Too bad Spurs don’t play in the East
If the Spurs march onward to claim home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, their fans can send thank you notes to teams in the Eastern Conference.
The Spurs completed a 23-7 record against the East this season when they plundered the Miami Heat 103-89 Thursday night at the Alamodome.
It’s an interesting contrast to their 28-16 record against teams from the West going into Saturday night’s home game against the Golden State Warriors.
Unfortunately for the Spurs, they can’t apply for entry into the East’s playoff bracket.
They are stuck in the West, where they most likely will meet the Phoenix Suns in the first round. The Suns won the season series against the Spurs 3-1.
Going into the last seven games of the regular season, the Spurs are a combined 9-14 against teams that have qualified for the West’s postseason party.
Conversely, they finished 14-6 against the top 10 teams in the East. They swept to 2-0 series victories against Miami, Indiana, Cleveland, New York and Orlando.
“Our style is suited to the East,” Spurs center David Robinson said. “We like to get into a half-court game and grind it out.”
Going into the Golden State game, the Spurs ranked in the bottom 10 in the NBA in scoring, averaging just less than 93 points a game. They pulled off a 50-plus win season with one of the league’s best defenses, holding teams to a fraction less than 89 points.
It’s a style that hasn’t always worked out against the Seattle SuperSonics, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers or Suns - all of them well-balanced, high-scoring teams from the West. Against those four teams, the Spurs are a combined 2-10.
“In the West, teams isolate a lot and play one-on-one. For instance, Phoenix shoots it so well, they can beat you like that,” Robinson said. “In the East, if you shut teams down inside, you’ve got a good chance to win.”
Fans have a right to feel uneasy with questions about why their team is so much better against the East because it raises the issue of how far the ball club can expect to go in the West.
Rookie Tim Duncan initially shrugged and said he had no idea why the East teams have been such easy prey, while the West has been such a jungle for the Spurs.
Naturally, he was being coy.
“I do know there are a lot better teams in the West,” Duncan said.
- Fore! If the Spurs win the home- court edge in a first-round series against Phoenix, their battle cry going into the playoffs could very well be, “Fore!”
Knicks guard John Starks and forward Larry Johnson took advantage of beautiful weather in New York by playing a round of golf in between their morning shootaround and their evening game Tuesday against the Spurs.
Not surprisingly, Starks and Johnson aided the Spurs’ cause. Starks went scoreless in 30 minutes. Johnson produced four points and three rebounds. The Knicks triple-bogeyed the basketball game, falling 95-78.
- Duncan’s decision: Duncan said he will accept an invitation to play in this summer’s FIBA World Championships in Greece if he gets it. As predicted here last fall, Duncan is a front-runner to receive one of the final two roster spots.
- Hold the MVP talk: Duncan is enjoying one of the best rookie seasons of any player this decade. But it may be a stretch to say he deserves the league’s Most Valuable Player trophy, as some have suggested.
Michael Jordan (Bulls), Karl Malone (Jazz), and Gary Payton and Vin Baker (SuperSonics) should all be considered the front- runners because they are the best players on the teams with the best records in the league.
As a matter of fact, if the Bulls finish with the best record, there should be no argument from anyone that Jordan deserves it one more time.
- A false alarm: A San Antonio Police Department official confirmed Thursday night that the “suspicious device” found attached to a stairwell door on the floor level of the Alamodome was not an explosive.
Capt. Steve Baum said officials found “a wad of masking tape,” with a watch face attached to it. “It turned out to be nothing,” Baum said.
An usher initially found the device, which was fastened to the door about 100 feet from the Spurs’ dressing room. The discovery came about 30 minutes after the Spurs defeated the Heat.
Security immediately cleared the area of players, media and dome personnel.
In the wake of the scare, one Spurs player said beefed-up security was needed. But Robinson said he didn’t think heightened security was necessary unless officials learn of an organized plot to harm people at the games.
