Dylan Harper ‘stay positive’ no matter how Spurs use him
San Antonio Spurs guards Stephon Castle (5), De’Aaron Fox (4) and Dylan Harper (2) pose for photos during the NBA team’s media day at the Victory Capital Performance Center in San Antonio, Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.
How Mitch Johnson plans to use second-year guard Dylan Harper this season after his dynamic performance in the playoff ranks as one of the biggest story lines heading into the start of training camp on Tuesday.
The Spurs coach didn’t shed much light on the topic at media day Monday, but he did reveal he wants Harper and the team’s other two rim-attacking guards, All-Star De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, on the court together more this season.
“I see all three of them playing together,” Johnson said. “I don’t know the definition of ‘a lot more,’ but I think more than we did in the regular season (in 2025-26) for sure.”
Harper came off the bench last season while Fox and Castle started, but many observers believe he should have a bigger role this season after his strong play against New York in the Finals. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft scored 21 points off the bench in Game 4 against the Knicks to become the youngest player at age 20 years and 100 days old to score 20-plus points in NBA history.
Harper followed up that performance by scoring 25 points in Game 5. The Spurs, however lost both games as they fell to New York in five games.
“Everyone has a competitive edge to them, but the biggest thing for me is whatever I can do just like last year to help the team win, and whatever position that all the coaches think is best for me to be in, that’s the position I have going,” he said. “So whatever happens this year, just know that ain’t going to be no bad nothing for me. I’m always going to stay positive and I’m always going to be at the forefront of just keeping the team together.”
Fox said he’s all in on Johnson’s plan to play him, Harper and Castle together more.
“I definitely expect to see it more,” he said.
Castle downplayed speculation about who will start, calling it “pretty much all outside noise for us.”
“Whoever starts, whoever doesn’t start, we all start together, I think we’ll be fine either way,” he said. “I feel like we’re three high-level guards that are pretty unselfish that can touch the paint whenever. And, yeah, I think just being able to play off each other as much as we can, whether we have to have two of us on the court, three of us on the court, I think we’ll figure it out and it’ll continue to grow as it did last year.”
