Maxwell sees better numbers as a Spurs starter

Spurs guard Vernon Maxwell has a theory about why he has played so inconsistently this season. It's hard for me to come off the bench,'' said Maxwell, averaging 11 points per game and shooting only 37.5 percent from the field. I feel that is the reason I’m playing as bad as I have so far.‘’

But Maxwell will likely get his third straight start tonight when the Spurs, even more short-handed than usual, play host to the Utah Jazz at 7:30 in the Alamodome.

San Antonio, hurt by injuries all season, will be without guard Vinny Del Negro (right shoulder bruise) and forward Dominique Wilkins (right knee, patella tendon strain).

In addition, All-Star center David Robinson will miss his fourth straight game since breaking a bone in his left foot last week. Robinson is out another 6-8 weeks.

Beating them will be tough,'' Maxwell said. But if we come up with a win, it would be big. I think we’re going to have to play error-free basketball. They’re playing great right now. We’ll have to be at our best.‘’

The Jazz (22-7) have cooled off some since their franchise-record 15-game winning streak ended Dec. 12. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Spurs (7-20) broke a three-game losing streak with a 95-88 victory at Vancouver on Monday.

San Antonio is 1-2 since Robinson broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot against Miami on Dec. 23. In the next game, Del Negro and Wilkins suffered injuries at Seattle. Now the team is scrambling for live bodies and offense, especially with forward Sean Elliott limping on a swollen right knee.

Elliott is listed as questionable for tonight.

Maxwell, a reserve at shooting guard for most of the season, has six starts in 27 games. Two of those starts came on the last road trip. And he took full advantage of the situation at Vancouver, helping the team to an important victory with a season-high 23 points.

When I start, the rhythm is there,'' Maxwell said. It seems like everything is in place. That’s what helped me (against Vancouver) more than anything.‘’

As a starter, he has averaged 15.8 points on 42.1-percent shooting from the field. As a reserve, Maxwell has often struggled, averaging 10.5 points and hitting 35.3 percent from the floor.

He hasn't started enough to make a comparison,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. If you look at those statistics, it would be jumping to a conclusion. What is a fact is that he is taking better shots now. He’s open. He’s balanced. He’s more in a rhythm.‘’

Popovich said Maxwell’s shooting woes don’t necessarily stem from his role as a reserve.

A lot of Vern's poor shooting had more to do with the kind of shots he was taking,'' Popovich said. He shot a lot with the clock winding down, off-balance. It resulted in a poorer percentage.‘’

When told of Popovich’s sentiments, Maxwell didn’t back away from his theory.

He's the coach,'' Maxwell said. I guess he’s got his opinion. But I feel more comfortable starting than coming off the bench. That’s what’s helped me (lately) more than anything.‘’

Maxwell has enjoyed some of his best moments this season when he has been in the starting lineup. On Nov. 13, when Del Negro was out with a twisted knee, he scored 22 points and helped the Spurs defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 95-83.

The Spurs are 2-4 when Maxwell starts, and all six games have been when the team has played without Robinson, who missed the first 18 games of the season with a back injury. The Spurs are 4-17 overall when Robinson hasn’t played.

If Maxwell is pushing for a starting job, he may get at least two more chances to prove his point. Both Del Negro and Wilkins are doubtful for the team’s game at Denver on Friday night.

Wilkins will have an MRI test on his knee today, which should provide the Spurs with more answers on his condition. Wilkins, who will turn 37 on Jan. 12, iC leading the team with an average of 18.9 points per game.

The people we have playing just have to do the best they can,'' Popovich said, and if they do that, then you walk away feeling good about it.‘’

There have been optimistic whispers that forward Chuck Person, who hasn’t played a game this season after back surgery on Oct. 29, could be back in six weeks.

``We’ll see,‘’ Person said, smiling as he rode a stationary bicycle after Wednesday’s practice, during which he shot some jumpers on the side.

Person will travel with the team to Denver. It will be his first road trip of the season. He could receive clearance to start practice when he visits a West Coast sports-medicine clinic Monday.

The Jazz, who eliminated the Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals last May, have dropped three games in a row on the road. But they have earned the respect of the Spurs with earlier victories over Chicago, Miami and Seattle.

They're probably the strongest team (in the West) as far as togetherness,'' Elliott said. They’re playing the best ball. We have them at home. Hopefully, that’ll be an advantage for us.‘’

On the road trip, the Spurs played well in a physical match against Seattle and lost by eight points. They seemed to lack spark against Portland, falling behind by as many as 35 in the second half before losing by 24. But the effort and focus returned against Vancouver.

It was just one of those nights against Portland,'' Elliott said. We missed some easy shots. Then when we got behind, we had the mindset of, `I’m going to do it myself.’ Everyone got a little into themselves in that game. We didn’t make extra passes.

``Against Vancouver, we played much better. That was a big game for us because they had beaten us twice. We felt there was no reason we should have lost that game to them at home (on Dec. 6). We came out and we played well.‘’

Spurs leave Jazz singing the blues - Crowd boosts undermanned San Antonio

The Spurs applauded their own fans after they shocked the Utah Jazz 83-80 Thursday night for the most memorable win in one of their most forgettable seasons. Players and coaches tipped their caps to 15,220 patrons, whose stomping and cheering made it sound as if there were twice as many people in the cavernous Alamodome.

I've been around here for a long time, and the crowd has always been great,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. But to have them respond the way they did tonight was definitely a factor. We gave them something to yell about and then we worked off of that. You could say we worked well together.‘’

As the Spurs fought off the Jazz in the final, frantic minutes, fans sensed they were seeing something special, which doesn’t happen very often during an 82-game NBA season.

They witnessed a bedraggled home team, without five injured players, upset one of the top squads in the league. Curiously, the Spurs improved to 2-1 this season in games when five players have been sidelined. Earlier, they beat the Los Angeles Lakers 95-83 when five men were out.

That says that every team in the NBA can win,'' Popovich said. It says each team has talent. Although a lot of things have to line up, if you believe you can win, it can happen.‘’

With the loss, the Jazz fell to 22-8. They have dropped six of 11 games since they won a franchise-record 15 in a row a few weeks ago. The Spurs, meanwhile, improved to 8-20.

They emerged with the victory despite poor shooting (44.6 percent from the field, and 66.7 percent from the line), but they more than made up for it with a huge rebounding edge (45-31).

All I can say is thank you, Jesus,'' said Spurs point guard Avery Johnson, who led the Spurs with 22 points. Tonight, all of our fans pulled us through. They were great.‘’

The Spurs hiked their record to 2-3 since All-Star center David Robinson went down with a broken foot last week. They were also without Charles Smith, Chuck Person, Dominique Wilkins and Vinny Del Negro.

The guys just dug down deep,'' said Spurs forward Sean Elliott, who played with a sore right knee and scored 18 points. Carl (Herrera) definitely was huge. Vernon (Maxwell) was huge. And Avery played tremendous.‘’

After Elliott missed one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining, it left the Jazz trailing by the eventual final score. On the last possession, they missed three three-point shots. Karl Malone, John Stockton and Jamie Watson each took turns firing - and missing.

Spurs center Will Perdue rebounded the first miss and tried to throw an outlet pass to Elliott. But Elliott didn’t see it coming, and Watson stepped in to intercept. He shuffled it to Stockton, one of the best clutch players in the league, who missed himself.

Utah’s Jeff Hornacek rebounded and moved it back to Watson, whose rainbow bounced high off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

I sure didn't want to see Stockton taking one of those last shots,'' Johnson said. You’ve seen him make those over and over again. We wanted anyone but him to take that shot.‘’

Johnson outplayed Stockton all night. The Spurs guard hit his jump shot (9 of 13 from the field) and added six assists and four steals in 40 minutes. Stockton finished with five points (on 2 of 6 shooting) and 11 assists in 35 minutes.

He's been a great leader the last four or five games,'' Popovich said. He’s really concentrated on running the show.‘’

The Spurs went on a 13-6 run midway through the fourth period, pulling into a 76-70 lead with four minutes remaining.

Maxwell capped the rally by grabbing a loose ball and streaking the length of the court for a layup, forcing the Jazz to call time out with 4:01 remaining.

Forward Stephen Howard, recently signed out of the CBA, made his biggest play in his short Spurs career during the stretch when he completed a three-point play.

At the end of the game, much-maligned Spurs veteran forward Carl Herrera hit a clutch shot that put the home team up by six points with 1:45 remaining.

For the Jazz, Malone, Hornacek and Adam Keefe connected on field goals at the end to bring the Jazz to within two. Elliott, fouled in the backcourt, made one of two free throws with 25.3 seconds left for the final point of the evening.

Malone led the Jazz with 26 points. Hornacek added 25 on 9-of-13 shooting. Jazz forward Bryon Russell played only seven minutes of the first half, suffering from the flu.

Perdue scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Spurs. Also, Herrera responded with a season-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots in 30 minutes.

Neither Wilkins nor Del Negro will travel to Denver for the Spurs’ game tonight against the Nuggets. Popovich said it is possible that both could play against the Clippers. Robinson will be out at least until the first week of February with a broken bone in his left foot.

Wilkins (strained patella tendon, right knee) missed his first game as a Spur. He became the ninth player on the roster to sit out with an injury this season. Del Negro (bruised right shoulder) was sidelined for the third game in a row. - - -

Spurs Notes

- Injury update: Injured Dominique Wilkins and Vinny Del Negro were not scheduled to travel with the Spurs for the game tonight at Denver against the Nuggets.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said it is possible that they will play Sunday at home against the Los Angeles Clippers.

An MRI on Wilkins’ right knee Thursday confirmed a strain of the patella tendon.

Both Wilkins and Del Negro, who has a bruised right shoulder, sat out the Utah game Thursday night at the dome. It was the first miss of the season for Wilkins, who became the ninth Spurs player to be sidelined with an injury this season.

