Robinson’s hernia won’t keep him from medal game
ATLANTA - Despite a hernia that will need surgery after the Olympics, Spurs center David Robinson said he is ready to win another gold medal. Robinson and the heavily-favored USA Dream Team will take on Yugoslavia at the Georgia Dome at 9 tonight in the championship matchup.
Both teams are undefeated at 7-0.
After Friday’s practice at Atlanta Metro College, Robinson said a lingering hernia is hindering his mobility.
“It’s not that bad, when you only play 12-14 minutes a game,” Robinson said. “I did it toward the middle or end of last season. Then I started lifting weights to get ready for this (Dream Team) camp. It’s not bad, but I’ll have to get it fixed.”
Gregg Popovich, the Spurs’ vice president for basketball operations, said the surgery would take place soon after Robinson returns home to San Antonio.
“It’s a pretty minor thing,” said Popovich, in Salt Lake City for a camp involving young NBA players. “The doctors said he could wait until after the Olympics to get it done.”
Popovich said it would take Robinson 2-4 weeks before he could start working out again after the operation.
Robinson, meanwhile, is showing few ill effects from the injury.
He is averaging 9 points, 3.5 rebounds and shooting 64.3 percent from the field in the Olympic tournament.
Sharing time with centers Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal, Robinson is averaging 11.2 minutes.
He enjoyed one of his best games of the tournament Thursday night, scoring 14 points and pulling down nine rebounds as the Dream Team thumped Australia, 101-73.
“I’ve done all right,” Robinson said, “but I’ve had this stomach thing (hernia) since I’ve been here.”
Robinson said the opposition in this tournament has been tougher, compared to 1992 when he played for the original Dream Team gold medalists.
“It’s a little different,” he said. “Teams are more relaxed and they’re playing us better.”
Yugoslavia features center Vlade Divac, recently traded by the Los Angeles Lakers to the Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat guard Predrag Danilovic and former Spurs forward Zarko Paspalj.
“This is what it’s all about,” Robinson said. “This is what we’ve worked for. I think we’re going to come out fired up.”
Robinson said he doesn’t think anybody on the Dream Team is motivated by the consequences of losing a game that everyone expects them to win.
“That’s not an option,” he said. “It’s not even a consideration. You don’t get to this level unless you have the focus and intensity to win.”
The Dream Team’s win over Australia boosted the USA’s record to 100-2 in the Olympics.
Robinson said his team’s defense made the difference against Andrew Gaze and the Aussies.
“That was the key,” he said. "You know when you bring guys off the bench and when you’ve got fresh legs, that’s what makes the difference.
“People talk about how we should just cream a lot of these teams, but they are not bad teams. They come out, get some good shots and hit the open shots.”
Robinson bemoaned the bombing of Centennial Olympic Village early last Saturday morning. A pipe bomb exploded, leading to two deaths and more than 100 injuries.
“It’s scary to know there are people out there crazy and stupid enough that they want to kill someone,” he said. "I called home right away and told (my wife) Valerie that I was all right.
“But I was down there the night before. That someone would plant a bomb is just crazy.”
Robinson said it didn’t bother him much when the Dream Team was evacuated from its hotel Tuesday morning in a bomb scare.
“It wasn’t like someone called and said they were going to blow up the Dream Team,” he said. “All it was, was they found a package that was suspicious.”
Robinson said he has enjoyed getting out to see some of other competitions.
“Opening Ceremonies was fun,” he said. “I’ve also seen gymnastics, tennis, diving. That gymnastics gala, it was awesome. For us, it’s hard to walk outside or down the street. But you get out to these events and it’s fun.”
