

“I’m really not focusing in on any one thing here. I just want to get overall better, get used to the NBA system,” he said.

What, in particular, sticks out right now?

“I’m tired,” he said after the Saturday morning practice. “That definitely sticks out.”

Duncan and his teammates, including Spurs veterans Cory Alexander and Monty Williams, spent the bulk of the workout ironing out techniques on defending pick- and- roll and post-up plays and running fast breaks.

“That’s all pretty new to me,” Duncan said of the pick- and-roll strategies. “We don’t run the pick- and-roll much in college. It will all come in time.”

Duncan will be pitted primarily against Dallas’ 6-foot- 11 veteran Stacey King and 6-11 rookie Darnell Robinson tonight. He should see a variety of pick-and-rolls and post-ups.

Through the practice sessions, Duncan has labored against 7-1 Allan Ogg, a veteran of two years’ NBA experience and five more playing on various overseas teams.

“So far, he’s most effective in the post,” Ogg said of Duncan. “He’s pretty strong. He can get (to) his position and score.”

There will be a few new wrinkles for the players and NBA referees to handle through the Revue games. In place will be the four changes approved by the league’s owners this summer:

Players no longer will be able to draw charging fouls if the offensive player is within the half-circle that extends four feet from the center of the net.

Perimeter defenders cannot place a hand or forearm against an offensive player facing the basket.

The three-point line has been extended to as far as 23 feet, 9 inches.

Players cannot call timeouts while falling out of bounds. In addition, the league will be testing a proposed defensive change that allows players on the strong side to play any type of defense, including double-teaming the post player before an entry pass is made.

Duncan feasts on opponents for 16 points in losing effort

SALT LAKE CITY - Tim Duncan treated his first NBA-sanctioned game like a basketball buffet Sunday night.

He sampled everything.

Duncan, the Spurs’ No. 1 draft pick, tried out his post moves, moved the ball along on the perimeter, took a few jumpers, blocked some shots and threw his body around some on defense and offense.

He got into early foul trouble and then, continuing to play a methodical, thinking game, picked up just two whistles in the second half.

He took the game-winning shot and missed it.

Duncan did it all wearing his shorts backward, an odd habit he adopted at Wake Forest that will change because of NBA uniform rules when the regular season starts.

The rookie center didn’t dominate, but he seemed to be getting his bearings during the San Antonio/Philadelphia combined team’s 78-77 loss to Dallas in the Rocky Mountain Revue before about 300 fans at the Delta Center.

Duncan held court after the game and drew a few amused reactions from the media. He picked the nuts out of an almond candy bar before consuming it. He sat, legs tucked, on the ledge in front of his locker.

“This is why I’m glad I got the contract signed and was able to come here (to the Revue),” said Duncan, who finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

"I made a lot of mistakes tonight, the type of mistakes that now I won’t make in the preseason or early regular season games. I picked up some illegal defense calls, some fouls. I’ll get to know what I can do and get away with.

“I like to be aggressive and get my body in there, but I think I usually do it pretty cleanly. I didn’t play particularly well, but I’m learning the ways.”

Dallas led 78-77 after Samaki Walker hit a shot over the 76ers’ Tim Thomas with 23 seconds left. After a timeout, the Spurs/76ers got the ball to Duncan in the low post, but he missed his try over Stacey King.

“I knew I had a chance, but I short-armed it,” Duncan said.

Dallas’ Kevin Ollie then missed two free throws and left the door open a slight crack with 1.7 seconds left. However, the Spurs’ Cory Alexander missed on a long three- point effort.

“The guys all played a pretty good game,” said assistant Paul Pressey, who coached the Spurs/76ers from the bench as Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich observed. “The players all have to get used to the new rules on offense and defense. Some have to get used to the NBA.”

Pressey was left admiring Duncan’s all-around game.

“He’s a very patient player,” Pressey said. “He got into that early foul trouble, but was still able to finish the game. He’s patient on the post. He tries to score when it’s there. If he’s doubled, he looks to pitch it out.”

Duncan appeared to spend a lot of time on the perimeter, often trailing his fast-breaking teammates and barely getting across center court before a shot was made or missed.

“We wanted to put him on the perimeter to see how he can swing the ball around, handle the situation out there,” Pressey said. “We get him to the post when we want him there.”

The Spurs’ Monty Williams led all scorers with 17 points, the bulk coming off slashing drives.

“I missed a lot of assignments tonight,” Williams said. “I think I was trying to do too much. But the idea of working here is to get mentally, as well as physically, ready for the season.”

Alexander played 30 minutes, but hit just three of his nine shots and had six assists. But he took the offensive reins and was a vocal leader.

“I wouldn’t say it was a good game or a bad game, just a game,” Alexander said. “It’ll take a little time to click. We have a lot of new guys here and a lot of guys who haven’t played in the NBA.”

What might have been: Utah Jazz did conference a favor This story finally can be told.

Early in the 1990s as the Alamodome construction was starting, but before the San Antonio Spurs decided to move from the now-gone Arena, the Texas Graphic Arts conference was booked in the Alamodome for June 1994 by the city Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Then the Spurs moved to the Alamodome in 1993 and had a good regular season its first year there. So good, that the staff at the city Convention & Visitors Bureau was getting nervous.

If the Spurs reached the National Basketball Association finals that 1993-94 season, the finals could not have been played in the Alamodome, which was booked for that time by Texas Graphic Arts.

Switching Texas Graphic Arts to a later time was not an option. The organization literally owned those dates in the Alamodome.

The Spurs entered the playoffs, but the CVB staff didn’t have to worry long. The team was bounced in the first round by the Utah Jazz three games to one.

But had the Spurs reached the finals? Where would the home games have been played? The choices were either back to the Arena, which was still standing then, or the University of Texas at Austin’s basketball arena known as the Drum.

Texas Graphic Arts still meets in the Alamodome. It since has returned, as it did this year, in July, a month after the NBA finals.

Scholarship fund set up in memory of bank officer Bank of America: staffs in San Antonio were saddened last week by the sudden passing of the bank’s neighborhood development officer, JoAnn Lawson-Dauphin, 48, who died in her sleep Wednesday after having gone to bed feeling ill. Services were held Saturday.

The bank has set up a scholarship fund for Junior Achievement of South Texas in Lawson-Dauphin’s memory. She had been active on JA’s board of directors. Also, accounts have been set up to benefit Lawson-Dauphin’s children, Christine and Michael Dauphin.

