You know, Wemby may just rewrite all the rules. Don’t know if this is for sure or not, but wow, Wemby’s just so dang different than all that came before in the NBA. Still amazed how after years and years of the All Star game being a joke, Wemby just decides that he wants it to be competitive and wants to play defense, etc, and then others follow his lead. And if this salary thing is true, not only might that influence how much his teammates do or don’t sign for, but it may start changing how much the top stars are paid in the future. Nobody else would be smart enough, care enough, be ballsy enough, etc. to be the first super duper star to do this, but I can see other stars maybe following his lead in the years to come.

He has clearly shown, in many ways, that he is not afraid or shy to go against the grain; that he does not care much for convention or “status quo”; that he cares about bigger things than just feeding his ego or status; that winning is more important to him than money; and that he has wisdom beyond his years. I had this exact conversation about Wemby with some friends in France more than two years ago.

I understand that, from an American perspective, the idea of not taking the maximum contract can sound crazy. But from the very beginning of his career, Wemby has always said that money was not his main priority. His goal is to win championships.

Honestly, when you are already that wealthy, what does earning $40 million instead of $50 million really change? Yes, it is still $10 million but then what? His deals with Nike and Louis Vuitton will probably make him far more money anyway.

What matters most to him is winning an NBA championship and hopefully winning several of them. Taking less money could allow him to lead by example and send a powerful message to his teammates, the Spurs organization, and the fans.

We will have to see whether he actually does it, but here in France, many of us believe he fully understands what is at stake, even though this will still be the first huge contract of his career.
