NBA elbows Malone off court for one game
Malone suspension jumps to 4C sub all for metro “I’m disappointed all around.”
That’s what David Robinson had to say shortly before Friday’s tipoff between the Spurs and Seattle SuperSonics, but surprisingly, he wasn’t upset with the punishment handed down by the NBA on Utah forward Karl Malone.
Malone elbowed Robinson on Wednesday, which left the center with a concussion and a reinjured left knee.
The NBA suspended Malone for Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers and assessed him a $5,000 fine.
Robinson also wasn’t upset with the reaction of his teammates, who have been criticized by many for not coming to his defense.
So what was Robinson disappointed about?
Possibly missing the Spurs’ drive to the playoffs over the final four games of the regular season.
Robinson, who didn’t play against the Sonics, met with the media before the game to discuss his health and the aftermath of the elbow.
The reaction to Malone’s act - in San Antonio and around the country - has taken a life of its own the past two days.
Robinson did say Malone should be held accountable for his actions, but the fine and suspension were appropriate. He said he is looking forward to getting a shot at the Jazz in the playoffs and said Malone’s elbow, which knocked Robinson unconscious, came after play had been whistled dead by the officials.
“I don’t think (the suspension) should have been longer,” Robinson said. “I think it’s important to make a statement about what you do after the whistle blows. It doesn’t matter to me whether he got a suspension or fine. I think the league did something because it was something extra.”
Rod Thorn, NBA senior vice president for basketball operations, said in a release: “While I do not believe that Malone intentionally elbowed Robinson, players have a responsibility not to recklessly swing their elbows in a manner that could cause injury to another player.”
Tuesday in Oakland, Calif., against the Golden State Warriors, Malone kneed Donyell Marshall, breaking his rib.
“You have some control over that,” Robinson said of Malone’s physical play. “You can’t be sending people to the hospital.”
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich agreed that the NBA made a fair ruling.
“It’s what you’d expect,” Popovich said. “The league made an objective decision. They did what was necessary.”
Sentiment from many Spurs fans centered on players not coming to Robinson’s aid or retaliating against Malone. Robinson, however, said the team would be better served to get back at Utah much like Chicago did to the Detroit Pistons in the years leading up to the Bulls’ initial championship.
“I don’t think retaliation in a similar matter is right,” Robinson said. “If you want to do something, do what the Bulls did to Detroit: beat them. Let’s meet (Utah) in the second round of the playoffs and beat them on the court.”
The Spurs are fighting Phoenix for home-court advantage in the first round, which starts in less than two weeks. Utah locked up first place in the Midwest Division on Wednesday.
Popovich also said his players acted correctly, despite protests from fans.
“It’s a foolish sentiment and doesn’t make any sense,” he said. “Nobody saw what happened because it was so quick. I applaud the guys for playing their asses off and playing with class.”
Robinson didn’t practice Friday, but he did rehab work on his ailing left knee. Robinson suffered a sprained knee capsule after his knee buckled during his unconscious fall Wednesday.
Robinson finally saw a replay of the blow, which he couldn’t remember, Thursday.
“I got hit pretty flush,” he said. “The combination of me being in the wrong spot and him throwing a big elbow is not good.”
Popovich said Robinson’s status for Monday’s home game with the Los Angeles Lakers and the rest of the regular season is “game to game.”
Robinson said he hoped to play Monday. The Lakers have beaten San Antonio in three previous meetings this year.
Several former Spurs, at Friday’s game as part of a 25th anniversary halftime ceremony, said an action such as Malone’s wouldn’t go unattended to in the old days.
“Back in our day, there would have been a payback,” former Bruise Brother Mark Olberding said. “Somewhere down the road, there would have been payback.”