“We are shocked and saddened by the news. Not only was JoAnn a vital part of the San Antonio community, she made a tremendous contribution to Bank of America’s community development efforts in her role as San Antonio neighborhood development officer,” said Jim Richardson, senior vice president of community development for Bank of America Texas.

Contributions to any account may be made at any Bank of America branch office in San Antonio.

Carry a gun? Check your homeowners liability policy It turns out that Texans licensed to carry concealed handguns are not protected by the main source of personal liability insurance, their standard homeowners policy, for damage from use of the gun.

More than 140,000 Texans have the licenses. But they may be sued if they use their firearm in self defense, defense of others or in defense of their property. Gunshot victims, or their families, may sue, too, for personal injury or wrongful death. But the standard homeowners policy excludes damage intentionally caused by the insured.

Fort Worth-based Cottonwood Insurance Agency says it is among the first in Texas to offer $100,000 and $300,000 liability policies for licensees. The policies are being marketed first in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“Imagine 140,000 licensed drivers operating cars without automobile insurance,” said Gary Ray, president of Cottonwood Insurance Agency.

S.A. shines in rates of home ownership The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says U.S. homeownership is on the rise, increasing 0.3 percent to 65.7 percent in the second quarter of this year over the previous quarter.

In Texas, though, it has been on the decrease this year, from 62.4 percent in the first quarter to 62.3 percent in the second quarter.

But San Antonio has one of the best increases in homeownership rates among U.S. cities, going from 60.2 percent in the first quarter to 63.9 percent in the second quarter, a rise of 3.7 percentage points.

That’s still below the national average, though, giving the city more room to improve.

HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo, who took over HUD earlier this year from outgoing HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros of San Antonio, attributes the rise in homeownership rates primarily to U.S. job increases and steady interest rates.

Spurs wisely will bide time

The San Antonio Spurs organization made a wise, prudent decision Tuesday to play basketball and stop trying, for now, to go into the facilities business.

The owners group, led by Peter Holt, will give the new-arena issue a well-deserved rest. Fans will flock to the Spurs this year in what may be a prime year of basketball.

But the day of reckoning is still out there. That’s the day when the lack of luxury-suite revenue from the Alamodome cannot keep up with soaring player and coaching salaries in a league still in a dizzying upward swirl of worldwide success.

The competitiveness of the Spurs product may not keep pace, resulting in falling ticket revenue, putting the owners in the bind. San Antonio, in short, won’t be able to afford a competitive NBA team as league valuations jump ever higher.

But that day was pushed back, perhaps several years, on May 18 when the Spurs won the National Basketball Association lottery, winning the rights to Wake Forest’s powerful Tim Duncan.

Although Holt downplays the Duncan factor, the employment of Duncan within the freshman salary cap and on a three-year contract gives the issue of building another arena for the Spurs some breathing room.

But the day of reckoning is still there. “We won’t be signing (a player such as) Tim Duncan,” Holt said. “Perceive that as a threat, if you will.”

And many people will. Others will just say goodbye.

What the Spurs have done, essentially, is conduct a $20,000- plus survey to find out what was evident from a portable sign outside of a tire shop on Nacogdoches Road in 1995, just after the Spurs bowed out of the Western Conference Finals.

“We luv ya Spurs,” the sign said. “But no new taxes.”

The Spurs are riding a rather thin margin of profitability. Despite the losing season last year, injury insurance payoffs - especially for David Robinson - kept the club in the black.

Next season, reaching the playoffs, perhaps even the second round, will be necessary to break even.

But the shot clock, symbolically, has been reset with Duncan joining the team. And the Spurs have opted to pass the new-arena ball to the community on Tuesday.

The idea of a new entertainment complex may yet get within shooting distance. It must be cast forcefully as a place not just for the Spurs, but also a larger venue for the Stock Show and Rodeo and other attractions.

But San Antonio has other needs. Better schools, first and foremost. Replacing the soon-to-be- diminished Southwest Side economy as Kelly AFB closes is another. A permanent concert hall for the San Antonio Symphony is vital so that it doesn’t vanish, leaving the city looking less- civilized than it did in the 1850s.

The Spurs are important, too. As Holt said Tuesday, it’s the only game in town. It’s the city’s big- league label.

Houston lost its pro-football Oilers, but watch how much money it will offer to burn trying to grab a replacement.

So much to ponder. Fortunately, there’s a little more time to do so.

Instead of trying for a three- pointer with a January referendum, the Spurs will pass the ball back and forth awhile, waiting for a better shot.

Suns stay up to capture late-show victory over Spurs/Sixers

SALT LAKE CITY - The Spurs/Sixers and Suns must have thought they had wandered into some type of Midnight League on Tuesday.

They played the late game and didn’t tip off until 9:40 p.m. (10:40 p.m. San Antonio time). And the Spurs/Sixers finished by wishing they were anywhere but in the Delta Center.

They came out the aggressor and built a 19-point lead in the first half. But they must have figured the game was over and left that early style in the locker room.

The Suns attacked in the second half and took an 84-76 victory back to their hotel.

Spurs rookie Tim Duncan said he didn’t feel very well before the game and he probably didn’t feel that good about his performance after the game as well.

Duncan staggered at the start, playing some early matador defense, bricking a 19-footer and failing to get position for some boards.

He had troubles offensively, but he picked up his rebounding and defense.

The Suns challenged throughout the second half and grabbed the lead for good at 73-71 on a three- point shot by Kenny Archbold with 3:41 left to play.

The Sixers’ Anthony Parker, drafted 21st by Philadelphia, sparked the team this night. He scored 19 points in the first half to help push the Spurs/Sixers to a 47- 28 lead.

There were a variety of highlights to help keep the scant crowd of about 500 - 100 by the fourth quarter - attentive.

Duncan was involved in most of them:

He grabbed a Suns turnover at halfcourt and lumbered to the basket. He was fouled low in the lane and put down both free throws for his only points of the first half. He spun a nifty behind-the-back bounce pass through traffic in the lane to a cutting Parker for a score.

Duncan did it again - this time a no-look bullet toss inside for a bucket.

He initiated this one, flipping a pass to Marko Milic who touched- passed it behind his head for an assist. Rocky Mountain Revue notes: Spurs general manager/coach Gregg Popovich flew to New York on Wednesday. He reportedly was there to answer a grievance filed by forward Charles Smith.

