Duncan receives his just reward
Spurs forward Tim Duncan, dressed in a loose-fitting, beige T-shirt and shorts, stepped to the podium at a Monday afternoon news conference and asked a sheepish question to no one in particular.
“Do I give a speech or something?”
A bank of minicams whirred. The media sat with notepads and tape recorders poised, ready to chronicle perhaps the least-surprising development in the team’s history.
Duncan, a 22-year-old native of the U.S. Virgin Islands, had just been presented with the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy as the NBA Rookie of the Year. He gathered his thoughts and offered a short tribute to the people who helped him achieve one of his goals.
“I’d like to thank my teammates and coaching staff and everyone who kept me sane this year,” Duncan said.
Duncan drove Spurs fans crazy with delight as he progressed through the regular season, carrying the team to 56 victories and seemingly raising the level of his performances each day.
“I was fortunate because I didn’t have to come in and save the team,” he said. “There were great players who were already here. All I had to do was fit in and learn my way.”
By April, Duncan had learned to domi- nate. He was being mentioned by several league observers as a most valuable player candidate and a serious contender for All- NBA first- team recognition.
Duncan said he hoped he could win the MVP trophy at some point in his career.
“I think everyone has that dream,” he said. “I’d hope to be able to improve and succeed to that point, definitely.”
The rookie of the year voting was no contest. Duncan received 113 out of a possible 116 votes (97.4 percent) from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.
New Jersey Nets forward Keith Van Horn finished second with three votes. Duncan’s victory was the biggest landslide since Shaquille O’Neal received 98 percent in 1992-93.
“Keith had a great year,” Duncan said. “He played through a lot of injuries. I think maybe I just had a more consistent year. It might have been different if he had been healthy.”
Duncan, the first selection in the NBA draft last summer, averaged 21.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.51 blocked shots during the regular season. He shot 54.9 percent from the field in 39.1 minutes.
Coming into the league as the top pick, Duncan wanted to prove his worth.
“This was a long time coming,” he said. “It was definitely a goal of mine, something I wanted to achieve.”
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he never had to deal with any Duncan-related problems involving team chemistry. Popovich singled out center David Robinson, a former rookie of the year and MVP, as a player instrumental in helping Duncan’s talents develop and blossom.
“They all rooted for him,” Popovich said. “They wanted him to come on quickly, particularly David. That’s Dave’s personality. He wanted him to succeed.”
By April, Duncan had become the focal point of the Spurs’ offensive attack. In nine games during the last month of the regular season, the 6-foot-11 forward averaged 27 points, 12 rebounds and 2.56 blocks.
“He’s the best rookie I’ve ever seen,” Seattle coach George Karl said recently. “I’m thinking back and, yes, I would say he’s the best. … He’s a quiet assassin … skilled in all aspects of the game.”
Phoenix Suns veteran John “Hot Rod” Williams said Duncan should be a first- team All-NBA selection, in his estimation.
“I’ve been in the league 13 years, and I haven’t seen nobody else play on the block like he does,” Williams said. “He plays on the left block, the right block, he can drive the ball and use his left hand, right hand. He shoots the jump shot, passes the ball - everything.”
Last summer, Duncan worked extensively on his left-handed hook shot.
“In my last year in college, my coach (Wake Forest’s Dave Odom) really got on me,” Duncan said. "He said, ‘You can’t get to the next level until you learn how to use that (left hand).’ So I worked on it the whole summer to get to the point where I could use it in the games.
“It has (helped). Used to be, people played you to one side and made me try to prove it. Now, they have to play me a little more square. That’s been a big help to me.”
Popovich predicted that Duncan would add more tricks to his arsenal in the near future.
'He’ll improve in a lot of ways," Popovich said. "Because he’s a guy like Magic Johnson, who wants to add to his game. Avery Johnson is another guy. Avery is a guy whose added to his game every summer. I think Tim will do the same thing.
“Nobody thought Magic would be able to shoot a three-point shot. Tim’s got the same sort of competitive spirit. He wants to be the best.”
