Despite the defeat against a prepubescent prodigy, the second annual Hoops Gambit was an unabashed triumph for Wembanyama.
The festival took place Saturday at Pierre Curvat Gymnasium in Wembanyama’s hometown of Le Chesnay, just outside of Paris, before moving Sunday to the Paul-Vaillant-Couturier Gymnasium in Nanterre, home of Wembanyama’s first French professional team.
The events featured nearly 300 basketball teams competing in youth and adult 3-on-3 tournaments, as well as men’s and women’s 1-on-1 competitions.
Both stops included Hoop Gambit chess tournaments, organized by Ligue Île-de-France des Échecs.
The 22-year-old Wembanyama, who owns a solid 1,000 ELO rating on chess.com, has often spoken about his affinity for chess, a game he loves almost as much as basketball.
“It’s something that makes the brain work a little bit,” Wembanyama said. “You have to adapt strategy and think about multiple actions and think two or three moves in the future.”

Wembanyama was not the only Spurs player to make an appearance at Hoop Gambit. In a show of solidarity, teammate Harrison Barnes was there to cheer on the event’s tallest chess player.
For Wembanyama, it was all part of an eventful offseason that has included a stroll down the runway at Louis Vuitoon Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, an appearance at the Fanatics Fest in New York and the much ballyhooed signing of a five-year, $252-million contract extension with the Spurs.
In between, Wembanyama found time to work out with a smattering of Spurs teammates in Paris – including newly signed free agent forward Tobias Harris – as well as a few tutorial sessions with NBA Hall of Fame big man Hakeem Olajuwon in Houston.
Hoop Gambit remains one of the favorite events on Wembanyama’s crowded offseason calendar.