Smith is contesting not being paid for the Spurs’ March 21 game in Sacramento. Smith left the team after the March 20 game in Phoenix and did not rejoin the squad until the March 23 game in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

Popovich is expected to return here today.

No arena, no Duncan later - Spurs say lost revenue deters re-signing

Spurs No. 1 draft pick Tim Duncan will be playing for another team in the 2000-2001 season if the franchise can’t find a new arena home, the team’s principal owner predicted Tuesday.

Peter Holt made the comment at an afternoon news conference staged to dis cuss findings of a poll on the need for a new arena in San Antonio.

In the Spurs-sponsored poll, citizens spoke highly of their only major-league sports team, but they opposed higher taxes for an arena.

As a result, Holt said the Spurs have called off efforts to seek a referendum on the issue.

Holt’s surprise announcement raised several questions, foremost being the team’s ability to pay star players and remain competitive in the San Antonio market.

“How do we resolve this issue?” Holt asked. “Right now, the answer is, ‘I don’t know.’”

The Spurs have made it known that the Alamodome is lacking in quality premium seating - primarily, luxury suites - a big money-maker in the NBA.

Without citizen support for an arena with expanded revenue capacity, it may only be a matter of time before rumors resurface regarding a Spurs move to another locale.

“We have no plans to go to any other city,” Holt said. “We could stay in the Alamodome - and by saying this, maybe I’m cutting my own throat - for as long as our contract is with the Alamodome. But I can guarantee you we won’t be re-signing Tim Duncan, OK. If you want to call that a threat, please do.”

Duncan, a 6-foot-11 center/power forward from Wake Forest, is a multitalented player expected to carry the Spurs back into the playoffs this season.

The Spurs secured his rights when they won the lottery in May and then selected him No. 1 overall in the draft last month. They recently signed him to a three- year contract worth $10.2 million.

Re-signing him might cost the Spurs up to $200 million, a price Holt said the team probably wouldn’t be able to afford without additional revenues generated by an arena.

“The key is not staying in San Antonio,” he said. “The key is can we truly stay in San Antonio and be competitive in the NBA and not have a continually losing team?”

Holt has high hopes for Duncan to emerge as one of the league’s best players. It follows that he may command a superstar’s salary. Four players in the NBA signed contracts last summer worth $100 million or more.

In three years, Holt said Duncan’s asking price probably will be beyond the team’s capacity to pay - if there is no arena.

“If Tim Duncan plays to his potential and he becomes the first $200 million man, and we don’t have new facilities or economic capabilities - no, then I guess we wouldn’t be in the hunt,” Holt said. “It doesn’t mean we’re leaving San Antonio. It just means that we’re not in the hunt for him and we just won’t have that superstar, if that’s what he turns into.”

Duncan, playing in the Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City, said Tuesday this news isn’t a concern for him at this point.

“I’ve got three years. My job is to play basketball. That (new arena problem) is his job,” he said. “I’m sure he and Pop (coach Gregg Popovich) and T.J. (media services director Tom James) will get it done.”

Holt asked for guidance from political and civic leaders on the arena issue in order to prevent the team from lapsing into a non-competitive posture in the league.

“What we will say is there is time for dialogue,” Holt said. “There’s time for the community to get involved. There’s time for leadership to get involved - political leadership and other leadership. We want to go back to really focusing on (the upcoming) season and see what others come up with.”

Without Duncan, some fans might wonder why the Spurs would bother to stay in business. He is the player who, along with David Robinson and Sean Elliott, could take the team to its first NBA championship.

Holt struggled to explain why he would remain the owner of the team if he couldn’t afford to pay the market rate for one of his best players.

“You know, the ‘best players’ is defined many different ways,” he said. "We believe there are a lot of different ways to sign the best players. (Signing) David Robinson (in 1995 at below market value) has proven that. Look at (Utah’s) Karl Malone and John Stockton. They’re not the highest-paid players.

“There are a lot of different ways to keep good players. I believe Tim Duncan, with his character, will look at all factors, not just the dollar value.”

Reminded that he said he didn’t foresee Duncan re- signing with the Spurs if they couldn’t secure an arena plan, Holt hedged a bit on his previous statement.

“If I said that, I didn’t mean to say it that way,” Holt said. “What I meant was, it would become more and more difficult for us to sign a Tim Duncan-type (player) … three years (or) five years out if salaries keep escalating.”

Recently, a St. Louis-based promoter of NBA exhibition games said that if an arena effort failed in San Antonio, then the Spurs would become a hotly pursued property by cities looking for a potential relocation tenant.

“If the referendum doesn’t pass,” said Joe Yates, who has brought NBA exhibitions to the new Kiel Center since 1994, “I think you’ll see someone make a strong run at them. That won’t be a secret.”

Legislation approved Austin in June allows Texas citizens to raise taxes for the purpose of buiding sports facilities. The law gives taxpayers the right to vote on the issues in referendums.

Before Tuesday’s announcement, the Spurs hoped to have an item on the ballot as soon as January. With those plans on hold, talk will almost certainly turn to potential suitors for the franchise. Cities like Nashville, Tenn., St. Louis, Anaheim, Calif., and New Orleans are reportedly looking for teams.

Holt, who owns 31 percent of the team’s stock, said the Spurs aren’t for sale. But he acknowledged that there may be renewed interest in the team from out-of-town investors.

SALT LAKE CITY - The road to victory doesn’t always go through the big man.

The Spurs/76ers combined team evened its Rocky Mountain Revue record at 1-1 by snatching a 101-91 victory in the final minutes over the Seattle Super- Sonics on Monday night.

San Antonio-Philadelphia won it down the stretch without the services of rookie Tim Duncan, who fouled out with 2:48 left to play, picking up No. 6 on an offensive call.

He had just picked up No. 5 with 3:10 remaining and the scored tied at 91.

Monty Williams, the Spurs/76ers’ leading scorer with 24 points, completed a three-point play for a 94- 91 lead with 1:58 left.

The Sonics were stopped at the other end and Cory Alexander, contributing 18 points and seven assists, found the Sixers’ Marlo Milic with a long pass that Milic dunked for a 96-91 edge.

Duncan had both his moments and struggles. He finished with 13 points, just three in the second half, six rebounds and a blocked shot.

Duncan got a taste of Seattle’s free-wheeling running game and a huge dose of 7-foot-1 Sonics center Jim McIlvaine.

The veteran McIlvaine bounced the rookie off the post a time or two and generally muscled him around. Duncan absorbed most of the blows and managed a couple of scores over him.