Del Negro, who played every game last season, has missed three games in a row and five in all.

- Back-to-back blues: Nothing may be worse than being short-handed with injuries - except if you are short-handed and you are playing back-to-back games.

Tonight’s game at Denver will mark the first of three back-to-back situations the Spurs will face in the next eight days. The Spurs have played back-to-back on three previous occasions this season, going 1- 2 in the first game and 1-2 in the second.

Spurs will win out of thin air - Herrera’s shot dumps Denver, secures third straight victory

DENVER - These heart stoppers are OK when they turn out the right way in the end. Carl Herrera dribbled in as the clock wound down, reared up and tossed in a 13-footer with 2.8 seconds left to give the Spurs a 93-91 lead and an eventual win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.

We were lucky,'' said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, whose team won its third straight. Carl was not the option on that play. He was about the 19th option. The play we drew up didn’t work, but Carl drove and made a hell of a shot.‘’

The Nuggets still had their chance to tie.

Denver’s Tommy Hammonds tossed an inbounds pass down low to LaPhonso Ellis. Ellis’ layup attempt was thwarted by Monty Williams, but the Spur committed a foul with 0.7 seconds left.

Ellis missed the first free throw, then failed to hit the rim on the second. The Spurs (9-20) regained possession and ran out the clock.

Ellis scored a career-high 30 points, but missed 4 of 7 shots from the free-throw line.

I figured coming out of the huddle that, with just six seconds left, anybody could take the shot,'' Herrera said. So I just took it in.‘’

Avery Johnson, the second option on the game-winning play, said he figured Herrera would pass the ball to him.

Vernon (Maxwell) was the first option. I was the second. But neither of us could get the ball (on the inbounds pass),'' Johnson said. So Carl went to it. I was thinking, `Carl, I’m right here,’ but he just took it in.‘’

Maxwell finished with 24 points, including 4-of-6 shooting on three-pointers.

It was a nip-and-tuck battle throughout the fourth period, with the Nuggets (8-23) repeatedly threatening to walk away with the win.

Maxwell silenced the McNichols Arena crowd and put the Spurs up by 89-87 when he swished a 23-footer at the 1:18 mark of the fourth.

Ellis matched that with a turnaround layup at the other end. Williams countered to put the Spurs in front 91-89 with just 25 seconds left in regulation.

But the Nuggets got the ball inside to Ervin Johnson for a dunk and a 91-all tie with six seconds to go, setting the stage for Herrera.

You know, for the last two years we've had great chemistry and continuity on this team,'' Avery Johnson said. Then we lost that this year. But that’s behind us now. Carl’s been here for two years now and it’s time that he started to play, and tonight he really stepped up.‘’

The real struggle for the win began when Johnson scored on a fast- break layup to cap a Spurs rally. San Antonio came back from six points down to lead 86-84 lead with 4:44 left.

We played aggressively and we had the guys on the floor committed to defense,'' Popovich said. That’s how we’re going to win games now until we start getting healthy.‘’

As if there was room for it, the team’s health deteriorated even more during the game.

The Spurs, already down to just two designated starters from the start of the preseason, lost another early in the first when Sean Elliott left with swelling in his right knee.

The forward said he would be ready to play Sunday against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Alamodome. But his absence from the lineup against Denver took a little steam out of the already-frustrated Spurs.

We got down a little when Sean left, but we managed to pick them up again at halftime,'' Popovich said. We couldn’t do anything offensively tonight, but we got a little when we needed it.‘’

The Nuggets also lost a player to injury. Antonio McDyess left in the second with a sprained right ankle.

After Elliott’s departure, Popovich played out the rest of game with his remaining players, flooring varieties of combinations, testing his late arrivals from the CBA and pairing point guards Johnson and Cory Alexander in the backcourt.

Denver tied the game twice in the second and grabbed its first lead since late in the first at 68-66 when Ervin Johnson dunked off an inbounds pass at the 2:54 mark.

Neither team was shooting well but the Spurs, which led 51-45 at halftime, managed to earn a few more shots off rebounds and drove more consistently into the lan to make some layups.

The Spurs scored 28 points in the paint in the first half, compared with the Nuggets’ 20.

(Glenn Rogers)

Spurs Notes

- Smith awaits decision: Spurs forward Charles Smith awaits the outcome of the grievance he filed last year against the New York Knicks. Smith filed last May, not long after coming to the Spurs in a trade, charging that the Knicks withheld medical information about the severity of his knee injury.

Smith has been sidelined the bulk of this season with osteoarthritis of the right knee and his future playing status remains cloudy.

They (Knicks) knew what happened, but I didn't know what was wrong with my knee until I got to San Antonio,'' Smith said Friday night. That’s the object of the grievance. I am very bitter because I was loyal to New York, I played hard for them. They told me I couldn’t damage my knee further by playing.

``But I should have been doing two years ago what I’m doing now. I’m thankful I got to a new team so I have a chance to salvage my career. - Glenn Rogers

- Gannett Service

Haven’t got time for the pain - Back-related injuries striking down NBA players at unprecedented rate

NBA players might want to watch their backs this season. With more than half of it remaining, 12 players have already gone on the injured list with back-related problems. There were only 15 such injuries all of last season.

David Robinson, San Antonio’s All-Star center, missed the first 18 games of the season because of back strain.

Chuck Person, the Spurs’ hot-shooting guard, has missed the entire season so far following back surgery.

Toronto rookie Marcus Camby, the third player picked in last summer’s draft, missed 10 games with a sprained back.

Certain injuries pop up in different years,'' said Donnie Walsh, the Indiana Pacers' team president. This year, it’s the back. I can’t identify a certain reason for it.‘’

Several other players have missed playing time this season because of minor back problems.

The back gets a lot of stress because players' bodies are so long and officials allow so much pushing,'' said Joe O'Toole, the Atlanta Hawks' trainer. Something has to give.‘’

Miami has been hit hardest. Only Dan Majerle (strained lower back) and Tony Farmer (spasms) are on the Heat’s injured list. But Gary Grant (herniated disk), Alonzo Mourning (lower back strain) and Sasha Danilovic sat out games over the weekend.

Also, the Heat’s Tim Hardaway collapsed with back spasms during a game against Indiana. He only played eight minutes, but was back in the lineup two nights later.

It's perplexing,'' Miami coach Pat Riley said. We work hard stretching, doing a lot of things.‘’

But the problem often lies in the kind of movement necessary to play the game.

``The bottom line is most biomechanics don’t think we’re supposed to walk upright,‘’ said Dr. Chad Starkey, the athletic training program director at Northeastern University in Boston and a consultant to the NBA Trainers Association.

``Combine that with the running, jumping and twisting in basketball and doing that four nights a week, eventually it takes a toll. Somebody with low back disorder (doesn’t belong in) the NBA.‘’

Starkey tabulates injuries for the Trainers Association each year. His figures show:

-Back injuries were the third most-frequent injury during the previous three seasons, with a total of 204.

-Back injuries represented 7 percent of all injuries occurring during that period.

-Players missed 2,787 days because of back injuries. Only knee sprains accounted for more missed days.

-Fifty-two NBA players suffered back injuries in the previous three seasons. Six underwent surgery; 34 were chronic conditions.

Starkey said 45 percent of back injuries the past three seasons were caused by overstretching and overloading the back.

An increased emphasis on weight training in recent years also has increased the risk of back injuries. In some instances, players might be using the wrong technique or attempting to lift too much.

One of the most common problems involves simply stretching the hamstring.

``You can’t stretch the hamstring without stretching the back,‘’ said Dennis Householder, the Washington Bullets’ strength and conditioning coach.

Age, weight and the position an athlete plays also are factors in back injuries.

The heavier a player, the more likely a back problem,'' Starkey said. And as a player gets older and has more years in the league, the more likely he is to have problems.‘’

Game-related back injuries to centers are twice as common as at any other position. The majority of back injuries are to players either taller than 7-foot or shorter than 6-3.

An aching back is probably the most difficult injury to ignore and play through, because the back is involved in practically every body movement.

``(It either) goes away or you learn to live with it,‘’ Bullets general manager Wes Unseld said.

Unseld knows. He hyperextended his back going after a rebound when he played for the Bullets. He had to sit a chair for three days because he couldn’t lie down. But he didn’t miss any games.

Larry Bird was reduced to being a figurehead with the original ``Dream Team’’ at the 1992 Summer Olympics because of a bad back. It eventually forced Bird to retire.

Brad Daugherty, a former All-Star center for the Cleveland Cavaliers, retired before the 1996-97 season began after missing the two previous seasons following back surgery.

``After a certain level of pain, there’s nothing you can do,‘’ said former Bullets guard Phil Chenier, who had two back operations during his career.

``The pain is pretty local and, inevitably, it won’t allow you to play. You can tape an ankle, not put pressure on it or not cut. But with the back, with any movement, there’s intensive pain and (it) does more damage.‘’

Before joining the Houston Rockets this last off-season, Charles Barkley considered retirement at one point because of back problems.

If you turn a certain way, you know it's going to hurt,'' said Toronto backup center Acie Earl, who missed six games last season with a lower back strain. You’re playing not to get hurt.‘’

Camby strained his back earlier this season in pregame warmups. The former UMass star lost feeling in his legs and was taken off the court on a stretcher.

``It’s hard to accept the fact that I was out so long, and I still have pain,‘’ Camby said. - - -

Injuries that really hurt

The most significant injuries this season, in terms of impact on the team and the league standings:

Anfernee Hardaway, Orlando Magic

- Injury: Knee surgery (cartilage).

- Expected to return: After the All-Star break.

- Effect: Without Penny, the Magic aren’t worth a nickel. They’re in offensive disarray; they have no on-court leadership and no offensive continuity. There is no one opponents must double-team, which forces the Magic to work hard for all of their points.

