https://twitter.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2116724517401714726/video/1— Spurs Nation (@Spurs_Nation) November 1, 2026
https://twitter.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2116744162934681650/video/1— Spurs Nation (@Spurs_Nation) November 1, 2026

3 Takeaways as Victor Wembanyama’s 43 points tames Timberwolves

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) dunks the ball at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026. The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 121-111.
In San Antonio, the Spurs’ offensive philosophy is no different than it is in 29 other NBA cities.
“We want to just try to make sure we can get the best shot in every possession,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
It helps, of course, when one of the best shots available is a 7-foot-4 wunderkind catching lob after lob at the rim.
The Spurs spent much of Saturday night finding Victor Wembanyama in precisely those spots, feeding their star center a steady diet of passes near the basket.
Wembanyama returned the favor with a 43-point eruption in the Spurs’ 121-111 Halloween night victory over Minnesota, the second-highest scoring game of his career — surpassed only by the 50 points he dumped on Washington in November 2024.
The 34 field goals Wembanyama attempted were a career high. It marked only the third time in three-plus seasons he put up at least 30 shots.
He made half of them and added six blocks on the other end for good measure.
“I think that we’ve seen a young man over three-plus years now who has matured physically, he’s matured emotionally, he’s matured mentally, he’s put a lot of hard work in,” Johnson said.
Dylan Harper scored 25 points, a career high for the regular season, while De’Aaron Fox chipped in a season-best 22 as the Spurs rolled to their fourth consecutive victory after opening the season 0-2.
Missing a pair of prominent starters in All-Star guard Anthony Edwards and defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert, and playing the second night of a back-to-back, the Timberwolves simply didn’t have enough firepower to keep pace.
Ayo Dosunmu led Minnesota with 27 points, while Jalen McDaniels and Jonathan Kuminga supplied 19 apiece.
Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s win, which improved the Spurs to 4-2 heading into Monday’s rematch with Utah at the Frost Bank Center.
1. Credit Wemby’s teammates for his big night
Wembanyama attempted more shots Saturday than he ever has in an NBA game. That doesn’t mean he spent the evening playing solo.
Most of the All-Star center’s damage came in playing off of teammates in the pick and roll, running the floor and finishing lobs.
“Vic’s probably the best roller ever to play the game,” Fox said. “Probably the best lob threat ever.”
Sometimes — but not all the time — it can be just that simple.

Fox, Harper and Castle all found Wembanyama for easy dunks Saturday. Wembanyama also found himself once, tossing the ball off the glass to finish an alley-oop in the first half.
Wembanyama was a dominant two-way force against Minnesota, becoming the first Spurs player since David Robinson in 1996 to record at least 40 points and five blocks in the same game.
He scored 24 points in the first half, becoming the first player to post three consecutive 20-point first halves in more than a quarter of a century.
Tim Duncan last accomplished that feat in January 2001.
What Johnson liked the best was that the second-highest scoring night of Wembanyama’s NBA life came within the flow of the team game.
“When he plays with his teammates, it really causes a problem for the other team,” Johnson said. “We have a lot of talent, this league has a lot of talent. And the best players in this league, when they play with their teammates, it’s damn near impossible at times.”
It certainly helped that Minnesota was missing Gobert, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
Wembanyama worked over Gobert’s French backup, a promising young center named Joan Beringer.
After scoring a career-high 25 points, Harper talks about his mindset:
“When I’m on the floor alone without (Fox and Castle) that’s my time to attack the defense and it’s kind of my job to get my teammates involved.” https://twitter.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2116724517401714726/video/1— Spurs Nation (@Spurs_Nation) November 1, 2026
2. Backcourt delivers, even with Castle running on empty
Two-thirds of the Spurs’ three-headed backcourt monster had a field day Saturday.
Stephon Castle, meanwhile, had a night he’d probably prefer to forget. He finished 0-for-4 with three turnovers, marking just the third scoreless outing of his NBA career.
The 21-year-old at least had a doctor’s note excusing his poor performance.
Castle had been battling a migraine for much of the afternoon and was considered a game-time decision against Minnesota. Johnson gave Castle credit simply for showing up at all.
“A lot of people wouldn’t have went into work if they were feeling like Steph Castle was,” Johnson said. “Steph Castle clocked in for work tonight and we needed every second of it.”
That the Spurs’ backcourt was still able to account for 47 points despite Castle’s goose egg points to the depth the team has at that position.
Special hat tip to Fox, who not only produced his first 20-point game of the season but also led the team in assists (seven) and rebounds (eight). Harper, meanwhile, burst for 10 of his points during the third-quarter surge that helped the Spurs gain control of the game.
De’Aaron Fox on his night against the T-Wolves (22 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists).
“Our offense looks great when we’re making them chase the ball.” https://twitter.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2116744162934681650/video/1— Spurs Nation (@Spurs_Nation) November 1, 2026
Fox said he and the rest of the Spurs were proud to pick up the slack for their ailing backcourt mate.
“For him to come out and still give us what he had, that’s big,” Fox said of Castle. “We don’t expect anything less from him. Whatever he has in the tank, he’s willing to give it.”
3. Spurs’ new toy still in the shop
Compared to other contenders in the NBA, the Spurs have been relatively lucky on the injury front this season.
They are still waiting, however, for the silver and black debut of Tobias Harris, the veteran forward who signed to a two-year, $31-million free-agent deal in the summer.
Harris, 34, has been sidelined since training camp with a left calf strain. The Spurs had hoped he might be ready to return soon, but a Friday afternoon workout at the team’s practice facility prompted them to temper expectations regarding his timetable.
“We need to just be patient and make sure we get it all the way right and get him all the way right in terms of being ready to prepare to play an NBA game at the style of play that we want,” Johnson said before the game. “It’s just taking it very, very methodically, I think, which is appropriate.”
According to the team, there has been no setback with Harris in terms of the injury itself. He is laboring through the ramp-up process and slowly regaining strength in his calf muscle.
“It’s a calf strain, and that’s a thing that we’ve seen can be tricky,” Johnson said. “I think the medical (team) has done a great job of trying to keep him engaged and trying to continue to progress in the right direction, but at the same time, being patient and not getting ahead of ourselves.”