His better moment came when he took McIlvaine outside, faced him and drove past him for a bucket.

“I think both (Duncan) and David Robinson can really make those big guys pay by taking them outside and facing them,” Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer said. “They can really use their quickness out there.”

However, Duncan wasn’t overly pleased with his performance in his second Rocky Mountain Revue game.

“He’s a big body, very strong,” Duncan said of McIlvaine. "I didn’t play that well against him. They had a lot of big, quick bodies and they got into the lanes and disrupted our offense.

“But I’m learning. I’m getting along with the rules, but I didn’t go along with all the calls tonight.”

Duncan and Philadelphia’s Milic combined to wow the crowd in the first half. Duncan started it when he timed a last-second leap to block a fast-break Seattle layup attempt. Milic followed by breaking away, then skying from 10 feet out and tomahawking a slam at the other end.

Alexander continues to play well. He energized most of the Spurs/76ers attacks. He has become ever more vocal as a floor leader.

“That’s what we’re looking for from him,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “We want him to be the take-charge guy and he’s been doing that.”

Williams declined any mention of his becoming any more vital a component in the Spurs’ scheme.

“I’ve never been the go-to guy and I never will be,” Williams said. “Tim is the go-to guy while we’re here. Cory was just getting the ball to me. It was just the way it went.” Revue notes: Duncan will continue his basketball education after the Spurs conclude their games Friday.

He plans to travel to Colorado and work with Robinson and Will Perdue, the Spurs’ veteran centers, in Vail for four or five days.

“They will go one-on-one, work on their moves, their defense,” Popovich said. “It will be a continuing learning experience for Tim.”

- Williams sat out the Monday morning practice, nursing a sore left foot.

“I’ve had it awhile,” Williams said. “I stepped on a stick while I was fishing (July 4). It swells.”

He said the foot again began breaking down during the game against the Sonics on Monday night.

- Alexander’s contract expires after next season. Under the rules of the NBA’s collective-bargaining agreement, his contract could be redone this summer, along with several other rookies whose pacts were completed during the 1995 off-season.

“Of course I’ve thought about it, but that’s the team’s decision,” Alexander said. “If they say they want to talk about it, I will.”

Tuesday was a day of reckoning for the San Antonio Spurs.

A January referendum on tapping public funds to finance a new arena, Spurs Chairman Peter M. Holt announced, is out of the question. The Spurs crunched the numbers from its own poll, and “they’re not good for us.”

And without a new arena, Holt added, “I can guarantee you we won’t be re-signing Tim Duncan, OK. If you want to call that a threat, please do.”

Duncan is the super-hot up-and- comer who owners hope will take the Spurs back into the playoffs. The Spurs got him by winning the lottery in May and making him their No. 1 draft choice.

But after his three-year, $10.2 million Spurs contract, Duncan could be worth $200 million, which is out of the Spurs’ reach unless there are additional revenues - presumably from concessions and parking - that a new arena would supposedly generate.

Gee, Peter, why didn’t you run ads with Duncan’s face, a revolver superimposed on his temple and a caption reading: “Give us the arena or the kid gets it!”

In fairness, Holt did modify his statement later, explaining that top-rung star players in the NBA now cost more money than the Spurs can afford.

“We’re playing in the smallest market in the NBA,” Holt conceded, “and we can’t change the laws of economics.”

No you can’t, but there is a bit more to this than immutable economic principles.

Let’s also face reality.

San Antonio is also the poorest NBA market, and the one with an all-but-nonexistent corporate base.

The Alamodome is not the best place to watch basketball because it was built for an NFL team that we also cannot afford. But the Spurs are playing there because previous Spurs owner B.J. “Red” McCombs insisted that without the Alamodome concessions contract, the Spurs would “not be viable” and would have to leave town.

After extorting the dome concessions and moving out of the arena - which was later unceremoniously torn down in the name of progress by shortsighted city leaders - McCombs sold the team but kept the concessions, which were later sold separately.

For years, the Spurs have done marvelously well in the face of NBA salaries spiraling to dizzying heights. I admire the present Spurs management who have managed to keep the “Fan Index Cost” down.

A family of four can watch a Spurs game and take home some souvenirs for a mere $186, far below the national average of $231.

But let’s also face the reality of what $186 means to the average San Antonian, who barely earns $21,586 per year - 16 percent less than the average American.

And let’s also face the reality now staring us in the face. While we’ve known for years that thousands of higher-than-average- wage Department of Defense jobs would vanish from our local economy, we squandered local resources to encourage the creation of low-wage tourism and service sector jobs. Now, even if we were to squander $120 million in tax money to build a new arena with 60 luxury skyboxes, to whom would the Spurs rent them?

Hotels? Theme parks? Restaurateurs? Tour operators?

Yes, let’s face the reality of the local economy we’ve developed and admit it: We’re either out of the NBA’s league or the NBA is out of San Antonio’s league.

And we won’t have to amend the laws of economics to stabilize the Spurs tenuous San Antonio tenure.

The Spurs can’t be viable here until we seriously upgrade local wages and very seriously diversify our local economy.

Spurs owner Peter Holt may have turned off some fans with recent statements tying Tim Duncan’s future to the team’s ability to move into a new arena.

But Holt and the Spurs still have a base of support among people who believe the team shouldn’t be forced into a position where it would have to consider leaving town - especially when it appears to be on the verge of putting together a contender.

“Fans in this city are kind of hardheaded,” said John Allen, service manager at Champions restaurant in Rivercenter mall. “The owner says, ‘Either build (the arena) or we’re not going to re-sign (Duncan).’ I don’t think they’re going to like that.”

Holt stirred the arena discussion Tuesday when he announced results of a team-sponsored poll.

Citizens rated the Spurs highly in popularity but opposed the use of tax money to build an arena. Because of the lack of support, Holt called off efforts to seek a referendum.

In making the announcement, Holt also warned that if an arena is not built, then Duncan’s career with the Spurs likely would last only three years - the length of his league-mandated rookie contract.

After Duncan’s original pact expires, Holt projected the 6-foot-11 center would be too expensive to keep under contract without added revenues that would be generated by the new facility.

“We could stay in the Alamodome … but I can guarantee you we won’t be re-signing Tim Duncan, OK. If you want to call that a threat, please do,” Holt said Tuesday.

A caller to the San Antonio Express-News was dismayed at the comment, noting that “it sounds like we’re being blackmailed.”

The caller, who identified himself only as retired military, said he would like to see details to support Holt’s viewpoints.

