Why the Spurs are cutting the cable cord, heading to DAZN in 2026-27

Image
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) gets a dunk during the third quarter of Game 2 of the NBA Championship at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Friday, June 5, 2026. Wembanyama and the Spurs have a new home for distributing their games for the 2026-27 season as the team announced a partnership with global streaming platform DAZN.

For decades, watching the Spurs on a nightly basis meant finding the right channel on the cable box.

Beginning with the upcoming season, following the exploits of Victor Wembanyama and Co. will instead mean finding the right app on your smart TVs, mobile devices, web browsers and game consoles.

Joining the growing migration away from regional sports networks, the Spurs on Wednesday announced a partnership with the international streaming service DAZN to distribute the bulk of the team’s locally televised broadcasts in 2026-27.

DAZN (pronounced da-zone) will stream every game on the Spurs’ schedule not exclusively selected for national broadcast — a total of 67 regular-season contests and all five preseason tilts.

“Partnering with DAZN gives Spurs fans an easy and innovative platform to follow Spurs game action and additional behind-the-scenes highlights,” said Frank Miceli, chief commercial officer at Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “We’re excited to work with DAZN to deliver an engaging viewer experience beginning with the 2026-27 season.”

The Spurs’ move to streaming comes as the traditional regional sports network model continues to unravel, reshaping how fans watch games — and how teams sell them.

FanDuel Sports held the Spurs’ local broadcast rights last season, replacing Bally Sports, which had replaced Fox Sports Southwest through a string of buyouts and rebrands.

Late in 2025, FanDuel’s parent company — Main Street Sports — began running out of cash, missing payments to nine Major League Baseball teams, who subsequently terminated their contracts with the company.

In April, Main Street informed remaining NBA and National Hockey League teams it would wind down operations at the completion of their seasons. That left 13 NBA teams looking for new local broadcast arrangements for 2026-27.

The Spurs filled that void with DAZN.

Headquartered in London, DAZN initially rose to prominence as a streaming leader for international sports, specializing in boxing, soccer, MMA and motorsports.

With the American local sports broadcasting business in the throes of a seismic shift, DAZN is positioning itself to capture a bigger piece of the market.

In addition to the Spurs, the Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers have recently announced deals to partner with DAZN as their teams’ direct-to-consumer streaming home.

The New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards have deals with DAZN to distribute their already existing in-house networks.

Calling the Spurs “an iconic sports brand with deep roots in their community,” DAZN Group chief executive officer Shay Segev said his company looks forward to the partnership.

“DAZN’s partnership with the Spurs is another important step in our strategy to build the leading entertainment destination for sports fans in the United States,” Segev said. “The Spurs share our commitment to innovation and fan engagement, and together we look forward to bringing Spurs basketball and premium team content to local fans."

According to a news release announcing the deal, DAZN plans to deliver “live Spurs games alongside additional content, giving fans expanded access to pre- and post-game shows, highlights, behind-the-scenes storytelling and original programming that brings fans closer to the team.”

The Spurs will oversee and manage the full production of all games.

The DAZN deal moves most Spurs broadcasts off traditional cable, where viewership has steadily eroded as millions of consumers have cut the cord over the past decade.

The Spurs will still offer 22 games over-the-air through a still-to-be-determined local broadcast partner, the team says.

The team says DAZN will also distribute select programming from other clubs under Sports Sports & Entertainment umbrella, including San Antonio FC matches and NBA G League Austin Spurs games.

Think Netflix, but pick-and-pay: Spurs fans can subscribe to the team’s “channel” without buying the rest of DAZN’s lineup.

The subscription service is set to launch in the coming weeks and will be available throughout the Spurs’ home broadcast market, including full covering across Central, South and West Texas.

Once available, fans can try a free seven-day trial before choosing a subscription. A monthly pass will be available for a low price point of $19.99, with a season-pass running $119.99.

Those who become Official Spurs Fan Club members by Sept. 9 will be eligible for an exclusive discount.

By Mike Finger | San Antonio Express-News (SAEN), 2026-09-02 16:05:52

Image

Spurs streaming plan tests the price of NBA fan loyalty, connections

Image
Spurs Jackals cheer with fans before Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, May 28, 2026.

Monday morning, The Athletic published a column asking a question.

“The NBA’s never been more flush with cash,” the headline read. “But is it losing its connection to its fans?”

Two days later, the Spurs issued a press release providing another piece of the answer.

In brief: Fans might not be losing their connection to the league. But more and more these days, they’re having to pay for it.

To be clear, there’s nothing singularly outrageous about the Spurs’ decision to move 67 regular-season games to a subscription streaming service called DAZN, with only 22 local broadcasts set to be carried over the air. Most NBA franchises now have an arrangement that looks at least something like this.

But at a time when it’s never been more expensive to attend games in person, and in an era where even terrible owners are making billions of dollars simply by buying pro franchises, watching them appreciate in value, then flipping them to someone else, it’s hard to blame any viewers who saw Wednesday’s news and threw their hands in the air.

