An ankle injury that ended David Jones Garcia’s promising rookie season didn’t stop the Spurs from going forward with their plan to develop the affable guard from the Dominican Republic.
The Spurs announced Wednesday the re-signing of Jones Garcia, 24, to a two-way contract that means he will again split time between Austin and San Antonio.
Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
Labeled a “dynamic scorer” by Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, Jones Garcia was one of seven players selected to play for the G League team at the Rising Stars mini-tourney at All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, but that showcase appearance didn’t happen after he broke his right ankle in a G League game on Jan. 10.
The Spurs first signed Jones Garcia to a two-way contract in July 2025 after he was named to the NBA All-Summer League First Team for an eye-opening performance in Las Vegas in which he averaged 21.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while shooting 53% from 3-point range.
Jones Garcia rewarded the Spurs show of faith in him by averaging a team-high 26.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals in 32.7 minutes in 16 games with the Austin Spurs.

In 11 appearances with the Spurs, Jones Garcia averaged 2.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 6.2 minutes.
“David’s a great kid,” Johnson said in February. “He’s had quite a few check marks or milestones to kind of continue to graduate into the next thing in our program. And he’s someone that has really embraced trying to improve with a lot of the direction and feedback he’s been given. When you’re in that stage of your journey, a young developing player, it’s really important and it’s been fun to be a part of and to observe at times from my vantage point.”
The Spurs also liked Jones Garcia’s demeanor.
“It’s just his mentality and how connected he is,” Vassell said. “Every single time we see him, he always has a smile on his face and he brings so much positive energy.”
But Jones Garcia’s ability to put the ball in the basket is the asset that prompted the Spurs to give him another two-way deal.
“He’s a dynamic scorer who’s put a lot of energy into trying to grow defensively and playing without the basketball, and (we) hope he gets healthy enough that he can have some (work in the) offseason and still continue to develop before training camp hits,” Johnson said.
The Spurs now have three players on two-way deals: Jones Garcia and second-round rookies Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Maliq Brown.