“I’d like to see the numbers,” he said. “On one side of the page, the revenues at (the Alamodome); on the other side, revenues from the new arena.”

Other Champions employees expect the Spurs to rebound from last year’s disaster, race to a winning season and turn public opinion in their favor.

“After this year, they’re going to be changing a lot of minds,” Shane Walker said. “With Tim Duncan in the lineup, I think they’re going to be rocking.”

Mike De Luna said he couldn’t envision the city without the Spurs, who moved from Dallas to San Antonio in 1972 as a member of the American Basketball Association. They joined the NBA in 1976.

“The Spurs have been here too long for them to get up and leave,” De Luna said. “They’re a tradition … If the Spurs do really well, the fans might be more interested (in the arena situation). I think they have to have a good season.”

David Harmon, store manager at Footaction USA in Rivercenter mall, was disappointed to hear the negative arena backlash again on a local radio talk show Wednesday morning.

“People are thinking small- minded,” Harmon said. "On the radio, they said the state (already) has a lot of their money. They mentioned … the Alamodome and how they said they’d bring in the NFL, and it didn’t happen. That’s hurt the Spurs.

“Personally, I feel they (taxpayers) should give them the arena. In the long run, it would be more money for San Antonio.”

Harmon agrees with Holt, that the team won’t be able to pay Duncan in three years if they remain at the dome.

“I believe it,” he said. “Tim will be a high-dollar player. If they can’t up his pay, he may not stay.”

Spurs note: Holt is excited about the rehabilitation of center David Robinson, who missed most of last season with foot and back injuries.

“He’s improved his flexibility,” Holt said. “He has made dramatic improvement. I’ve been told his confidence is up, and that’s what I like to hear.”

Faced with poll results that indicate a taxpayer-funded new arena faces huge odds, the San Antonio Spurs have decided not to put the issue before voters in January - as the team hoped to do.

The poll showed opposition or strong opposition by a majority of voters to any of a variety of proposals to fund a new arena: increases in either the sales, hotel-motel or rental car taxes.

While the Spurs rank high with those polled - 66 percent had a favorable view of team and 75 percent rated the team’s community involvement as excellent or good - opposition to each of the taxing proposals was firm.

Sixty-eight percent were opposed and 54 percent strongly opposed to a half-cent boost in the sales tax, and 61 percent were opposed and 43 percent strongly opposed to any taxpayer-funded new arena.

The Spurs are a vital part of this community and more vital to the city’s image in the nation and world. Losing the Spurs would tell people everywhere that San Antonio can’t play in the big leagues, literally and figuratively.

But it is clear that building a new multipurpose arena is not high among the priorities of local voters and taxpayers.

Spurs Chairman Peter Holt, while vowing not to offer the team to the highest out-of- town bidder, said the team can’t make the kind of money in the Alamodome it needs to remain competitive with the NBA’s big-market teams. And he threw the ball back into the taxpayers’ court, saying:

“When, and if, the community comes up with a plan, the Spurs would certainly like to be part of it. However, it is up to the community and its leadership to develop this plan.”

Taxpayers have made their priorities clear. Holt and the Spurs must rethink theirs.

The most likely alternative, of course, is a privately funded arena.

The Spurs should find partners and offer that alternative.

If the team’s owners agreed to invest some of their money in an arena proposal, taxpayers probably would not begrudge the city or county providing land. But this city has many needs, not the least a major investment in the infrastructure of schools.

After building a domed stadium, taxpayers can be excused for saying no so soon to a request for a new arena.

Peter Holt didn’t hold a gun to anyone’s head. If anything, he pointed it farther down, at his own feet.

A lot of people are appreciative. The last thing anyone wanted to hear was an ultimatum from another bullying sports owner.

But if the history of sports arenas proves anything, it’s that bullying goes a long way. Drayton McLane, for example, threatened Houston with a few deadlines until he got his Astros what they needed.

So unless the Spurs undercut Michael Jordan for the title and thus prove worthy of their very own rental-car tax, don’t be surprised if Holt eventually re- evaluates and re-aims. Don’t be surprised if he says: “If something tangible isn’t on the table by the summer of 1999, we will have no choice but to look elsewhere.”

Sadly, it’s the truth. Politically, it might be the only maneuver that works.

Holt avoided all such confrontations when he spent Tuesday posturing. Why else do you call a news conference to announce you aren’t talking about an arena you never talked much about anyway?

The polling figures released by the Spurs weren’t shocking; more were against the construction of the dome at a similar stage. But by pulling back, Holt hoped to redefine the debate. If the Spurs can become just part of an arena partnership - if the rodeo and music industry come to the front - then perhaps attitudes change.

Holt’s day of spin wasn’t perfect. Asked a few questions after his statement, he offered a less-than- slick example. “We could stay in the Alamodome … but I can guarantee you we won’t be re- signing Tim Duncan, OK. If you want to call that a threat, please do.”

That’s news to Duncan’s agent. As for Duncan himself: His pro career spans a full week in Utah, yet he’s already the franchise- breaker. He no doubt appreciates that.

Besides, if you are going to threaten, think up something better than not re-signing a kid already under contract. So much for redefining the debate.

Duncan would be flattered to know he would have helped in a referendum vote. But once he starts playing, he also confuses the issue. With him, the dome will fill, and everything will seem fine. At times, when the Spurs open up the dome and draw 35,000, some will wonder if this isn’t a better venue.

The dome isn’t, of course. The Spurs will compete in this industry only with a 20,000-seat arena made for basketball, one with luxury boxes, one with intimacy. But during a season of sellouts, will either the private sector or public officials feel the urgency to talk about a new arena?

More than likely, this stays quiet until Holt speaks up again - until Holt carries his threat to its conclusion. If the Spurs can’t re- sign Duncan, the franchise loses a star player and almost all credibility. What are the Spurs playing for then?stadium.

McLane would have said that already. So would have Paul Allen; his Microsoft fortune didn’t stop him from threatening Seattle into helping him with a new football stadium.

Holt? He wasn’t a bully this week. But how long can he not be?

Duncan not dominating, but not fooling anybody

SALT LAKE CITY - This probably won’t go down as the Tim Duncan Rocky Mountain Revue.

The Spurs’ coveted rookie hasn’t dominated, averaging 12.7 points, 3.3 blocks, 9 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the Spurs/Sixers entry, which has lost two of three games.

It may be difficult to put a finger on Duncan’s game. He’s a very methodical player, giving the impression of less than burning interest.

