Spurs plan to keep Popovich as coach
Gregg Popovich is expected to be retained as head coach of the Spurs, a source close to the team said Tuesday. The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the announcement could come today after a meeting of team owners.
Team president Jack Diller declined to deny the report that Popovich will be back to resurrect the fortunes of the Spurs, who just completed the worst season (20-62) in franchise history Sunday.
Nobody on behalf of the Spurs has made any comment about (the coaching situation), other than that we will address it in due course,'' Diller said.
I won’t comment on any rumors whispered to you.‘’
Pressed on whether he could deny it, Diller said, ``I have no official comment.‘’
Popovich, also the team’s executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager, flatly denied that he has made up his mind to take it.
The decision hasn't been made,'' Popovich said.
I don’t know who you are talking to. Whoever you are (talking to) will have to tell you what is going on.‘’
Spurs majority owner Peter Holt said he had not heard about a news conference scheduled for today. But Holt acknowledged that things could move quickly if Popovich spells out his plan.
I'm not saying (it couldn't happen) if Pop came to us and said he wanted to do it,'' Holt said.
It could happen quickly. In my opinion, the sooner we get it resolved, the better.‘’
Holt said the two would have to discuss the contract terms first.
One, he has to tell me he wants to do it,'' Holt said.
Two, we have to sit down and work it out.‘’
Popovich said there was a ``good chance’’ that by the end of the week he would take the job or throw it open to search for someone from outside the organization.
``If we can do that by the end of the week, then we’ll feel a lot better about it,‘’ Popovich said.
Popovich joked about a report in the San Antonio Express-News that the team might make the decision Tuesday.
I'm just sitting here in my bare feet, reading over some contracts,'' he said by telephone.
That’s not going to happen.‘’
Reportedly, there will be a modest restructuring of the Spurs’ front office.
Popovich apparently will retain full authority to implement all basketball-related decisions. But sources have said Sam Schuler, the player personnel director, and R.C. Buford, the head scout, could take on an expanded role.
``They’ve done that since the (coaching) change, anyway,‘’ said another anonymous source, who has ties to Spurs management.
Popovich has two years remaining on his contract as vice president of basketball operations. The first source also said Popovich apparently would be in line for an extension in the interests of maintaining continuity.
The team created a furor among fans last December when it ousted Bob Hill, the previous coach.
Popovich made the decision and took over the coaching reins Dec. 10, the day that All-Star center David Robinson returned after missing the first 18 games with a lower-back injury.
Hill was fired with a 3-15 record. But he had been 121-43 in two previous seasons, tied for the best composite record in the NBA during the 1994-95 and '95-96 seasons.
Popovich never explained why he fired Hill, but it was clear he wanted more attention paid to defense, high intensity at all times and offensive execution.
Wrecked by injuries, the Spurs finished out the year 20-62. The team was 17-47 under Popovich. In all, the team accumulated a franchise-record, 347 player games missed because of injuries or illnesses.
Despite the poor record, most of the key Spurs players - including Robinson, Sean Elliott and Avery Johnson - have voiced support and lobbied for Popovich to be retained.
The reason why?'' Elliott asked after one game in April.
Because these (players) are digging down and playing some defense.‘’ Spurs notes: Team president Jack Diller denied a report that there is an agreement to have a new arena built on the Freeman Coliseum grounds.
``There is no agreement with anyone in regard to any arena project at all,‘’ Diller said.
Bills to authorize financing mechanisms for the arena are pending in the Texas Legislature.
- Spurs guard Vernon Maxwell has yet to take his season-ending physical. Coach Gregg Popovich said Maxwell participated in his exit interview, but never showed up for the medical exam.
Popovich isn’t upset that Maxwell missed the exam.
``Not at all,‘’ he said.
Neither Maxwell nor his agent could be reached for comment.
- The league’s breakdown of major statistical categories showed why the Spurs finished with the third-worst record in the NBA.
Out of the league’s 29 teams, the Spurs finished 27th in points scored per game (90.5), 21st in field-goal percentage (44.2), 19th in points allowed (98.3), 25th in field-goal percentage allowed (47.1) and 20th in rebounding (.497).
Curiously, the Spurs ranked 27th in defensive rebounding (.670) and sixth in offensive rebounding (.324).
``Those stats are meaningless for all the obvious reasons,‘’ said Popovich, indicating he considered injuries to the team’s star players as the underlying factors.