Hardcore fans won’t think twice about downloading yet another app and forking over an extra $19.99 plus tax every month in hopes that it won’t glitch out in the fourth quarter. But what of the more casual, channel-surfing, “I’ll watch the game if it’s on” crowd? What of the, “I already subscribe to seven streaming services and I’ll be danged if I’m adding an eighth” group?

Maybe you can run a successful pro sports league forever without those people. But it sure seems like the NBA is running the risk of missing out on another generation of them.

Now, here is where we acknowledge some important caveats. First, it should be noted that this happened only after the old regional sports network model, which paid teams huge broadcast fees that were covered by cable subscribers whether or not they watched basketball, fell apart. There was no option to bring games back to semi-basic cable again.

We also should point out that the Spurs have 34 regular-season games set for national TV, and you won’t need to subscribe to DAZN to watch those. Then if, the 22 over-the-air games (think of the ones on KENS-TV in recent years) are all separate from the national TV selections, that means there could be as few as 26 games that are available only on DAZN.

That’s about a third of the season. On one hand, that’s a pretty big number for those accustomed to watching everything. On the other, it might not be big enough to convince the casual fans that adding DAZN is an absolute necessity.

Chances are, you’re going to lose some people. With every move like this, that’s part of the risk. The more often a fan says, “Oh, looks like I can’t watch that one,” the more likely he or she is to realize that, well, there are other things to watch. Or to scroll. Or even to read, if you’re truly ancient.

And how many average folks will be able to watch every Spurs game this season? To do so, some cord-cutters would have to subscribe to as many as four different services (DAZN, Amazon Prime Video, ESPN/ABC, and NBC/Peacock). As recently as last season, a typical cable bundle covered everything except for the handful of Prime games.

One bright side is that there will be more Spurs games available on free, over-the-air TV than there were five or 10 years ago. The catch there is that there won’t be nearly as many of those as there are in places like Phoenix and Utah, where the Suns and Jazz are among the teams who have decided to make the bulk of their team-broadcast inventory available through local broadcasters.

There’s a tradeoff there, though: With more fans tuning in, that means more revenue can be made through advertising. But that still might not be enough to offset what can be generated through exclusive streaming subscriptions (which also, of course, are filled with cheaper advertisements).

The Spurs apparently weighed all their options and decided that, as they look for ways to cover forthcoming contract extensions for Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, the subscription model had more financial upside. And maybe they’re right.

But don’t get this twisted. It isn’t an upgrade for anybody. It doesn’t make your entertainment bills cheaper. It certainly doesn’t make the viewing experience better (ever try to flip back and forth between games using two different smart TV applications?). And it can’t be the best way to win over new converts.

Instead, it’s about a league flush with cash maximizing value from the fan connections it already has.

And assuming those connections will last.

By Eric Fritts | Pounding The Rock (PtR), 2026-09-03 09:45:00

Spurs officially announce DAZN as exclusive broadcaster

The San Antonio Spurs have officially announced DAZN as their exclusive media rights partner for the 2026-2027 season. Last month, DAZN announced deals with several other NBA teams, filling the gap that regional sports networks left behind after closing up shop. A deal with San Antonio was strongly suggested but was not official until now.

In a deal similar to that of the Indiana Pacers, DAZN will be the exclusive provider of all Spurs games not exclusive to national television. The games will be streamed on the DAZN app, which is available on a multitude of devices and will offer simultaneous multi-device streaming.

In addition to the games, the app will offer pre- and post-game shows, highlights, behind-the-scenes insights, and original programming.

The Spurs will oversee and manage the production of the games, Spurs Sports & Entertainment tells Pounding the Rock.

As far as availability, the app will serve those in South, Central, and West Texas. Once signed up, they will be able to use the app and stream games while traveling. For those fans residing out-of-market, NBA League Pass will still be the provider.

As expected, 22 games will be broadcast over-the-air from a local provider, yet to be announced.

In addition to Spurs games, DAZN will also offer select Spurs Sports & Entertainment content including San Antonio FC matches and Austin Spurs G League games.

The cost

This is all great, but how much will it cost? A Season Pass is available at $119.99/year. Month-to-month starts at $19.99. DAZN will also be offering an “Ultimate Tier” priced at $139.99/year or $24.99/month, which will include incremental benefits, several of which will include a one-time discount code good for 25 percent off at the Spurs Fan Shop, access to alternate feeds and camera angles, and multi-view capabilities.

As far as discounts go, a free seven-day trial will be available; season ticket holders will be given 20 percent off the Season Pass price, and fans who become “Official Spurs Fan Club members” by September 9 are eligible for an exclusive subscription discount, yet to be disclosed. Additional discounts and promotions will be offered throughout the season.

The service will be available within the coming weeks. Fans can sign up here to receive updates directly from DAZN.