So, you think maybe other teams are relieved to figure now that Duncan won’t be the man to help put the Spurs over the top?

Think again.

“He’s a can’t-miss guy because he’s an unselfish player who passes, rebounds and can score,” Portland coach Mike Dunleavey said.

“He reads defenses real well and he has a nice touch as a blocker. Sure, there are some areas where he might be a little too passive, but he does step up for you when the time comes.”

Duncan impresses coaches here for the Revue with his court vision, his all- around skills, his size, his thinking approach. His deft passing, highlighted by a few nifty throws in the Tuesday night game against the Suns, caused a few gasps of delight.

The Wake Forest star bounced a behind-the-backer through lane traffic to a slicing Anthony Parker for a score. He fired a no-look bullet inside for a Ruben Garces dunk.

“I’m impressed,” Seattle mentor George Karl said. “He has a good sense of the game at both ends of the floor. Right now, he has to learn how to get his shots. He won’t be the first option, probably the third or fourth (after David Robinson and Sean Elliott), so he’ll have to be smart as how to get to the ball.”

How about that passive tag?

“Centers don’t have the ball that much. They don’t start off the action,” Karl said. "He does have to learn how to get the ball.

“All rookies aren’t aware just how physical, tense and proud our game is,” Karl added. “It is more tense and physical than the college game. So it will be interesting to see how he meets that challenge. It will be interesting to see how he meets the challenge when other guys go at him, which they will.”

Chicago assistant coach Tex Winter gives short shrift to the passive notion and suggests that Duncan may surpass Robinson in some skill areas.

“Tim’s going to make a fine professional player. He’s very quick and active,” Winter says. "He gives that impression (passive) because he plays easily. It will just take him a little time to pick up the pace.

“I think both he and David will be able to play the four and five spots,” Winter said. “He’s no David at this point but he has the talents to surpass David in some areas - he is a very good ballhandler and he has an outside shot.”

Seattle assistant coach Terry Stotts smiled and thanked the NBA that the Sonics won’t have to play more than four games against San Antonio.

“He has a lot of NBA skills,” said Stotts, who coached the Sonics here. “He’s still learning the game and it’s a credit that he came to the Revue. I think back to the days when the rookies wouldn’t attend anything in the summer, sometimes missing training camp because of contract problems. That hurt them a lot.”

Denver coach Bill Hanzlik gave it a succinct summing-up: "I wish we had him.

“He’s going to be a great player,” Hanzlik continued. "You put him with David and the Spurs will have one of the lowest opponents’ field goal percentage in the league next year. Defense wins a lot of games.

“He’s going to face the usual rookie problems. How will he handle playing 82 instead of about 35 games? It’s so demanding. The NBA’s offense comes at you in so many different ways. But he looks like he’s assessing things out there, he’s a smart player.”

Passive?

“If you have to say passive, I’d say passive-aggressive,” Hanzlik said. “He is very focused out there.”

To a man, the coaches marveled at Duncan’s good fortune in going to San Antonio, where the pressure will be lessened by the presence of Robinson.

“Expectations are still going to be there for him, and he has to learn what he can and cannot do,” Stotts said. “But it really makes the transition easier when you go to a team that already has a top talent, like Magic Johnson going to play with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.”

Notes: General manager and coach Gregg Popovich flew to New York City Tuesday. He reportedly was there to answer a grievance filed by forward Charles Smith.

Smith is contesting not being paid for the Spurs’ March 21 game in Sacramento. Smith left the team after the March 20 game in Phoenix and did not join the team until the March 23 game in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

Popovich was expected to return here late Wednesday.

- Monty Williams, sidelined by a sore foot Tuesday night, will play against Portland at 5 p.m. today. He will play the first half of the 8 p.m. Friday game against Utah and then leave for San Antonio.

“I had been thinking about leaving (because of the sore foot) but Pop and I talked and I decided to stay and play one half Friday,” Williams said. "I have a flight that night because I have commitments Saturday.

“I’ll be able to rest the foot when I get home,” he said. “It is a little awkward to walk when one foot is sore.”

- Trainer John Andersen said Duncan was nursing “a mild virus.” Duncan said he was feeling poorly before the Tuesday night game.

“I’m OK,” he said after the Wednesday morning practice. “I’ll be playing Thursday.”

Duncan ignites Spurs by Blazers

SALT LAKE CITY - Portland coach Mike Dunleavy had said only Wednesday that Tim Duncan will step up for a team when the time comes.

The time came in the fourth quarter Thursday night when the Spurs/Sixers had to hold off a suddenly tenacious, trapping Portland defense.

Duncan answered with six points, three steals, five rebounds and two blocked shots in the final quarter to lead the Spurs/Sixers to its second victory, 87-79, in the Rocky Mountain Revue.

It was Duncan’s best out ing thus far.

“I just decided to focus on defense and getting to the glass,” said the NBA’s top draft pick. “I haven’t really been able to get into sync on offense.”

But he felt good enough to want more.

“Things are coming around for me now,” he said. "I thought I was ready to play when I got here, but I wasn’t. I wish there were a couple more games to play here.

“Yeah, this was my best game so far.”

He’s got one more, at 7 tonight against the Jazz.

Up until Duncan took over, the Blazers’ 6-foot-11 pair of Kelvin Cato and Jermaine O’Neal had been enjoying the game, somewhat at Duncan’s expense. Cato had previously said that he will shoot for Rookie of the Year honors this season.

Cato started fast with three blocks in the first half, including one on Duncan’s first shot. And O’Neal had his time against the former Wake Forest star, scoring 18 points through three quarters.

Still, the Spurs/Sixers led most of the way, by as many as 11 points, until the Blazers pulled even at 76 midway through the final quarter.

Then Duncan took over. He swept in for a layup and completed the three-point play to give the Spurs/Sixers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. He made it 85-77 when he dunked off a inbound looping pass from Cory Alexander.

He blocked a Marcus Brown shot at the other end, grabbed the loose ball and fed it up for another Spurs/Sixers score and an 87-77 advantage.

Cato, worried by Duncan’s defense, scored no points in the final quarter, and his best try was blocked by Duncan. O’Neal managed but five points in the final quarter.

“I think I would have been the No. 1 pick this year if I had gone to college for one year,” said O’Neal, who joined Portland straight out of high school last season. “But I’m not taking anything away from Tim - he’s a great athlete.”

