LAS VEGAS — If Thursday’s matchup between the Spurs’ Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Atlanta’s Kingston Flemings is anything like the last time they met in Las Vegas, fans attending the 2026 NBA Summer League opener are in for a treat.
The guards put on a show when they squared off last November in the Players Era Championship at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Gillespie scored 22 points and made all six of his free throws in the final 35 seconds to propel No. 17 Tennessee to a 76-73 victory over third-ranked Houston in a battle of 6-0 teams.
Flemings, a former San Antonio high school star who led Brennan to the state semifinals, finished with 25 points.
Now they are set to face each other again in Sin City. This meeting will be at the Thomas & Mack Center, where Gillespie will suit up as a second-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and Flemings as the eighth overall selection.
Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The Spurs’ Carter Bryant, the 14th overall pick of the 2025 draft and a veteran of the Spurs’ thrilling run to the 2026 NBA Finals, is expected to make his 2026 summer league debut, but Flemings will be the marquee attraction.
And Gillespie stands ready to beat him again in Vegas.
“I love to play against a good opponent,” Gillespie said. “Just to challenge myself and match up with him, it’s definitely exciting. I’m ready.”
In that November clash, Gillespie and the Cougars overcame an outstanding performance by Flemings that had pro scouts salivating. In 32 minutes, he hit 10 of 15 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3-point range to go with four rebounds and three assists.
“I was really impressed with him,” Gillespie said. “The speed and pace he plays with. It’s definitely an exciting matchup. He’s a really good player.”
Flemings, 19, led Houston in scoring (16.1), assists (5.2) and steals (1.5) in guiding Houston to the the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year — the nation’s longest active streak — and 30 wins for an NCAA-record-tying fifth straight season. The 6-foot-3 playmaker also set the Cougars’ freshman scoring record on his way to becoming the first freshman in program history to earn All-America recognition.
Flemings has turned in solid performances so far this summer while playing in the Salt Lake City Summer League after he became the first San Antonio prep star selected in the first round since Atlanta made Warren graduate Taurean Prince the 12th overall pick in 2016. Flemings was also the first San Antonio high school grad selected in the top 10 since Orlando made Cole’s Shaquille O’Neal the first overall pick in 1992.
In Atlanta’s opener last Saturday, Flemings had 14 points, nine assists and four steals in a 103-102 loss to Utah. He finished Monday’s 82-77 victory over Oklahoma City with 12 points, five assists, three blocks, two rebounds and one steal before sitting out Tuesday’s game against Memphis to rest.
Flemings, who has committed just two turnovers in summer play, believes he’ll be a great fit for Atlanta under the direction of coach Quin Snyder.
“The Hawks play fast, and that’s how I like to play,” Flemings said ahead of summer league, per Yahoo.com.
One of Flemings’ goals is to show his coaches he’s a quick study.
“I want to get comfortable offensively, make the right reads, defend well and build chemistry with my teammates,” he said. “Coach has talked to me about taking open threes when they’re there, continuing to get into the paint, which is one of my strengths, and defending. I just want to show I can consistently do those things and continue proving myself.”

San Antonio Spurs general manager Brian Wright greets Spurs rookie Ja’Kobi Gillespie during a news conference at Victory Capital Performance Center in San Antonio, Thursday, June 25, 2026.
As for the 6-1 Gillespie, he arrived in Vegas with some momentum after scoring 19 points on 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc to go with six assists in an 88-84 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night at the California Classic. The strong outing came after he suffered through a combined 7-of-29 shooting performance in his first two outings in San Francisco.
“One thing I noticed was how fast it was,” Gillespie, 22, said. “It’s up and down and up and down.”
The Spurs drafted the Tennessee native after he averaged 18.4 points, 5.4 assists and 2.8 rebounds as a First-Team All-SEC senior last season in helping the Volunteers reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to eventual national champion Michigan 95-62.
But Gillespie’s focus now is on his rematch with Flemings.
“It was a super close game, also in Vegas,” Gillespie said of their first meeting. “It will be really cool to play against him and have that matchup again.”
