Spurs praise De’Aaron Fox for ‘A-plus’ defense on Kyrie Irving
Victor Wembanyama had a career night with 52 points and 24 rebounds, but the Spurs needed some strong defense by De’Aaron Fox in the final seconds to pull out a 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.
Fox knew he had his work cut out for him when he found himself nose to nose with Kyrie Irving at the top of the key with 10 seconds left and the Spurs leading by a point before a sellout crowd of 18,354 at the Frost Bank Center.
“He’s one of the toughest covers ever,” Fox said of the nine-time All-Star and holder of the venue’s single-game scoring record.
Fortunately for the Spurs, Fox was more than up to the difficult task against one of the NBA’s all-time clutch performers.
Irving started his dribble with about 7 seconds left, but Fox shadowed him at every turn and contested the shot strongly at the end, forcing Irving to miss badly on a 15-foot turnaround jumper with 2.5 seconds left.
Dylan Harper then beat Naji Marshall for the rebound as the Spurs held on to improve to 6-2 with their sixth win in a row and second of the season against the Mavericks (4-4).
Fox, who finished with 10 points and four assists, said he thought back to the days when “you play on-one-on and there’s no help” as he faced off with Irving, who finished with a team-high 29 points on an inefficient 9-of-27 shooting from the field.
“Just trying to press up, try to make him uncomfortable, which is a hard thing to do,” Fox said. “You just try to force a tough shot because you know he’s going to be able to create a shot. You just want to make it a shot he wants less than whatever he’s thinking at the time. Then contest it.”
Irving, who scored 57 points for Cleveland against the Spurs at the Frost in March 2015, admitted Fox bothered him just enough.
“I felt I got a good look and had my legs underneath me as well,” Irving said. “D Fox did a great job of bumping me off my spot.”
Fox also received praise from his coach and teammates.
“There may not be a scarier guy with the basketball in his hands in that moment,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “That feels unguardable and he’s going to get a very high-quality shot up. So for De’Aaron to be on an island then guard a few moves off the dribble and then stay down on a shot fake and then contest without fouling, yeah, it’s an A-plus effort.”
Wembanyama agreed.
“He was great,” the French superstar said. “He did everything he was supposed to do. I’m really glad Dylan got that last rebound. That was a great possession from start to finish.”