Noted Cato, taken No. 15 by Portland out of Iowa State: “He showed me some things but I think I showed him some things, too. He went 14 picks ahead of me, and they say I’m going to be a good player so I guess he must be a good player. We’ll see each other again in San Antonio.”

“Cato came into the game with a purpose. He wanted to prove something,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Tim doesn’t go out there trying to prove anything. He let himself get into the game, got his blood flowing and took over at the end.”

Duncan boxed out both Cato and 7-3 Keith Closs in the final quarter, grabbing open rebounds and digging out the tough ones in heavy traffic.

Arena poll devastation is total

Tuesday’s train wreck that sent the Spurs plunging off the tracks en route to a new arena was far worse than most of us imagined.

The devastation appears total.

On Tuesday, Spurs Chairman Peter Holt released summaries of responses to several of the questions that were asked in a phone survey last month of 773 registered voters.

Citizens firmly (61 percent) opposed using taxes for an arena.

Percentages changed only slightly using various local taxing options under a new state law.

But Holt saw the numbing negative responses to all 45 questions in the poll and accurately dubbed the problem a “disconnect” with the public.

The Spurs won a favorable overall nod from 66 percent of those polled and 75 percent saw the team’s community role as “good” to “excellent.”

But little else was positive.

Not detailed on Tuesday was that resistance to public funding was so intense not even scenarios with the Spurs paying a share of arena costs made any difference.

One might expect anger over public funding to ease as Spurs owners offer to increase their own investment in the project.

When asked about that Thursday, Spurs officials confirmed that the opposition numbers simply didn’t budge in responses to any of several proposed levels of Spurs’ investment in the new arena.

The blunt message: All private arena money or nothing.

Then there’s this: A privately owned arena would pay $580,000 a year in city property taxes and $1.5 million in school taxes if in the San Antonio School District. A public arena would pay no taxes.

The “disconnect” is hardly of Holt’s making, but he suggests someone else - a citizens’ group, the city, county or a local coalition - toss the arena ball back in play.

It seems people got fed up with the semiannual talk that the Spurs would be sold and moved out of town and with the fight over the Alamodome and making the Spurs play in a football stadium the team hates. Many people don’t believe claims a new arena with half the capacity of the Alamodome court will increase Spurs’ revenues.

Well, of 34 suites in the Spurs end of the dome, 30 are sold at about $80,000 a year. A new arena could have 70 suites at $100,000 each - or $4.6 million more per year.

Are there really 70 local firms and individuals willing to pay $100,000 a year for a Spurs suite?

A brilliant colleague who assessed the Spurs’ economic prospects prior to the recent poll said: “We can not build an arena and the Spurs will leave town now, or we can build an arena and the Spurs will leave town later.”

But don’t the Spurs boost the city’s “big-time” image? How much is that national TV and newspaper exposure really worth?

The city spends millions on advertising every year. Why not just pencil-in $7 million in the city budget as annual direct funding for the city’s largest portable ad and forget a new $120 million arena?

As noted here before, the only way to guarantee the Spurs won’t leave is if the city itself buys the majority ownership of the team.

Maybe Holt & Friends should sell the Spurs to another town, find more corporate and individual partners, add a chunk of city money and solicit massive public donations and then go after the Dallas Cowboys franchise.

Isn’t that what most sports fans in San Antonio really want?

And we’ve already got a paid-for, only slightly used domed stadium the 'boys can play in. Add $120 million or so for a jazzy finish-out with all seating limited to luxury suites or club-style boxes.

SALT LAKE CITY - Tim Duncan learned what most San Antonians already know - the Delta Center is just not a friendly place for the Spurs.

The Utah Jazz crushed the Spurs/Philadelphia 76ers team 85-59 Friday night in the Rocky Mountain Revue. The battering left the Spurs with a 2-3 record in the Revue.

Duncan’s summer-school session will continue today, when he travels to Aspen, Colo. He will spend the next four or five days working one-on-one against Spurs centers David Robinson and Will Perdue.

The rest of the Spurs and Sixers departed for homes and vacation spots.

Despite the lopsided score Friday, both Duncan and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich pronounced the stay here a resounding success.

“Our mission was accomplished big time, for all three guys,” said Popovich of Duncan, forward Monty Williams and guard Cory Alexander. "We couldn’t have accomplished more. All three improved in every area we wanted.

“It was a great education for Tim and for me. I know a great deal more about Tim, now. I won’t have to wait for training camp to discover it.”

In particular?

“Tim is the best passing big man since Bill Walton,” Popovich said. “He gets back on defense better than any other big man.”

Still, Duncan appeared to have some difficulties handling Utah center Greg Ostertag at both ends of the floor.

“I don’t think he had any trouble at all tonight,” Popovich said. “He’s learning how to position himself. He showed he has the composure of a 10-year veteran.”

Duncan certainly doesn’t panic out there, although he did show moments of exasperation, demonstrated by peering down at the floor and shaking his head.

He had some reason.

Ostertag opened the game trying to dunk in Duncan’s face but rammed it off the back rim. Ostertag, a two-year veteran, blocked Duncan’s first shot in the second half and managed to swat away a couple more through the course of the game.

He opened offensive sequences out on the perimeter, keeping Duncan away from the lane and allowing Jazz drivers open trips to the bucket.

Duncan fouled out at the 2:52 mark of the fourth quarter, picking up his sixth foul trying to foil Ostertag. He had picked up his fourth and fifth also while defending Ostertag.

Ostertag finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Duncan had 14 points and grabbed eight boards. Ostertag had five blocks, Duncan two.

Duncan had his moments.

He dunked and earned appreciative exclamations from the Delta Center crowd. He poked in a few nice passes. He had a few intimidations and a sensational block of a driving Nate Green.

“I felt pretty good out there,” said Duncan, who played in his fifth game in six nights.

“Yes, this week was a success for me,” he said. “It was no one thing, I just started getting acclimated to how they play. Every player is a little different. The play is more physical, but the most important thing is that there is a lot of talent on the floor.”

Duncan now will face the talents of Robinson and Perdue.

“I’ll learn whatever they want to teach me,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Alexander also felt good about his time here.

“It was mostly the intangible of leadership that they were looking for from me,” said Alexander, a two-year player. "They already knew that I could score, that I could defend.

“They wanted me to take charge, and I believe I did that.”

Alexander had his problems with the aggressive Jazz defenders. He had nine points on 4 of 12 shooting and just four assists.

Williams played only the first half, as scheduled, and then flew home because of a prior commitment.