- Replacements: Brian Shaw and Darrell Armstrong.

David Robinson, San Antonio Spurs

- Injury: Back strain and surgery to repair a broken foot.

- Expected to return: After the All-Star break.

- Effect: Without the Admiral, the Spurs are a rudderless ship. They have no interior defense and no inside offensive game. The offense is stagnant because much of it was run through Robinson. Asked to do everything, Sean Elliott is now under a lot of pressure.

- Replacements: Will Perdue and Cadillac Anderson.

Rik Smits, Indiana Pacers

- Injury: Surgery on both feet.

- Expected to return: Undetermined.

- Effect: A lot of scoring pressure is on Reggie Miller, who has to do it without teams doubling down on Smits. As a result, he isn’t getting many open looks and has to work extremely hard for everything. Rookie Erick Dampier has gotten valuable playing time, however, and will be a factor even when Smits does return.

- Replacements: Dampier and Antonio Davis.

Luc Longley, Chicago Bulls

- Injury: Separated shoulder.

- Expected to return: After the All-Star break.

- Effect: The Bulls’ post game is hurting, and they have to rely a lot on their outside game; Longley was the youngest starter and an underrated passer; offense doesn’t run through the post as much as before.

- Replacements: Bill Wennington, Robert Parish, Dennis Rodman, Toni Kukoc, Jason Caffey and Dickey Simpkins.

Nate McMillan, Seattle SuperSonics

- Injury: Torn abdominal muscle.

- Expected to return: After the All-Star break.

- Effect: McMillan is like a coach on the floor, and he plays three positions, so the Sonics’ depth really has been hurt. He’s also one of the league’s best perimeter defenders. Without him, teams are finding it much easier to score against the Sonics.

- Replacements: Craig Ehlo and Eric Snow. - Gannett Service

A time for smiles in Spurs’ season of frowns

Pretty soon, the story of the Spurs’ improbable 83-80 victory over the Utah Jazz on Thursday will be stacked under an avalanche of newsprint in some fan’s garage. It will turn yellow with age.

But it is one footnote in an otherwise forgettable basketball season that should be committed to memory before it is hauled out and tossed into the recycling bin.

With a plague of injuries casting doubts on the team’s chances of making the playoffs, it could be one of the few games a Spurs fan can look back on and smile about.

The Spurs, cursed with rotten fortune, have played most of their games without three or four key players. Consequently, they went into the Utah game with the third-worst record in the Western Conference.

They had five men out against the Jazz, one of the West’s best. In the locker room before the game, the Spurs counted the available bodies -10, two recently acquired from the CBA.

When they walked out for warmups, they looked up in the Alamodome and saw a smaller crowd than normal sitting back in its seats, most skeptical of anything positive happening in the first game of the new year.

But after the Jazz misfired on three three-point shots in the final 20 seconds, cheers of playoff intensity erupted among the 15,220 patrons in the building. Fans were in the aisles long afterwards, letting out whoops and hollers.

All I can say,'' Spurs guard Avery Johnson said, sitting at midcourt and speaking with WOAI radio voice Jay Howard, is, `Thank you, Jesus.’ ‘’

As the final score indicated, it was a game in dire need of divine blessing. If one of the trains running down the line on the east side of the dome would have careened off the track and crashed into the building, not many would have been surprised.

After all, it was 18-15 Spurs at the quarter and 38-34 at half. It was a game filled with silly plays and embarrassing gaffes. Both teams turned it over 21 times.

In one second-quarter sequence, Johnson stole the ball from Jazz star John Stockton near midcourt. The Spurs guard, in his haste to create a fast-break layup, threw a blind pass over his head - to nobody in particular. It rolled out of bounds. But on the next Utah possession, Johnson made amends.

He circled Stockton and stole it again.

An exasperated Spurs coach Gregg Popovich leaped out of his seat and motioned wildly with both hands - palms down - to slow the tempo. Please.

The fourth quarter was an adventure in itself. The Spurs, trailing by two, attacked Utah’s big lineup with quick strikes on offense and pressure defense. Johnson scored 12 of his 22 points in the quarter, three off drives into the middle of Utah’s tall timber.

Perhaps the most surprising break came with six minutes remaining. Stephen Howard, recently signed out of Oklahoma City in the CBA, drove the lane and crashed into Utah’s Adam Keefe. His shot went in. An official’s whistle blew. Foul on . . . Keefe, the veteran, for blocking?

It had to be the Spurs’ night. Howard sank the free throw for a three-point play. Later, the much-maligned Carl Herrera hit a 9- footer in traffic. Carl Herrera? What was going on here? It was about to become a game storyline that could be submitted to Psychology Today - insane.

Here was a bedraggled team that had lost to Vancouver twice and was rocked by a coaching change, on the verge of defeating the Jazz, owners of wins over Chicago, Seattle and Miami.

Despite shaky free-throw shooting by the Spurs down the stretch, which opened the door for the Jazz to tie at the end, they hung on. Utah’s Karl Malone, Stockton and Jamie Watson all hoisted treys on the final possession.

They went clang, clang, clang -music to a struggling team’s ears.

Johnson said the victory meant nothing in the way of making up for May’s playoff loss to the Jazz.

But it is a big game for us,'' he said, because of all the injuries we’ve had and the direction of the team this year. For a team that’s had nothing go right, we needed something to smile about.‘’

Spurs Notes

- Parade of pain continues: Forward Dominique Wilkins will not play tonight against the Clippers and guard Vinny Del Negro is ``very questionable,‘’ Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. Forward Sean Elliott is also questionable with a sore knee, although it is expected that he will try to suit up.

Wilkins (right knee, patella tendon strain) has been sidelined for the last two games and Del Negro (bruised shoulder) has missed the last four.

The Clippers (11-19) played Saturday night at Houston. Despite the injuries, the Spurs (9-20) have won three in a row, including the victory at Denver in which Carl Herrera and Monty Williams emerged as unlikely heroes.

Herrera hit the eventual game-winning shot and Williams nailed a clutch jumper in the final seconds.

Popovich gave his team the day off Saturday. He hailed the players’ work ethic during practices as the reason for the team’s resurgence and singled out center Will Perdue and point guard Avery Johnson for their contributions.

Perdue has been absolutely indispensable,'' Popovich said. He’s been plugging up the middle, rebounding. And, obviously, the other guy is AJ. In the huddle, he has such a positive attitude.‘’

- Radio shuffle: The Spurs-Clippers pregame radio show tonight can be heard only on The Ticket (KTKR-AM 760) because WOAI-AM 1200, the Spurs’ flagship station, will be carrying the end of the Dallas- Carolina NFL playoff game.

If the Cowboys game goes beyond 6 p.m., The Ticket also will be the only radio station locally carrying the start of the Spurs game. WOAI will pick up the Spurs broadcast at the conclusion of the Cowboys game. The Ticket will carry the Spurs game in its entirety. - Jerry Briggs

Clippers catch fire late, surpass Spurs

Matters took a couple of turns for the worse for the Spurs on Sunday night. First, they scrapped and scraped but still came up on the short end of a 93-84 score against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Alamodome.

Second, the news was delivered that Sean Elliott and Dominique Wilkins would not travel with the team on a four-game road trip that begins Tuesday night in New Jersey.

Coach Gregg Popovich said that Elliott, nursing a chronic case of tendinitis in his right quadriceps, would be out 7-10 days, and that Wilkins, nursing a strained right patella tendon, could miss another two weeks. Wilkins did not play Sunday.

First thing’s first. The Clippers crunched the Spurs with a barrage of three-pointers in the final period.

San Antonio sailed into the final quarter with a 62-61 lead, having overcome an eight-point third-quarter deficit. The Clippers, who had missed their first nine three-point shots of the evening, then stuck three in their next four possessions and grabbed a 72-64 advantage while the Spurs were missing layups and three-pointers and turning the ball over.

When we got that one-point lead, we lost our discipline at both ends of the floor,'' Popovich said. They started hitting three- pointers. We tried to do things on our own offensively. This is the first time it’s happened; it gives us something to work on.‘’

Vernon Maxwell was the sharpest of the Spurs who tried to take matters into his own hands. He scored 11 points in the quarter and reminded fans of the Maxwell who tortured San Antonio during his tenure with the Houston Rockets.

Maxwell hit two jumpers to keep the game within reach. He then buried a long three to close the Spurs’ deficit to 72-70 at the 7:03 mark.

The Clippers again tried to stretch away and went back up by eight. But the Spurs whittled it back down to 80-76 after a Monty Williams six-footer.

But Maxwell was then hit with a flagrant foul after flooring Brent Barry with a heavy forearm to the upper chest. Barry had just finished pushing off Maxwell.

Barry hit two free throws, and Pooh Richardson made matters worse by nailing another three-pointer when the Clippers retained possession because of the flagrant foul.

Just the heat of the moment,'' Maxwell said. I’m not going to talk about that; I’ll just talk about basketball.‘’

Maxwell tried to rectify things and almost did. He swished consecutive 27-footers to bring the announced crowd of 12,891 up and roaring and the Spurs to an 87-84 deficit with a minute left to play.

Loy Vaught missed a 14-footer at the other end, and Maxwell tried to tie the game. But he missed a 23-footer.

It felt good leaving my hands,'' Maxwell said. I just wanted to get the game into overtime because visiting teams don’t like overtime games.‘’

The loss snapped the Spurs’ three-game win streak.

It was a disappointing loss, no doubt,'' said Avery Johnson. We were in the game and then didn’t execute down the stretch. We got some calls against us that shifted the momentum.‘’

Johnson agreed the team might have lost a semblance of the tight discipline that’s held it together the past several games, but he still liked the overall effort.

