Can Popovich ride a rocket? His one shot
Gregg Popovich heads into Houston tonight the way he might head into Houston in four months. Unliked and unlikely to win. Beating the Rockets now might raise his stature up a few notches; perhaps some would begin to see him as an intellect superior to, say, Tickle-Me Elmo. Most would note that Bob Hill went 8-2 against Houston the past two seasons, and might very well have won another given the chance.
But if Popovich could somehow win next April, well . . . then doesn’t everything change? Doesn’t even Hill have to admit that, maybe, Popovich was on to something?
That might be the only way Popovich ever turns his career around, or Hill ever admits to anything about this. His anger has burned deeper than even his public comments have let on.
Hill has reason to be angry. But he’s also forgotten a few things, primarily that it was Popovich who gave Hill a job. The money wasn’t bad, of course, and Hill still collects his $650,000 salary. But the opportunity was uncommon; after all, coaches usually don’t inherit 55-win teams.
In contrast in the summer of 1994, Hill’s other possibility was 20-win Minnesota. Bill Blair went on to get the Timberwolves’ job, was fired early into his second year and probably won’t get another chance again. For everything Hill did in San Antonio, could he have done any different with Isaiah Rider?
Hill also forgets how he got his own head-coaching jobs. He took over for a fired Hubie Brown in New York just 16 games into a season. He took over for a fired Dick Versace in Indiana just 25 games into another season. Probably both Brown and Versace disagreed with those decisions, too.
Because of injuries in New York, Hill had no chance to prove himself. Indiana was different. From a 9-16 start, Hill led his group to a 32-25 finish. The Pacers were impressed enough to re-sign him.
Popovich can’t impress so easily. Even if he does better than Hill did in Indiana - if he goes 37-24 - the Spurs will end their season with a break-even record. Such a finish would be an accomplishment with this group, but no one here would see that.
Popovich deserves his existence, since he created it himself. But this goes beyond no-win. After all, even if Popovich somehow went undefeated in March, wouldn’t a lot of people still point out that Hill did the same?
But that was Popovich’s argument - he never cared as much about proving something in the regular season. So maybe it’s only fair he be judged during the time of the season when he ultimately judged Hill.
There’s no guarantee the Spurs will make the playoffs, and their prospects aren’t promising if they do. If the Spurs finish .500, that probably would place them sixth in the West, meaning they would probably draw either Houston or Utah in the first round.
Either would be frightful. But each of the Houston Hall of Famers, for example, already has felt pain this season. On a thin team, that can mean a lot. Without Charles Barkley on Tuesday, the same Vancouver that helped fire Hill beat the Rockets.
Maybe the Rockets limp in April, too. Or maybe the Spurs embrace Popovich’s system, as well as a relaxing role-reversal as the underdog. In a five-game series, doesn’t a team with a healthy Robinson have a chance?
Then so does Popovich. All he has to do is turn around a team playing at a .190 pace. Go on the road for the playoffs. And then beat one of two veteran teams that are both now playing above .800.
So he should relax tonight against a 21-3 team. The hard stuff comes later.
