Many in NBA experienced Final Four glory
The high school kids who skirted college and zipped straight into the NBA are feeling a little bit out of it right now.
March Madness has left them gazing at their teammates, huddled and rooting for their alma maters or against rival institutions.
Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett, for one, has neither alma mater nor rival, and this time of year he tends to wish he had attended college.
“Just for the experience itself, just to see what it would be like,” Garnett said. "I think I watch it with the same intensity and interest I would if I’d been in college.
“I guess the NBA Finals will have to be my national championship.”
But, to date at least, the kiddie corps is in the minority. Let’s take a look at some players who showed their early promise and were named to Final Four all- tournament teams.
Patrick Ewing was a member of the all-tournament team three times during the early 1980s and led Georgetown to the ultimate crown in '84, defeating Akeem Olajuwon and Houston 84-75.
Olajuwon, the centerpiece of Phi Slamma Jama, was a member of the all-tournament team twice, but he had to wait until he was in the NBA before winning a championship. Houston also lost in the '83 NCAA championship game, 54-52 to North Carolina State.
Michael Jordan was all- tournament in '82, the same year he hit a jumper with 15 seconds left to lift North Carolina over Georgetown in the title game.
“Never Nervous” Pervis Ellison has labored through his injury- plagued NBA career, boasting just two solid years with Washington when he averaged 20 and 17.4 points through the '91-92 and '92-93 seasons. But he attained collegiate glory when he was named the tournament’s most outstanding player and guided Louisville over Duke 72-69 in the final game in '86.
Syracuse’s Derrick Coleman and Sherman Douglas and UNLV’s Armon Gilliam made the all- tournament team in '87. Indiana won the title that year, nipping Syracuse 74-73 in the final game. The Hoosiers already had dispatched UNLV 97-93 in the semifinals.
Gilliam had been touted as a possible No. 1 pick in that year’s NBA draft, but that honor went to David Robinson, snatched by the Spurs despite the fact that he still faced years of obligation to the Navy.
The Spurs’ Sean Elliott and Arizona teammate Steve Kerr made the team in '88 along with top player Danny Manning of Kansas and Stacey King of Oklahoma.
Kansas won everything that year, defeating Oklahoma 83-79 in the title game. Kerr took his jumper to the NBA, polished it and eventually wound up in Chicago where his 50 percent shooting contributed to two NBA titles.
Elliott hopes to get back in time to help guide the Spurs through the playoffs this season. Manning, too, is looking for a fruitful playoff run with the Suns. King has been the least productive of the group, but he still wears three NBA title rings, courtesy of Jordan.
Michigan’s Glen Rice and Duke’s Danny Ferry were members of the '89 select five. Rice enjoyed NCAA champion status and since has become one of the NBA’s most feared shooters. Ferry’s bubble burst shortly after he arrived in the big league.
The all-tourney teams were dominated by Duke guys during the early '90s, with Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill making the jump to the NBA. Duke won back-to-back titles in '91 and '92. The three players have yet to taste serious playoff success in the big time.
Georgia Tech’s Dennis Scott and UNLV’s Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon made the '90 all-tourney group, and Johnson and Augmon ran the Rebels to the title that year.
Scott’s jumper helped make the Orlando Magic an NBA title contender, Augmon has drifted about, and Johnson is trying to make his impact with the Ewing- less Knicks after making the Hornets a rousing bunch while playing alongside Alonzo Mourning.
The all-tourney teams of the late '90s were littered with players who made the leap to the NBA - Jalen Rose and Chris Webber (twice) from Michigan, George Lynch and Eric Montross from North Carolina, Corliss Williamson (twice) from Arkansas, Ed O’Bannon from UCLA, Bryant Reeves from Oklahoma State, Tony Delk and Ron Mercer (twice) from Kentucky, Marcus Camby from Massachusetts, John Wallace from Syracuse and Bobby Jackson from Minnesota.
Lynch, Montross, Williamson, O’Bannon, Delk and Mercer all were members of NCAA championship teams.
The list will expand after this June’s draft.