I think what happened, too, was that we changed our defense a little and some of us were still doing things that we had done before the change,'' he said. We weren’t all on the same page. But it was still aggressive after we lost our discipline; we were still out there trying to help each other.‘’

Elliott said his upcoming break from games is for the best.

It's disappointing, I'm not happy about it,'' he said. But if we don’t do it, I’ll just keep moving the way I’m moving now. We tried taking some (anti-)inflammatories, some aspirins, but only time will do it.‘’

Elliott played 39 minutes Sunday. He had 17 points but hit just 4 of 14 field-goal attempts. He had little or no lift on his shots as the game wore on.

-Spurs notes: Forward Charles Smith seems to remain steadfastly optimistic that he will play again this year.

Smith is on the injured list with osteoarthritis of the right knee.

``I’ll be back. The knee is getting better. I understand there are a lot of guys playing with this type of thing, so I feel pretty good right now,‘’ Smith said.

-The Spurs had a less-than-enjoyable return trip to San Antonio from Denver on Friday night.

The team left Denver after their win over the Nuggets, but fog closed down the San Antonio airport. The charter plane landed in Austin, and the Spurs bused home. The team arrived in San Antonio after 4 a.m. Saturday.

-Coach Gregg Popovich seemed to get progressively more vocal with the referees as the game wore on Sunday night. Finally, at the end, he was shouting across the floor at ref Jack Nies: ``Call the foul, call the foul.‘’

Every coach gets frustrated with the officials,'' Popovich said. A coach would be a weird guy if he didn’t get frustrated. But the officials don’t make calls purposely against any team; they don’t try to get anybody.‘’

Limping East, seeking wins - Spurs open trip against Nets, this time without ailing Elliott

The rapidly diminishing corps of Spurs will trek through the East for the next five days. San Antonio, leaving some wounded players behind while carrying others for emotional and spiritual support, begins a four-game road trip at 6:30 tonight in East Rutherford, N.J., against the New Jersey Nets.

Staying behind are David Robinson, Sean Elliott and Charles Smith. Traveling but not playing will be Dominique Wilkins and Chuck Person. Traveling and hoping to play sometime during the trip is Vinny Del Negro.

It's getting a little ridiculous,'' said a resigned but ready Coach Gregg Popovich. We’re going to have very little room for error. We’re going to need a lot of discipline at both ends of the floor.‘’

The Spurs’ roster changed again Monday. The team waived newcomers Stephen Howard and Gaylon Nickerson and signed former Texas Tech star forward Jason Sasser to a 10-day contract.

But the winning or losing will rest on the shoulders of the veterans.

The major new alteration is the loss of Elliott to chronic tendinitis of the right knee and the insertion of Monty Williams as the starting small forward. Vernon Maxwell will continue to start at shooting guard.

Del Negro is sidelined with a partially separated right shoulder and sprained AC joint.

It's feeling better; it's day to day now,'' said Del Negro, who practiced shooting during Monday's brief workout at the University of the Incarnate Word. I just want to make sure that the shoulder will stand up under a hit. I’m not worried about shooting; I just want the shoulder to withstand the picks, taking shots.‘’

Del Negro said his shoulder was pushed partially out when he was hit by Jim McIlvaine in the Seattle game Dec. 26. ``The AC joint kept it from going all the way out but the joint was stretched.‘’

Elliott will rest from 7-10 days to strengthen his sore knee, and Williams will be in the spotlight during the four-game swing.

There's pressure on all of us now, and there will be pressure on me,'' Williams said. But I’m not going to try to fill Sean’s shoes. I’ll just play my game.‘’

Williams and Smith came to San Antonio from the Knicks in the trade for J.R. Reid, Brad Lohaus and a first-round draft pick. Popovich said at the time that he wanted Williams included in the trade to make up for the moving of the Spurs’ first-round pick (No. 18).

Cadillac Anderson also is expected to see more minutes at power forward to increase San Antonio’s rebounding ability. But the basic need of scoring should suffer most with the bulk of the team’s shooters on the sidelines.

-Spurs notes: Had the team kept Howard and Nickerson through Friday, their contracts would have been guaranteed for the rest of the season.

Sasser signed after a stint with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the CBA. He was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the 1996 draft with the 41st pick. The Kings traded his draft rights to Portland.

The forward averaged 16.2 points through 20 games with the Skyforce.

Sasser played four seasons at Texas Tech. Last season he was a third-team All-American and the Southwest Conference Player of the Year.

With the waivers, the Spurs now have room to bring in still another player. Teams were allowed to sign players to 10-day contracts beginning Monday.

-Person was examined at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Inglewood, Calif., on Monday and was expected to join the team in New Jersey tonight. He and Wilkins will continue therapy and work out with the team during the four-game swing through the Eastern Conference.

Spurs swamped in Jersey -Eight isn’t enough - even against Nets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - A wall of frustration confronted the Spurs on Tuesday night. They crashed into it unceremoniously at Continental Airlines Arena, losing 90-74 to the lowly New Jersey Nets. In most games this season, the Spurs have been short-handed, missing three or four injured players at a time. On this night, they were without six regulars, including center David Robinson and forwards Sean Elliott and Dominique Wilkins.

That left the Spurs with only eight players in uniform against New Jersey.

Elliott, out with a sore knee, has been the latest casualty. He did not travel on the four-game road trip that continues tonight in Boston. Guard Vinny Del Negro is the injured player closest to being ready, but his shoulder is still sore and he will not suit up against the Celtics.

In the face of all the adversity, Spurs forward Monty Williams said it’s almost too much for a team to handle.

``We’ve had so many things happen to us,‘’ said Williams, who was bothered by a stomach injury from the outset and bruised his shoulder in a second-half fall.

``If you are honest and truthful, there is only so much you can take. Only God knows. God blesses us with a threshold (of frustration), and only he knows what that threshold is.‘’

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich insisted his team, with only eight players, needs to battle through the mental roadblocks.

When Sean went down, there's a tendency to doubt your ability to win,'' Popovich said. We’ve got to fight that natural inclination. We have to keep putting out the same effort. Sometimes that’s hard because you don’t have enough guys.‘’

The Spurs, trailing by eight at halftime, crumbled in the third period.

New Jersey outscored San Antonio 31-18 in the period, with forward Jayson Williams taking a lead role in the thrashing.

Williams, in his first game back since missing the previous nine with a bruised leg, hit jumpers and ran the floor and dunked on the fast break. He finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds.

I feel real good to go back and play,'' Williams said. I’m not as talented as all the other guys, so I go out and play harder.‘’

Early in the fourth, the Nets kicked the lead up to 23 when 7- foot-6 center Shawn Bradley (15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocked shots) hit two free throws.

The Spurs cut the final margin of defeat down to size in a two- minute garbage time at the end.

This was a tough game,'' Popovich said. We didn’t play well, and part of it is because we’re depleted. But (Nets coach) John (Calipari) has his guys playing hard. They played harder than we did.‘’

With the victory, the Nets improved to 9-21. The Spurs (9-22), who had won six of nine before Elliott came up lame, have lost two straight.

Spurs guard Avery Johnson and Monty Williams each scored 16 points. It was a career-high for Williams, but he wasn’t smiling about that in the locker room. He was concerned about his right shoulder, jarred in a fall to the court after a layup in the fourth.

It's sore,'' Williams said. I’m going to have it checked out. With my stomach, I felt it slowed me down in going after some loose balls. But I still have to get things done. I don’t have any choice (but to keep playing). That’s the way I look at it.‘’

One of the Spurs’ 24 turnovers could make the blooper highlight reel.

During garbage time, Carl Herrera secured a loose ball and passed to midcourt, where it hit Will Perdue in the back of the head. As it glanced off Perdue, Vernon Maxwell tipped it up, and it landed on top of Perdue’s head.

With many in the crowd of 13,860 shaking their heads, the Nets recovered.

There were other embarrassing footnotes, such as getting outrebounded by the Nets 52-39. Also, the Spurs made only 16 of 29 free throws.

Missing injured players may have had something to do with the rebounding deficit. But the free-throw debacle may be a signal of failing concentration.

We've got a job to do,'' said Maxwell, who missed all five of his free throws. And I know we can do a lot better than we did. I thought we’d play a lot better. Look at me. I missed five free throws and made seven turnovers. It was a pretty tough game.‘’

With the loss, Popovich’s record fell to 6-7 since he took over as a coach for Bob Hill. Popovich is 3-4 without Robinson in the lineup. In contrast, Hill was 3-15 - all without Robinson - when he was fired Dec. 10. - - -

Spurs Notes

- Person’s road back: Spurs forward Chuck Person, sidelined since he underwent back surgery Oct. 29, was told by a physician Monday that he could be playing again in six weeks.

Dr. Robert Watkins of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Inglewood, Calif., cleared Person to begin running on a treadmill.

- Hill to visit Calipari: Former Spurs coach Bob Hill, fired on Dec. 10, is expected to visit with friend and Nets coach John Calipari today.

- Daniels waiting: A Nets executive said the team is interested in re-signing guard Lloyd Daniels, who was waived Monday. Daniels played two seasons for the Spurs through 1994. - Jerry Briggs

Celts’ win adds pain to hobbling Spurs

BOSTON - The Spurs thought they had bottomed out in early December when they lost for the second time to the Vancouver Grizzlies. But after a 107-83 setback Wednesday night to the Boston Celtics, they may have discovered new depths to what is fast becoming a bottomless pit of a season.

I've got to find a way to give them their hearts back,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. They’ve worked at a high capacity for three weeks, and when Sean Elliott went down, it had a huge effect on them. After the injury to Sean, they lost their heart and their belief in themselves.‘’

A laid-back FleetCenter crowd of 14,490 watched a game in which either coach could moan about injuries.

Both the Spurs and Celtics were missing six injured players. The Spurs, after signing two players out of the CBA in the last three days, had the numbers on the Celtics - nine players suited up to the Celtics’ eight.