After a week that certainly won’t be included in the highlight tape of Peter Holt’s life, the chairman of the Spurs reached a conclusion: The people of San Antonio don’t believe the Spurs. While Holt won’t admit that to you and me, he’s admitted it to himself.

Having raised the white flag of surrender Tuesday with regard to the Spurs pushing for a referendum on a new arena, Holt noted his franchise couldn’t be the vanguard for such a project.

Staring at polling numbers so one-sided they conjured up memories of the Dukakis and Mondale presidential races against Ronald Reagan, Holt stepped aside.

No matter how many times Holt and others in his corner tried, the people of San Antonio talked about “the new arena for the Spurs.”

So, why didn’t people believe Spurs officials when they talked about it being an “arena for the community?”

Perhaps they remembered previous Spurs ownership grabbing the concessions contract from the Alamodome, which was billed as a “multipurpose convention facility for the community.”

But I don’t want to further beat on Holt, a nice man who I wish had a chance to save this team for S.A.

No, this is to address what Holt learned about people not believing the Spurs.

Nowhere is that more evident than in the case of David Robinson, who today is tucked away in Aspen, Colo., playing hoops with Will Perdue and Tim Duncan.

And we’ll be told by GM/Coach Gregg Popovich that Robinson has never looked better. We’ll learn that “David is 90 percent.”

If Robinson’s back is that missing 10 percent, what good is the 90 percent?

If you’ve read or listened to me since Robinson’s back and foot injuries last season, you know I’m skeptical about announcements concerning his rehabilitation.

Certainly, the Spurs give you and me every reason to be skeptical and, sadly, cynical at times.

Remember last October, when we were told Robinson wasn’t going to miss a regular-season game? He missed the first 18.

Numerous sources have told me Robinson may not be able to play this season.

One Spurs player told me Robinson had trouble standing for extended periods of time as late as April. Robinson injured his back last summer before the Olympics and hurt his foot Dec. 23.

Remember, the Spurs were suggesting until late in the season that Robinson might return if the team qualified for the playoffs.

That was false.

Ditto when they said Sean Elliott and Chuck Person might return before season’s end.

Here’s what I suspect about Robinson from piecing tidbits together: His back still hurts him a great deal when he has to bend down to grab low passes.

Note to Spurs point guard Avery Johnson: Keep 'em high.

Thus, Robinson needs to play straight up and down, something that isn’t in the NBA handbook.

My sources don’t get their paychecks from the Spurs.

Understand, too, this isn’t to knock David Schmidt, the team physican. Popovich won’t allow him to speak to the media about Robinson - or anyone, for that matter.

So here’s my suggestion:

Let’s have Robinson, Duncan and Perdue in the Incarnate Word gym on Tuesday morning.

The public is invited.

If Robinson is truly OK, why not let everyone see?

Understand, now, David Robinson is never going to be the same player again. Period.

Robinson, a wonderfully gifted man in many areas, has never had to work hard in basketball. His God-given quickness and speed have made the game easy for him.

But with his bad back and his age - he turns 32 on Wednesday - basketball will be nothing but hard work for him from now on.

Should Popovich refuse to allow Robinson to be seen working out - and if I’m betting lunch, he will - we’ll be right in saying, “It’s all a charade.”

And it will further help Holt to understand why the people don’t believe the Spurs.

Boston may be too cold for Tim Duncan, but San Antonio is heating up for the No. 1 pick in the 1997 NBA draft.

Suddenly forgotten by the powers that be is the notion Duncan will prosper more quickly in the Alamo City because of the presence of David Robinson and the resulting lack of pressure.

Spurs owner Peter Holt branded Duncan last week when he told fans the team couldn’t afford him unless they coughed up the tax money to build a new arena.

Nice way to let Duncan avoid the limelight by playing in the shadows of his teammates.

Then Coach Gregg Popovich overflowed after Duncan’s average performance against Utah. “He’s the greatest passing big man since Bill Walton,” Pop gushed.

Hello, Arvydas Sabonis.

“He gets back on defense better than any other big man,” Popovich exulted.

Hello, David.

Good luck, Tim Duncan. You’re a player, but you might want to caution your employers.

Who’s talking? It was more than a little curious watching the refs during the Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City.

There’d be one, nodding “yes” to nobody in particular. There’d be another, standing alone, looking at no one, giving a thumb’s-up sign or shaking his head, mouthing “no.”

And there was Darell Garretson, supervisor of the league’s refs, up in the stands, sitting by himself, his lips motoring along in conversation.

Solution: The refs had earphones attached to receivers bulging in their back pockets, listening to Garretson’s commentaries on their actions.

“We’ve been doing this for a couple of years,” Garretson said. “It’s a great instruction tool. No, I don’t distract the refs. I never talk to one if he’s facing a one-on-one situation.”

Nevertheless, league MVP Karl Malone, sitting at courtside, grew increasingly exasperated at all the whistle-blowing during one game.

“Hey, Dee, tell your daddy (Garretson) we need to get out of here and stop calling all those fouls,” Malone shouted at female ref Dee Kantner while catching the Spurs/Sixers’ action. “We came to see Tim Duncan, not these guys,” he added, after watching Duncan stride to the bench with three fouls.

Speaking of Karl: Denver coach Bill Hanzlik and general manager Alan Bristow walked over to a Salt Lake City health club early Sunday morning. There they spotted Malone going through his weight routine.

The duo, filled with motivational fire, scurried to their hotel and hauled rookies Tony Battie, Danny Fortson, Eric Washington and Bobby Jackson out of their sacks and to the center at about 8:30 a.m.

“That is what it takes to be great,” Bristow solemnly pronounced, pointing to Malone. Malone took a break and talked to the rookies for 15 minutes.

Said Fortson, “That was a great experience. It’s amazing what he does. It was worth the early wake- up call to see that.”

Growing up: The majority of the teams in the Revue were coached by assistants - with their bosses either in the stands observing or taking it easy elsewhere.

Most were quite a hoot - barking drill sergeants orchestrating every play, modifying every defensive and offensive stance, objecting to every call and non-call.

The officials responded with rolling eyes and bemused headshakes, when they weren’t listening to Garretson. Seattle assistant Terry Stotts came close to getting thrown out for harassing the refs.

“I’m not getting on you,” Stotts said to an official, “it just seems that way.” Sure did.

Only one sideliner was tossed - rookie head coach Hanzlik, when he told an official he needed some help on the court.
