(Those Who Love the Game)的书的人来说,这并不容易。

Note from Doc: How to remedy a little sickness
The Spurs keep saying they’ve found their new Doc Rivers in Vernon Maxwell. By every right, the old Doc Rivers could sue for slander. When told that, Rivers laughed. But then he said the Spurs are right.
Vern is a lot like him on the court. Then there is this from Rivers: Maxwell provides a lot of qualities - some physical, some mental - the Spurs have long needed.
Get used to the messenger. Next month Rivers begins his new career, this one as an announcer for TNT. Everyone who has ever talked to Rivers knows he’s made for the job.
Still, the decision wasn’t easy. He says a contender called this summer wondering if he might change his mind. And his reaction surprised even himself. He told his attorney, without thinking it over, his hoops days were forever over.
His spine isn’t the lone problem. Rivers hired movers to lift furniture into his new Shavano Park home last week; yes, Rivers joins George Gervin, Larry Kenon, Terry Cummings and a lot of other ex-Spurs who have made San Antonio their home. But Rivers hired help because, well, he has the money.
Otherwise? “Sometimes the body feels all right,” he says. “Sometimes it doesn’t.”
Before the NBA Finals were over, he knew it was time to retire. And it wasn’t easy for a man who once wrote a book entitled “Those Who Love the Game.” He embraced every nuance, every detail, and that is something the Spurs are going to miss next season. Rivers was always so in tune with the concept of a team that, sometimes, what he said or did on the charter meant something.
Max? He might offer some locker-room insight about the legal complexities of herpes transmission (see his latest lawsuit). Otherwise, Vern is the kind of guy you want in a foxhole with you as long as the foxhole is extraordinarily large.
Rivers knows this about Maxwell. “The downside,” as Rivers put it simply, “is he can act the way he acts.”
But of all the Spurs, Rivers might have been the one who sympathized the most with Dennis Rodman. Rivers eventually sided with the team after Rodman isolated himself beyond repair. Still, Rivers admired Rodman’s passion.
Just as he does Maxwell’s. This is one place where Rivers sees similarities.
“Intensity is an amazing thing,” said Rivers. “Me, Vernon, Dennis, Michael Jordan - all four of us are different people with different backgrounds and different talent levels. But you could say we saw the game the same way. I don’t know what it is. Maybe, do you love the competition? Do you love the game?”
Remember his book title. Rivers puts this love above almost anything. So understand, even as he still catches himself using the word “we” when talking about the Spurs, he sees real flaws.
“Vernon is a gym rat,” said Rivers. “(Chuck) Person and Avery (Johnson), that’s about the only other ones. Now at least there’s another guy the coach knows wants to practice.”
When he talks about Maxwell’s upside, he sees more than that. “He can do so many things. He can get nasty on defense. He will take some ill-advised shots, but that can be controlled. At the same time, he’s not scared to take the big shot. That’s something else the Spurs need, quite honestly.”
Get ready for some candid TV. Rivers likes the Spurs, plans to live here - and he’s not afraid to already announce it as he sees it.
He went on. He says Maxwell also brings an unpredictable quality that Rodman had, something that unnerves opponents. That Maxwell probably has clauses in his contract that lessen the gamble. And that he always enjoyed playing against Maxwell because, again, he cared.
From there Rivers had more boxes to unpack. A new life awaits on the sidelines. And he’s ready.