Celtics guard David Wesley, a Texas native, was surprised when Spurs guard Avery Johnson approached him before the game. Johnson was joking about the Spurs’ injury situation.

Avery came up to me and said, `Can you loan us some guys?' '' Wesley said. I said, `We can’t loan you any. We don’t have any we can spare.’ ‘’

The Celtics entered the game with the second-worst record in the NBA. But after beating the Spurs, Boston is 8-23 with its third win in its last five games. The Spurs, meanwhile, lost their third in a row and fell to 9-23, including 0-2 on this four-game Eastern Conference road swing.

We got outworked and outhustled,'' Popovich said. Boston had a lot to do with it. They wanted the game and they went after it for 48 minutes.‘’

Boston pulled off the stunner without a true center on the floor. Although some would argue that the Celtics don’t have a true center even when everyone is healthy, they were missing Dino Radja, Alton Lister, Frank Brickowski and Pervis Ellison.

The Spurs more than obliged, turning the ball over a season-high 26 times, which led to 38 points by the Celtics. Boston produced 27 points on the break, compared to 12 by the Spurs.

``We ran in a couple of CBA guys this week, and it’s been tough for people to be on the same page,‘’ Popovich said.

With the loss, Popovich fell to 6-8 since he took over as head coach on Dec. 10. Maybe more significantly, the Spurs are 3-5 since All-Star center David Robinson broke a bone in his right foot on Dec. 23, including three losses in a row.

Things are beginning to look a little like they did under former coach Bob Hill, who was fired on Dec. 10 with a 3-15 record - all without Robinson, who missed the first 18 games with a back injury. Under Hill, the team played hard at times, but then lost its concentration and focus as time wore on.

But there is one significant difference. Hill never had Robinson, Elliott and Dominique Wilkins out at the same time. The absence of the three scoring threats has left the Spurs nearly powerless.

I'm not so much disappointed in the loss,'' Johnson said. What’s more discouraging is the lack of emotion and effort. There were so many turnovers tonight, balls all over the gym. I think all the (roster) changes are hardest on the point guard.‘’

With newcomers Devin Gray and Jason Sasser playing extended minutes, the Spurs put several new combinations on the floor. But none of them seemed to work well. The pick-and-roll play was botched several times, with the Celtics picking off the pass and racing for a layup.

I couldn't even run the pick-and-roll,'' said Johnson, who was credited with a season-high eight turnovers. They did a good job of trapping me.‘’

Monty Williams, starting for Elliott at small forward, took another shot to his injured right shoulder late in the game. He went up for a layup, and Boston rookie Antoine Walker landed on top of him. He spent the last few minutes of the game on the bench, bundled up with an ice bag. - - -

Spurs Notes

- Spurs sign forward: The Spurs announced the signing of Devin Gray, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound forward, to a 10-day contract. Gray suited up in his Spurs debut Wednesday night at the FleetCenter against the Boston Celtics.

Gray was waived by the Sacramento Kings on Monday. He played three games for the Kings, averaging 2.7 points and 3.0 rebounds. Gray, a former Clemson University standout, played all of last season and the start of this season with the CBA’s Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Gray joined forward Jason Sasser, who also played at Sioux Falls, as the second player to sign a 10-day contract with the injury- depleted Spurs since Monday.

- Hearing rescheduled: The Spurs recently got a break in a Houston courtroom that may help them on the basketball court.

Guard Vernon Maxwell’s hearing before a Houston judge on a marijuana possession charge has been pushed back to next Thursday.

Since Maxwell last met in person with the judge on Nov. 15, his followup hearing had been scheduled for Friday - the day of the Spurs-Detroit Pistons game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich.

A spokesman in the Harris County district attorney’s office said Wednesday that the date of the hearing was pushed back to next Thursday - an off day between Spurs home games - at the request of defense attorneys.

The Spurs guard has been meeting with Harris County Judge Don Jackson approximately every 90 days since last January, when Maxwell was released on appeal of his 90-day jail sentence.

It gets no easier for Spurs

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - The floundering Spurs will meet the Detroit Pistons, one of the toughest teams in the Eastern Conference, at 7 tonight in The Palace of Auburn Hills. Down 0-2 on a four-game road swing through the East, and working on a three-game losing streak, the Spurs will come face-to-face with All-Star forward Grant Hill and the Pistons.

It doesn't get no easier,'' Spurs guard Vernon Maxwell said. We have to play harder than we’ve been playing. I know that much.‘’

The Spurs (9-23) will finish the trip with a Saturday night game at Atlanta, another of the East’s best squads. But first, the Pistons (24-8 overall, 15-4 at home) will come at them with a deep and talented team.

Led by Coach Doug Collins and fueled by the all-around play of Hill, the Pistons have emerged from mediocrity over the past few seasons to post the second-best record in the East.

Spurs guard Vinny Del Negro, who has missed the last seven games with a bruised and sprained shoulder, could be available tonight. But five other players - including David Robinson, Sean Elliott and Dominique Wilkins - are all out.

Forward Monty Williams, who aggravated a sprained shoulder Wednesday night at Boston, is expected to play.

Without their top guns, the Spurs have struggled against lottery competition during the latest losing streak.

First, they lost by nine points at home to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Next, as they ventured out on the road, they fell by 16 points at New Jersey on Tuesday and by 24 at Boston.

Maxwell said the Spurs played worse against the Celtics than they did in two previous losses to Vancouver, the worst team in the West.

It was a tough loss,'' he said. Our level of play wasn’t where it should have been. It could have been a lot better. You’d think players who don’t get to play a lot would take advantage of the situation. But I don’t see that happening.‘’

The injuries and an ever-changing roster also are hurting the team’s cohesion. The Spurs released two players earlier this week and signed two others - forwards Devin Gray and Jason Sasser - to 10-day contracts.

Because of the injuries, players on the court often are out of their normal positions. Add to that the confusion of Gray and Sasser just learning the system, and it’s created a problem with turnovers.

The Spurs had 24 against New Jersey and tied a season-high with 26 against the Celtics.

We're in a position where our main guys aren't here,'' said Spurs center Will Perdue, who had 13 points and 14 rebounds against Boston. When everyone is healthy, Dave and Sean take the majority of the shots. If you don’t have them, you have to take care of the ball.‘’

The Spurs went 121-43 combined in the last two seasons. But this year, the injuries have gutted a proud franchise. If the Spurs turned things around to go 39-43 this season, they would probably feel good about it - if it gave them a playoff spot.

There's just a lot of frustration,'' Perdue said. I wish I had an answer. It seems like every time we get a little momentum, something else happens.‘’

Elliott’s knee has been a problem waiting to flare up and hurt the Spurs all season. He missed a game and sat out several practices in November, but continued to play through the pain.

After a 40-minute, 29-point explosion in a victory over Phoenix on Dec. 21, Elliott seemed to be returning to All-Star form. But his production gradually fell off until Spurs coach Gregg Popovich ruled him out for the road trip earlier this week.

In the losses to New Jersey and Boston, Elliott’s teammates missed more than his scoring and playmaking ability.

I think the team hit the wall (emotionally) when Sean went down,'' Popovich said after the Boston game. They lost that belief. It was the final straw. They were saying, `How, the hell do we do this now?’ My hope is they see that they can’t afford to have that attitude or they’re going to keep getting beat like they got beat tonight.‘’

Pistons hum right along against Spurs

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - After taking two games off mentally, the Spurs finally showed some effort and concentration Friday night against the Detroit Pistons. It was enough to bring a hint of a smile to the face of Coach Gregg Popovich.

The final score wasn’t quite so merry, however. The Spurs, still ravaged by injuries, lost 84-78 to the Pistons before 19,733 fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

I couldn't ask for anything more,'' Popovich said. I’m really proud of them. They competed at both ends of the court. They made a statement that they can do it, no matter who they play.‘’

The Pistons built a 24-point lead in the first half, then hung on as the Spurs made it close during fourth-quarter garbage time.

With Detroit coach Doug Collins using many of his backups, the Spurs outscored the Pistons 30-18 in the final period.

Doug played a lot of guys,'' Popovich said. At the end of the game, we got a little lucky and hit some shots. It wasn’t indicative of the type of game it was.‘’

With the win, the Pistons improved to 25-8. The Spurs dropped their fourth in a row and fell to 9-24 overall, including 6-9 under Popovich. The Spurs are 0-3 on the current East Coast road trip heading into the finale at 6:30 tonight in Atlanta.e Boston Celtics.

Against the Pistons, though, the Spurs took much better care on their offensive possessions and played more under control. The Pistons had much more talent on the floor, but the Spurs managed to stay within striking distance most of the night.

``A lot of it had to do with the fact that it was Detroit,‘’ said Spurs guard Cory Alexander, who scored a season-high 18 points and made things interesting with a three-point barrage at the end.

``The level of the opposition gets better and we play better. If we can play with more consistent effort, we’ll be all right.‘’

Detroit forward Grant Hill played listlessly at times and still produced 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Forward Terry Mills did major damage off the bench, hitting three three-pointers in the second quarter as the Pistons took control. Mills finished with 18 points.

For the Spurs, Vernon Maxwell scored 21 and Carl Herrera hit several long jumpers to finish with 13. But as a team, the Spurs once again unraveled at times in the absence of their top offensive stars, including center David Robinson and forwards Sean Elliott and Dominique Wilkins.

The Spurs’ offense is a mess, generally speaking. It has now produced consecutive games of 74, 83 and 78 points. In the second and third quarters against the Pistons, it broke down almost completely. The Spurs scored only 30 points in the middle two periods.

Vinny Del Negro, who has been out since Dec. 26 with a sprained and bruised right shoulder, returned to score five points on 2-of-7 shooting in 21 minutes. He tried to remain positive about what has become a nightmare season for the veterans.

I felt pretty good out there,'' Del Negro said. A few times, (the shoulder) hurt me. It’s just real difficult with all the injuries. You just got to go with what you have. We’ve just had so much change.‘’

Spurs players winced when they were reminded hey have now lost more games this season than they did all of last year, when they finished 59-23.

Wow,'' point guard Avery Johnson said. It’s hard. Right now, I try not to look at the record. I used to look at it every day when we were going for the best record in the league. But right now, I don’t look. It’s not a good feeling.‘’

The Pistons, conversely, are far ahead of last year’s pace. Last season, they didn’t win their 25th game until Feb. 17. They have won 10 of their last 12, and they still aren’t completely satisfied.

We came out sluggish in the beginning,'' Hill said. They just wouldn’t die. We played just good enough to win. But a win is a win and I’ll take it.‘’

A slow pace played by both teams, aggressive defense - especially by the Pistons - and wayward shooting on some open looks by the Spurs conspired to keep the score down to a collegiate level.

The Spurs hit 40.5 percent from the field. But they were making only 33 percent through three quarters when the Pistons were playing their regular rotations. The Pistons, on the other hand, hit only 44.6 percent.

The Spurs stayed competitive for a quarter, trailing 22-18 after the first 12 minutes. But the Pistons dominated the second period and built a 47-32 lead at the break.

Friends, foes recall Drossos’ fierce loyalty to Spurs - `There wouldn’t be a franchise without him’

Former Spurs coaches, players and agents were saddened Friday by the news of the death of former Spurs owner Angelo Drossos. Drossos, who had been ill for several years, was the prime force in bringing the team to San Antonio in 1973 where he remained at the helm until 1988.

I talked to him, through his wife, in November on his birthday,'' said Bob Bass, former coach and vice president of the Spurs, now general manager of the Charlotte Hornets. He knew who I was. We communicated a little.

``I think everybody knows that he was the driving force behind the Spurs. Keeping the Spurs in San Antonio was his No. 1 objective.‘’

Said longtime Spurs trainer John Andersen: ``You’ll hear this from everyone about Angelo, but there wouldn’t be a franchise without him. The (NBA-ABA) merger may not have been completed. I always had a lot of respect for him. He was always fair.‘’

Former Spurs head coach Stan Albeck, now an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, echoed Andersen’s sentiments.

No one had a bigger impact on the Spurs than Angelo,'' Albeck recalled. The influence and power he had - he absolutely dominated meetings, (Spurs) owners meetings, league meetings. He was right there in the day-to-day operation.‘’

It was his tenacity, his presence and undying loyalty to the Spurs that not only helped Drossos bring the Spurs to town, but also keep them here.

He was able to stay afloat through some tough times,'' Bass said. It was a major accomplishment, getting so many good players and winning so many games in a small market. And he never had to make cash calls to the investors.

``We had maybe nine or 10 people in the front office. Other teams had from 30 to 35. I guess you’d have to say I was his guy for a long time, about 13 years.‘’

Bass noted that while Drossos was the boss, some activities away from the office relied more on friendship.

Angelo was very competitive. I'll tell you a story,'' Bass said. We went out dove hunting and we had two bets, one on the most birds shot, one on the percentage of shots fired and hit. Well, he was on one side of this pond, I was on the other. I heard shots. I went over to him and he said `I hit 10 of 12.’ Well, I knew I had heard a lot of shots. We counted his shells, there were 12, but I know he had more hidden in his boots or somewhere.‘’

Drossos made sure the Spurs would remain in San Antonio when he signed U.S. Naval Academy center David Robinson. Drossos always remarked that he was fortunate that a friend of his, Lee Fentress, represented Robinson.

Angelo was a very loyal fellow,'' Fentress said. He was an interesting guy.‘’

Fentress and Drossos spent a lot of hours hammering out the contract that landed Robinson in San Antonio.

You know, there were a couple of times when San Antonio almost didn't get David,'' Fentress said. Then we met down there for about six hours. Angelo’s objective was to bring David to the city. There were times when I thought he lost sight of that. But we always took some timely breaks and got back on track.‘’

Inserted into Robinson’s contract was a clause that guaranteed he had to be paid at least the average of the two highest-paid players in the league. The clause assured the center of an ever-climbing pay and eliminated the rough edges of contract renegotiation.

``The clause made it possible for David to go to San Antonio, but there were other issues that Angelo argued about,‘’ Fentress said.

Fentress also recalls the beginnings of the salary cap.

Angelo would just call sometimes, just to chat, no real agenda,'' Fentress said. One time he asked me what I thought of the idea of a salary cap. I said, `It will never happen. It’s outrageous.’ . . . Well, that shows you how wrong I was.

``Angelo was just a very persuasive person.‘’

Drossos also had his moments with today’s premier NBA agent, David Falk, representative of Michael Jordan and a host of other elite players.

I was extremely fond of him,'' said Falk, who represented Johnny Dawkins when the latter was a Spur. I was kind of a junior representative back when I was dealing with Angelo. He was the kind of guy whose bark was a little worse than his bite.‘’

``He had a sense of fairness. If you showed that sense, he was very gracious. He had a passion. He spoke through his heart and he had the heart of a lion.‘’

Doug Moe had his stint as head coach of the Spurs and he endured some rocky moments during his dealings with Drossos.

``I’m very sorry to hear that. I give my condolences to the family. I know it has been a very difficult time for them,‘’ Moe said when contacted about Drossos’ death.

I guess I'd have to say our relationship was strained when I was there, pretty explosive,'' Moe said. But we mended that after I left and it became great. I liked Angelo and I’m glad I got to see him a few times before he really had major problems.‘’

The first player Drossos signed to a professional basketball contract was George Karl, now head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics.

He was very strong in a lot of ways,'' Karl said. Down there, it looked like the boat was going down a few times but he was very stubborn and he kept it going. Personally, he was kind of a bulldog, in-your-face kind of guy, but he had a lot of love for people involved with him.‘’

Bringing Spurs to San Antonio put city on the national map

Angelo Drossos was remembered as a man who brought more than a game to San Antonio. He brought a sense of identity to San Antonio. He introduced basketball to thousands of football-crazed San Antonians.

And, more importantly for the city’s financial future, he introduced millions across the country to San Antonio.

Drossos, 68, died of pneumonia Thursday night. The pneumonia set in after Drossos’ body was ravaged by supra nuclear palsy, a progressive neurological disorder he began to suffer from in 1988.

Drossos and a group of 20 investors purchased the ABA Dallas Chaparrals on a ``lend-lease’’ option in 1973. The team was renamed the Spurs after moving to San Antonio and joined the NBA in 1976 after three years in the ABA.

When the NBA skyrocketed in popularity in the late 1970s, San Antonio received free publicity worth millions.

You could argue that Angelo had one of the biggest impacts on San Antonio in the last two decades,'' former San Antonio mayor Henry Cisneros said in a telephone conversation from Washington, D.C., because the Spurs changed the nation’s knowledge and perception of San Antonio and we would not have had the Spurs without Angelo.‘’

To this day, Cisneros said he can travel anywhere in the nation and see San Antonio’s name splashed across television screens and newspapers thanks to the Spurs.

``The Spurs were an asset in everything from tourism, an increase in downtown crowds and the downtown revitalization,‘’ Cisneros said.

Drossos long dreamed of bringing professional sports to San Antonio. Before purchasing the Spurs, he attempted to gain a franchise in the World Soccer League in 1972.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to Mr. Drossos. We need to recognize his accomplishments,'' said Dr. Damaso Oliva, an investor in the failed WSL bid and one of the first Spurs season-ticket holders. He always was interested in bringing high quality professional sports to San Antonio.‘’

Drossos’ interest in sports dated back to his childhood days in San Antonio. He competed in basketball and football and boxed.

Trinity assistant basketball coach Joe Cortez first met Drossos when both attended Central Catholic High School in the 1940s. Cortez, then a freshman, had fond memories of the ``Golden Greek,‘’ as his senior classmate called himself.

He had a lot of self-confidence, as opposed to athletic ability,'' Cortez remembered. He was always a lot of fun.‘’

Cortez, who coached Central Catholic for 36 years before retiring in 1995, credits Drossos with building a foundation for the city’s success in high school basketball. San Antonio-area schools have won two state titles and appeared in a total of 12 state finals since 1978.

We owe Angelo a debt of gratitude, especially local basketball coaches and those who love the game of basketball,'' said Cortez, the winningest high school coach in the city's history. Basketball became a strong point of our community as a result of Angelo’s efforts of bringing the Spurs to San Antonio.‘’

Drossos didn’t want local youths to simply watch the game, he pushed to make sure they got to experience it firsthand.

When he brought the Spurs to San Antonio, he helped the community by establishing a summer camp for youngsters in spite of the many rules and regulations of the UIL,'' Cortez said. He had that courage to start the camps and it helped introduced the game of basketball to players at a much younger age than had been before. He got us going.‘’

But above his love for the city and its people, Drossos had a passion for the Spurs.

For a stockbroker who didn't know much about basketball, he did a heckuva job,'' said Roger Zeller, chairman emeritus of locally based Columbia Industries, one of the original owners of the San Antonio Spurs. The only reason the Spurs are in the NBA is because of Angelo’s persistence. He wanted the team to be in the mainstream and play against the best.‘’

He just worked very hard for the Spurs,'' former Mayor Lila Cockrell said. He was so enthusiastic. He inspired others to be a part of the Spurs support group. He was just a person who was fun and interesting. We have missed his leadership and presence in the city.‘’

(Angelo Drossos)

Angelo Drossos

Oct. 31, 1928-Jan. 9, 1997 Drossos, who steered Spurs to San Antonio, dies at 68.

Angelo Drossos, considered the father of professional basketball in San Antonio, died late Thursday after a long illness.

He was 68.

Drossos, a highly successful businessman, is most famous for bringing a pro basketball club to San Antonio. He will be remembered as the man who put San Antonio in the big leagues, the man who led the push into the NBA, the man who signed David Robinson to a contract when many doubted he could.

The entrepreneur first fell ill in 1988, attacked by a disease eventually diagnosed as progressive supra nuclear palsy.

He fought it for as long as he could,'' his son John said Friday. He’s in a better place now.‘’

A memorial service is scheduled at 7 p.m. Sunday at Porter Loring Mortuary. The funeral is set for 10 a.m. Monday at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church on North St. Mary’s Street.

In addition to his son, Drossos leaves his wife, Lillie, and his daughter, Debbie, 35.

``It was only through the personal commitment and determination of Angelo Drossos that the San Antonio Spurs were able to become a member of the NBA,‘’ NBA commissioner David Stern said Friday.

Drossos was born Oct. 31, 1928. A native of San Antonio, he graduated from Central Catholic High School and St. Mary’s University.

His trail to the NBA wound through a variety of ventures. His father owned the Coney Island restaurant and bar.

Angelo’s first contact with the paying public was asking them whether they wanted mustard on their hot dogs.

He spent his first 15 years out of college promoting and managing boxers. He also operated, bought and sold bars and restaurants, then sold automobiles. For a short time he was also a dance instructor at an Arthur Murray studio.

He also was financially able in the world of investments. He got his broker’s license in 1962, gave up his other interests, and went whole hog into the world of stocks and bonds.

He eventually became a vice president with Dean Witter and remained with that company until he retired in 1993 when his health began fading seriously.

The road to victories in first the American Basketball Association and then the National Basketball Association was a long and arduous one. But it was laced with the true history of professional basketball.

Drossos led a group of businessmen who ``rented’’ the ABA basketball team, the Dallas Chaparrals, and brought it to San Antonio in the summer of 1973.

Jack Pitluk telephoned and told me that if I was interested in having a basketball team, the Dallas Chaparrals were available,'' Drossos once said. I guess he figured I was interested in sports because of my connections to boxing. But I had never heard of the Chaparrals.‘’

Nevertheless, the future glories of George Gervin and David Robinson in San Antonio were spawned by that phone call.

The deal was that Drossos and his group, which included San Antonio businessman Red McCombs, would invest about $800,000 to rent the Chaps for two years. But the team attracted enough attention to urge the investment group to expand from 20 to 35 members and purchase the Chaps outright after just one year.

That ownership group would expand to as many as 65 when the Spurs were later merged into the ABA.

McCombs once recalled that he started getting cold feet about the early venture into the ABA but that Drossos was ``gung ho’’ and persuaded him to stick with it. Drossos offered to run the team for no salary and McCombs noted that Drossos worked day and night to learn the basketball business.

He learned well. He ran the team until he sold his interest for $17 million in 1987 and he said the team lost money in only one year, 1977.

George Karl, now coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, was the first player signed by Drossos. David Robinson would become the last player he signed.

Drossos’ major player signings during the 1970s included George Gervin and Swen Nater. Those two put the Spurs on the basketball map.

Drossos borrowed $300,000 to purchase Gervin’s contract from the Virginia Squires.

``The officers at the Frost Bank said they hoped I knew what I was doing,‘’ Drossos said a few years ago.

The Gervin deal was unique. ABA commissioner Mike Storen ruled Gervin had a contract with the Spurs, but still would play with the Squires. He wanted Gervin to stay in Virginia.

Drossos struck hard and fast. He told Gervin he would have federal marshals haul him off the court if he played in another game for Virginia. The case eventually was heard in a federal court in San Antonio and the decision went the Spurs’ way.

Angelo was a go-getter,'' Gervin once said. He told me from the beginning that it was a business to him and the object of business was to make money.‘’

The second player Drossos signed was Bird Averitt from Pepperdine.

I didn't know anything about basketball so I took the guy to Trinity, put him on the court and was amazed by his flashiness,'' Drossos recalled. I turned to his agent and said, I can see the headline now. Bird flies in San Antonio.' He said, Blackbird flies in San Antonio.’ I said, `no way.’ ‘’

Owning a basketball team elevated Drossos to something akin to celebrity status. With the publicity came the advisers.

We had rabid fans,'' Drossos said. They called me constantly. I had to put in a separate line for the basketball so I could have one free for my regular work.‘’

After he settled the ABA into San Antonio, Drossos’ next major undertaking was piloting the merger of the ABA with the NBA.

``Everybody in the world wanted the ABA to go away,‘’ recalled former Spurs public relations director Wayne Witt.

But Drossos was a hard-headed negotiator. He went to a hotel in Hyannis Port, Mass., and led the ABA negotiating team in 1976. The NBA owners already had voted to keep the ABA teams out of their league but Drossos’ threat of an antitrust lawsuit kept negotiations alive.

The NBA wanted ABA teams to pay $4.5 million to join the older league. Drossos considered the amount too high. After hours of negotiations, Drossos figured he had lost and was prepared to return to San Antonio and press his action in court.

``But I got a call in the middle of the night. I went up stairs in my stocking feet and Mike Burke, owner of the Knicks, said, `Welcome to the NBA,’ ‘’ Drossos said.

Four ABA teams - San Antonio, Denver, Indiana and New Jersey - were allowed to join the older league for a $3.2 million entry fee. Drossos gathered the necessary finances by selling more shares in the Spurs and the number of investors jumped from 35 to 63.

``I think one of the reasons the NBA accepted us was that they realized San Antonio had a strong leader in Angelo,‘’ said Maury Holden, the Spurs’ secretary-treasurer from 1973 to 1990.

Drossos became one of the most active owners in the NBA, a whirling dervish. He got himself on nearly every committee, television, finance and advertising. He would walk from one meeting to another.

I always felt like one of those church guys,'' he once said. You know, you kind of laugh at those guys but the church doesn’t work without them.‘’

One of Drossos’ first orders of business was persuading the old league to adopt the three-point shot, thought amateurish by many NBA minds. The shot was accepted, but not without a fight.

Boston’s Red Auerbach was bitterly opposed to the three-pointer and Drossos later said acceptance of the shot was the only time he got the best of the legendary redhead.

During my speech in favor of the shot, he (Red) was giving me some sort of signal, with his hand in the crook of his arm,'' Drossos said. I asked him later what it meant and he said, `It’s the same signal the old man gave his family when they asked him where the money was.’ ‘’

Drossos led the push for a salary cap and a revenue sharing plan that resolved the conflicts with the league’s players’ union. He pioneered the idea of incentive contracts and paid players bonuses based on the number of victories in a season.

He led the local battle to get the Spurs involved in cable television, expanded the advertising campaigns, raised the roof of the Convention Center Arena to increase its seating capacity and purchased a state-of-the-art scoreboard that included television screens for viewing by the fans in the upper-level seats.

I've always figured that owners can manage their franchises without a salary cap,'' said Lee Fentress, agent for David Robinson. But Angelo worked in a small market and he had a different financial situation.‘’

The signing of Robinson was the final feather in Drossos’ cap. The tall center from the Naval Academy could have opted to sign with another team after he completed his military obligation. But Drossos knew he needed the 7-foot-1 Robinson to keep the franchise in San Antonio.

Angelo's objective was to sign David,'' Fentress said. There were a couple of times when he lost sight of that objective. But we just took some breaks, for about 20 minutes or so, and then we went back at it.‘’

Robinson had flown to San Antonio by charter plane to look over San Antonio after the Spurs chose him as their No. 1 pick. But Robinson’s 6-foot-5 brother, Chuck, was the first one off the plane.

I looked at him and figured, Well, I got taken by that height thing again,‘’ Drossos joked at the time.

Drossos sold his interest in the Spurs to McCombs May 27, 1988, for $17 million. McCombs said at the time that the team needed to take a new direction.

Before McCombs’ purchase, Drossos and McCombs had listened to several offers from out-of-towners.

Drossos’ financial acumen was demonstrated early on. As a stockbroker, he advised his clients to purchase a stock listed at 2. They did, and dipped in again when it was at 20, 30 and 40. They sold at 90. The stock was Datapoint.

Drossos also invested in films and made serious profits in some, including Alien,'' and suffered losses in others, such as Rhinestone Cowboy.‘’

Like many other Texas investors, he put money into and pulled money out of oil wells. Drossos said he ``put in about $250,000 and we hit oil in the first 21 wells we dug.‘’

McCombs loses a `loyal friend’ - Local bar encounter launches a lifelong bond with Drossos

It was January 1958 when Red McCombs, then an aspiring young car salesman two days removed from Corpus Christi, wandered into the Dragon Lady on Main Street looking for a drink. It was there that McCombs met Angelo Drossos for the first time. What McCombs, his liver tested and his wallet lightened, didn’t know when he emerged from the club hours later was that their bond - born over liquor and an arm-wrestling match - would span a lifetime. Nor did McCombs know he and Drossos would forever change San Antonio 15 years later when they purchased a struggling American Basketball Association franchise called the Dallas Chaparrals.

No, McCombs said he learned two things from his first encounter with Drossos: It cost him money and it gave him a new friend. And close to 40 years later, McCombs said he will remember Drossos, who died late Thursday night at 68, as just that - a friend.

He was always a friend and in no way can I ever replace him,'' McCombs said. He was a very loyal friend. It is a sad day, but it also gives us the chance to celebrate the effect Angelo had on so many people.‘’

It was Drossos who convinced McCombs to help purchase the Chaparrals, who later became the San Antonio Spurs. It also was Drossos who paved the way for McCombs to buy the Denver Nuggets in 1982 when Drossos helped create the NBA’s salary cap. And, of course, it was Drossos who sold his controlling interest in the Spurs to McCombs in May 1988.

The two also were linked together in 25 other business ventures. And even though there were times when the pair fought over their dealings, McCombs maintains the arguments never put a strain on the personal relationship that began in '58 when McCombs walked into that club owned by Drossos.

I was drinking pretty good and Angelo and another guy were arm wrestling when I decided I needed to have some of that,'' McCombs said. Well Angelo set me up by letting me win two or three times. So I put some money down and he beat me really bad.

``I knew I had been set up, but instead of getting mad, I just laughed it off and called him a son of a b----. . . We formed a great relationship that night.‘’

McCombs’ wife Charline and his children moved to San Antonio shortly after that and Drossos, who was single, quickly became an extended member of the family. When Drossos did marry his wife, Lillie, McCombs was the best man at the Houston wedding.

I remember after this Greek party in Dallas one weekend, Angelo opened the door to the hotel room and - screaming like hell - announced to me and Charline that he was going to marry Lillie,'' McCombs said. He was just going crazy, jumping around and everything. He even knocked the light off the ceiling. He said he was going to marry Lillie and that she didn’t know it, but he was going to do it.‘’

In the early ‘60s, Drossos went to work for McCombs at the Ford dealership on San Pedro. Charlie Thomas, a friend of McCombs’ who bought the Houston Rockets in '82, also worked at the dealership and the three would spend their time off at the Dragon Lady, discussing the Texas Longhorns and a young coach named Darrell Royal.

We never dreamed we would all become NBA owners,'' Thomas said. We were just making a living. We had a good time. We worked hard and we enjoyed what we were doing.

``But the thing about Angelo was that he always was optimistic. He could see things happening before they happened.‘’

Drossos convinced McCombs to invest in the Chaparrals after McCombs became leery of the deal. Drossos also spearheaded the drive to merge the ABA and NBA and, when it appeared like the Spurs would not be among the four teams invited to join the league, McCombs said Drossos ``browbeat’’ the other owners until San Antonio was included.

We would have never gotten into the NBA without Angelo, period,'' McCombs said. I never really had any hope we could get into the NBA, but Angelo was able to engineer the deal.

``He was a tough businessman, but a fair man. He was an excellent negotiator. Angelo always believed you could find some way to make a deal.‘’

McCombs said the two often disagreed on what coaches to fire or hire and which players to acquire. And when McCombs didn’t like the direction the team was headed in '88, it led him to buy out Drossos.

Angelo was very, very opinionated and we had cuss fights over every issue in the world,'' McCombs said. But he always remained my friend.‘’

Remembering the softer sides to Angelo

Nobody calls pneumonia a gift from God, but it was that disease that finally took the life of Angelo Drossos late Friday night, releasing him from the grip of a much more horrible illness that slowly sabotaged his body ever since the summer of 1988. The official medical name for the uncommon, incurable sickness is progressive supra nuclear palsy.

It most certainly is progressive. And it’s also sneaky. Two trips to the Mayo Clinic failed to reveal Angelo’s problem. But his balance went bad and he often fell while playing tennis or golf.

Our friendship went back 40 years, so we often ribbed each other with cruel taunts while competing against each other for small wagers. We played singles tennis every Saturday morning. On one hot afternoon in '88, he fell twice on the concrete court.

I explained that he just couldn’t handle my swift head and hand fakes. We both laughed, but more falls the next week were devoid of any laughter.

It wasn’t until October 1990 that doctors at Johns Hopkins correctly diagnosed the palsy that was to devour Drossos’ large, once-impressive body and put terrible strains on Lillie, his attentive wife.

The palsy worked through the brain, destroying eyesight, speech and movement. But right to the end, Angelo’s mind stayed clear and he understood every word and whisper around him.

For newcomers to our city, and the few here who’ve never had any interest in basketball, Angelo is the man who brought the Spurs to San Antonio.

A stockbroker by trade, he knocked on many expensive doors and often cooled his heels for hours, waiting to make his pitch to potential investors.

But even after he and a group of 55 moved the Dallas Chaparrals of the old ABA here, it was a tough financial struggle to keep the franchise afloat. In time, Angelo became an unpopular owner, one who saved dollars and pinched pennies.

But he had to pinch pennies because there never were any dollars to save. His driving ambition was to get his Spurs into the NBA with the big boys.

It took him a few more years to accomplish that goal, then he became a driving force on the NBA’s board of governors, strong enough to put the ABA’s three-point shot into the NBA.

He did that all by himself, carefully wooing colleagues to his side, then pushing the pluses of three-pointers over the strong objections of such basketball traditionalists as Red Auerbach.

He was known to many as a hard-nosed, no-nonsense businessman, often gruff and sometimes rude. Over the years, he and I had our ups and downs - including a few shouting matches - but they never amounted to much.

There was a soft, fun-loving side to Angelo that only his closest friends saw. But he rarely revealed that attitude to those he did business with.

On one occasion, however, he let his guard slip in that area and it cost him.

He was negotiating a contract with the agent of a key player. It was a telephone conversation, but the agent was coming to San Antonio the next day. After learning the man liked to play tennis, Angelo made him an offer.

``You write down the amount of money you honestly feel your player deserves and I’ll write a figure that I feel is right. We’ll meet for lunch at the San Antonio Country Club and then play one set of tennis. We’ll use the salary figure of whoever wins the tennis match.‘’

That was Angelo’s offer.

The agent, an honest man, replied: ``Angelo, I don’t think you really want to do that. You see . . .‘’

Drossos interrupted: ``Yes, I do want to do it. I’ll meet your plane tomorrow morning and be sure to bring your tennis racket.‘’

And they played, too.

Angelo, who once promoted a few boxing matches here and even managed one fighter, stayed pretty well versed on all sports.

But he had somehow overlooked the name of Donald Dell as a former world-ranked tennis pro who had competed in Grand Slam tournaments, including Wimbledon.

Dell was the agent who Angelo challenged, so there’s no need to tell you that Drossos gave one Spurs player a nice raise against his better judgment.

Last year, Angelo and I were proudly inducted together into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. His son, John, accepted for him. It was an honor neither of us would have dreamed possible 30 years ago when we first began competing against each other.

I still have doubts about the votes for me.

I did, however, long ago beat Angelo out of $20 by jumping farther out of a high-flying swing at Brackenridge Park. It was a hall-of- fame jump that almost busted my back, but I had to win. I only had $10 in my pocket.

The next day he confessed that he only had $15 when he made that $20 wager.

We’ve made a lot of trails together. Monday morning at 10 a.m., we’ll make our last one.

Albeck, Drossos ended bitter feud long ago

ATLANTA - Stan Albeck left the Spurs 14 years ago, angry and bitter at the way he had been treated after coaching the team to three Midwest Division titles. A day after his team lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1983 Western Conference finals, word leaked that he wanted to pursue negotiations to coach the New Jersey Nets.

Despite pushing his Spurs to within two victories of the NBA Finals, Albeck wasn’t happy. He didn’t like the way team owner Angelo Drossos was handling certain things.

Albeck wanted another assistant coach. Drossos turned thumbs-down on the idea. Albeck thought his contract with the Spurs had expired. Drossos disagreed, and he sued to protect the team’s rights.

Drossos, the man credited with making pro basketball successful in San Antonio, died Thursday after a long bout with progressive supra nuclear palsy. Always a fighter, Drossos, 68, couldn’t beat the latest complication -pneumonia.

Albeck, now an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, learned of Drossos’ death - ironically - on the day he traveled to scout a Spurs-Pistons game Friday night in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Albeck confirmed the two patched up their differences long ago. Albeck said his relationship with Drossos had done ``a 360’’ since they warred over financial decisions and player-personnel moves in the early 1980s.

It was a bitter feud that went to court. Albeck eventually was allowed to coach the Nets. But Drossos exacted some revenge, negotiating a deal that forced the Nets to pay $300,000 and give up the rights to forward Fred Roberts.

A few years back, the war of wills finally ended. Albeck and Drossos started to meet regularly, and Albeck said they soon came to a truce about their differences.

As a longtime San Antonio resident, Albeck would pick up his former boss at his home on Saturday mornings, and the two would drive to a coffee shop where they discussed the NBA.

I was happy to help him get out,'' Albeck said. And he liked to talk basketball.‘’

Sometimes, the chats turned to the tumultuous times when the two engaged in heated arguments.

Out of the whole thing, we sat down and admitted our mistakes,'' Albeck said. We were just two hardheaded people.‘’

Drossos, a hard-line businessman who battled to keep the Spurs afloat financially in San Antonio, had a softer side.

He was always interested in my family, what my kids were doing,'' Albeck said. On the outside, his persona was the tough negotiator. But he was really a warm and sensitive person. He just had a personality where he didn’t want anyone to know it.‘’

-Enough is enough: In an interview with writers in New York last week, Gregg Popovich described his dual role as the Spurs’ general manager and coach as ``a crazy proposition,‘’ and said he would give up one of the positions next season.

``It will last through the season, and that’s it,‘’ he said.

When pressed on the subject after the Spurs’ game at Detroit on Friday night, Popovich declined to discuss the comment. Nor would he talk about which job he would like to keep. Popovich reportedly has two years remaining on his contract after this season.

-Tough decision: Popovich didn’t want to part with power forward Stephen Howard, signed by the Spurs out of the CBA.

Howard could post up and hit a big shot, even in limited playing time. He drew fouls, went to the line and made 90 percent of his free throws.

Unfortunately, the Spurs were forced to waive him, along with guard Gaylon Nickerson, on Monday.

The Spurs already have 13 guaranteed contracts. Howard would have been No. 14, and he wasn’t deemed good enough for the team to make the commitment.

He helped us,'' Popovich said. He did a good job. But is he a guy to keep for the season? I don’t know. He may be a guy you go back to sometime in the future.‘’
